HBO’s new movie, 8-Bit Christmas, has arrived just in time for fans of the holidays to get into the seasonal spirit. The film follows Jake (Neil Patrick Harris), telling his daughter, Annie, about the story behind his beloved 8-Bit Nintendo console. In this story, audiences are transported back to Christmastime in the late 1980s when Jake and his friends did everything they could to get ahold of the video game console they all want desperately.

This film captures the essence of the holidays, as it has sweet family moments, playground battles, snowy outdoor scenes, as well as some great 80s nostalgia. While it is certainly a special film, there are many others that embody these charming elements that holiday movie lovers might enjoy.

10 A Christmas Story (1983) Available On HBO Max

While everyone has most likely seen this film, it’s still important to keep it on this list because it’s one of the most rewatchable holiday movies out there. A Christmas Story follows Ralphie, a kid who is very similar to Jake because he is willing to do anything to get want he wants for Christmas. The story follows his misadventures during the holidays as he deals with a school bully and his family that doesn’t seem to understand his need for a Red Rider air rifle.

This movie has a similarly nostalgic tone to 8-Bit Christmas and the main character is also a sweet kid that audiences can’t help but love. Although there’s no reference to technology in this film, A Christmas Story still has some of the most iconic quotes in all Christmas movies.

9 Unaccompanied Minors (2006) Available On Netflix

Unaccompanied Minors is an underrated holiday movie that features tons of ridiculous moments in the snow and many slapstick scenes with the kids bugging the staff at the airport. Even though this is not one of the newest holiday movies of 2021, this film is delightfully similar to 8-Bit Christmas in reference to the kids’ relationships with one another.

Jake’s friend group is full of misfits that stick with one another even when their quest to get the Nintendo gets tough. These goofy kids, though they may not be looking for a video game system, all come together to embrace the Christmas spirit in the same kind of way. While not everything makes sense in this movie, it’s sure to please kids and even parents might get a kick out of some of the comedic beats.

8 The Christmas Chronicles (2018) Available On Netflix

The Christmas Chronicles is a silly comedy movie that follows siblings Kate and Teddy Pierce on their quest to capture Santa Claus. The concept is a little far-fetched, but the story is original in its interpretation of Santa Claus.

Fans of 8-Bit’s confident Tammy Hodges will find Kate eerily similar to Tammy in her drive to find Santa and prove he’s real. The kids are relatable characters and the overall resolution is pretty satisfying. Not to mention, there is The Christmas Chronicles 2, which has some big differences, but remains just as good as the original.

7 The Knight Before Christmas (2019) Available On Netflix

The Knight Before Christmas is a holiday romantic comedy, but it’s the kids that really make the film great. It follows a knight, Sir Cole, who is transported into the present day to prove he has a true heart. At its core, the story is about staying honest and being charitable.

There are many silly moments in this movie, most of which have to do with Sir Cole’s inability to assimilate into 21st-century life, but what really makes it a great watch for fans of 8-Bit is its hopping between time periods and the kindness of Brooke’s niece, Claire, who gives her gloves to another girl in need which echoes the kindness of Jake who still helps his dad get his sister a Cabbage Patch doll even after she ruined his chances of receiving a Nintendo. Not to mention, the sweetness of the kids in this film will remind fans of Teddy Hodges and Evan Olsen, both of which are adorable to watch in 8-Bit.

6 Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020) Available On Netflix

This Netflix movie has a diverse main cast of great actors, including Forest Whitaker and Keegan-Michael Key. It follows the granddaughter of a great toymaker as she discovers some of his greatest inventions and attempts to revive his drive to create.

Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey has an original plot and is really well made. While it’s not always realistic, the world that this film builds is immersive and full of Christmas fun. There are some great moments that deal with technology in this movie, which is sure to appeal to fans of 8-Bit Christmas who love seeing a film that emphasizes the importance of inventions, like a revolutionary gaming system, that bring kids joy during the holidays.

5 A Dennis The Menace Christmas (2007) Available On HBO Max

A Dennis The Menace Christmas sees the classic ’90s character trying to get his older curmudgeonly neighbor into the holiday spirit. This movie came out 10 years after the original Dennis The Menace movie and it’s similar in tone to 8-Bit Christmas’s nostalgia-heavy comedy because it’s about a beloved character from the past in a new setting around the holidays. Dennis is a lot like Jake in that he can’t seem to please the adults in his life and there are cheerful moments abound in this Christmas comedy, too.

4 Santa Hunters (2014) Available On Paramount+

This film is about a kid named Alex who receives Santa’s pipe from his uncle for Christmas. Because no one believes it’s really Santa’s because Santa isn’t real, he goes in search of evidence of the mythical holiday hero. Similarly to 8-Bit, each one of these kids has a separate set of skills to aid them on their hunt, and Zoey, just like Tammy, is the real brains of the operation. Not to mention, these kids are even more obsessed with technology than those in 8-Bit, as they use spy cams, computers and all kinds of devices to track down Santa.

3 The Christmas Project (2016) Available On Hoopla

The Christmas Project is about four brothers who team up during the holidays to get back at their middle school bullies. While Josh Jagorski was a scary kid for Jake to deal with in 8-Bit, this Christmastime story takes this theme and builds on it even more and how it affects kids.

Although it is definitely a lower budget picture, this adds to the realness of the film and it makes it an experience that not all moviegoers get to see because it isn’t overproduced or extremely staged like many recent holiday releases. That being said, the bond between the boys is what makes this movie so heartwarming.

2 Klaus (2019) Available On Netflix

Klaus is the only animated movie on this list, but it is sure to please both parents and kids, as it follows a mailman who is trying to bring a community back together again with the help of a sometimes frightening toymaker and the kids in town.

This film is not only award-winning, but it is truly a moving story about how gift-giving can bring people together. Both this movie and 8-Bit feature kids that work tremendously hard for their Christmas gifts. The kids in 8-Bit try tirelessly to get a Nintendo console and, in this movie, the kids of two warring groups in the town let go of their differences to learn how to write letters so that they can receive the gifts they want. The film adds a new perspective on the Santa Claus myth and emphasizes the importance of child-like wonder during the holidays.

1 Jingle All The Way (1996) Available On Disney+

Jingle All The Way follows Howard Langston, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, as he desperately searches for the toy his son wants the day before Christmas. This story is about a man learning the true meaning of Christmas and coming closer to his family, which is a great message. Not to mention, just like in 8-Bit Christmas when the cat is crushed by the TV, Jingle All The Way uses slapstick comedy to shock and satisfy the audience’s desire for something just a tad bit over the top.
