Harry Potter is the magical story of the titular boy who lived and his life as the world’s most famous young wizard. At age 11, his new giant friend Rubeus Hagrid welcomed Harry into Britain’s world of wizards and magic, and Harry was eager to dive deeper into his heritage as a magic-user. But Harry has more than magical power on his side.

Harry Potter is a compelling and likable literary and cinematic hero because he has an outstanding personality, and he has said, done, and even thought all kinds of things to increase his likability over time. Harry understands that having a noble heart and a kind personality is the real magic, and that made him better than ever.

10 Harry Is Humble Despite His Fame

Harry became an overnight celebrity when he, as an infant, survived an assault by Lord Voldemort himself. Just hours after Voldemort’s fall, Professor Minerva McGonagall commented on this, speculating that there might soon be an official Harry Potter Day to mark the occasion. But even if that happened, Harry wouldn’t be too thrilled.

Harry is notably humble as a person, both before and after learning that the entire wizarding world sees him as a hero. It never really got to his head aside from a few harmless, snide comments, and that makes Harry more likable. He actually finds fame uncomfortable and inconvenient.

9 Harry Made Up With Dudley

Harry’s bullying cousin Dudley Dursley tormented him for many years as they grew up as foster brothers, but by the events of Deathly Hallows, both boys had grown up. Dudley finally recognized how horrible he had been, partly due to his exposure to two Dementors, and he made timid efforts to become Harry’s friend instead.

Dudley offered a handshake to Harry when they parted ways late in the summer of 1997, and Harry graciously accepted. That act alone didn’t make up for everything Dudley had done, but both characters boosted their likability by setting aside their past differences. They had much more pressing concerns.

8 Harry Saw The Weasleys As His New Family

The Dursleys reluctantly accepted Harry as their foster son, but in Harry’s eyes, his new family is actually the Weasleys, a group of kindhearted purebloods who live modestly but comfortably. Harry and the Weasleys crossed paths early on, and ever since, Harry saw them as his unofficial foster family.

That showed the true depth of Harry’s gratitude and affection as a character, seeing Molly Weasley as his new mother and Ron and the others as the cool brothers he always wanted. Harry felt like he owed them a lot, and he felt terribly guilty when he contributed to Arthur Weasley getting into trouble at work for that flying Ford Anglia, too.

7 Harry Excelled At Defense Against The Dark Arts

Harry studied many subjects at Hogwarts, but his best subject was the one most relevant to him, that being defense against the dark arts. Harry nearly died because of the dark arts, so symbolically, he became one of the best defense against the dark arts students of all, impressing Professor Remus Lupin in particular.

Harry was really cool anytime he excelled in this field, such as mastering the Patronus Charm and figuring out creative ways to fight off Dark wizards or nasty creatures of all kinds. He even scored an O in his O.W.L. in this field, which is what he needed to become an Auror later on.

6 Harry Became A Star Quidditch Player

Hogwarts offers a few extracurricular activities, most of all the magical ball-based sport Quidditch. Each of the four Houses has its own team, and Harry defied the odds when, in his first year, he became Gryffindor House’s star Seeker. No one expected that, not even Ron, who thought highly of Harry.

Harry dominated the Quidditch field and impressed Harry Potter viewers/readers with his heroic antics on his broom, scoring one victory after another against the other three Houses. Harry’s fingers are practically magnetized to the little golden Snitch.

5 Harry Potter Is Tolerant Of Others

Prejudice, racism, and intolerance are an unfortunate reality in the magical world, from house-elves internalizing their servant status to prejudice against werewolves and, in extreme cases, discrimination against Muggle-born wizards and Muggles themselves. But Harry never felt that way at all.

Harry improved his likability with his open-minded attitude, and he never once looked down on someone else for what they are, such as house-elves or Muggle-borns. In fact, Harry was often shocked that certain species or groups suffered constant discrimination at all. He knows what it’s like to be mistreated for the wrong reasons, after all. So, he saw Dobby the house-elf as an equal and not a minion to be bossed around.

4 Harry Led Dumbledore’s Army

In Order of the Phoenix, Lord Voldemort was back in action, but the Ministry of Magic refused to believe it or do anything about this threat. So, it fell to Harry and his friends/classmates to stand up to evil themselves, and Harry was instrumental in forming the Dumbledore’s Army group.

This student-only organization was dedicated to practicing self-defense against Dark wizards, mainly the fearsome Death Eaters, and it paid off. After Harry trained his classmates, they were ready to face the Death Eaters in the Department of Mysteries and survive, though they eventually needed help from the Order itself.

3 Harry Is Generous & Repays Favors

Some wizards are notably greedy or selfish, such as the fame-seeking con man Gilderoy Lockhart or some sleazy merchants in Knockturn Alley, but Harry is different. Time and again, Harry proved how selfless and generous he can be, and that makes him even easier to like. He covets practically nothing.

Harry received a massive cash prize for winning the Triwizard Tournament, only to give it to Fred and George Weasley as seed money for the joke shop they wanted to open in Daigon Alley. Harry even said that he’d just throw the money away if the twins didn’t accept it. Another time, Harry claimed the Triwizard trophy alongside Cedric, believing they had both earned it.

2 Harry Embodies Gryffindor’s Best Traits

Gryffindor House is represented by a lion for good reasons. This House is all about courage, taking the initiative, working in a small team and the bonds of loyalty among friends, which are all attractive traits in any adventure hero like Harry Potter himself. That’s why he was worthy to wield Gryffindor’s sword.

Harry courageously took on his many foes in these movies/books, from going after the Philosopher’s Stone to venturing into the Chamber of Secrets to rescue Ginny Weasley to infiltrating the Ministry of Magic to rescue Sirius Black, even though that was actually a trap. Harry is a fine Gryffindor.

1 Harry Is Rather Witty At Times

It’s true that sometimes, Harry can be shockingly mean or cold to the people around him or blurt out an insult by accident, but for the most part, he puts his sharp wits to good use. He may not be quite as clever as the typical Ravenclaw student, but then again, Harry isn’t afraid to dish out some snappy comebacks when people annoy him.

It’s nice to see that Harry isn’t a total doormat, and he’s surprisingly good at deflating tension with goofy remarks or dry humor. He even noted that he and the Death Eaters would be friends if only the Death Eaters didn’t keep “trying to do [him] in.” Hermione, who had been tense and upset at the time, was instantly cheered up.
