Hank Moody, the protagonist of Showtime’s Californication, is notorious for doing the wrong thing. Most of those wrong things involve alcohol, drugs, or women (often a combination of the three). The troubled writer is played to perfection by David Duchovny, who is set to star in a reboot of The Craft.

Deep down, Hank has plenty of love for Karen, his on-and-off girlfriend (and mother of his child) and Becca, his beloved daughter. But on the surface, he’s a narcissistic womanizer who just can’t help but burn every bridge he gets. Even if he doesn’t do it on purpose. Here are some of his rock-bottom, worst moments throughout the show.

10 SLEEPING WITH MIA

In the pilot episode, Hank meets an attractive fan while checking out his own book in a bookstore. She flirts with him, and the two hook up. Afterward, he finds out that she is actually the 16-year-old daughter of Karen’s fiance. Of course, she never mentions her age until it’s too late.

This bad decision forms the major story arc for most of the first few seasons and comes back to haunt him throughout the rest of the show, derailing his life even more than usual. Later on, she steals his manuscript and publishes his book under her own name, blackmails him, and eventually, he’s charged for statutory rape. Not to mention the turmoil this causes in his relationships with Becca and Karen.

9 CONTINUING TO SLEEP WITH KALI BEHIND SAMURAI APOCALYPSE’S BACK

During season five, Hank meets a cute woman on a plane, named Kali, and they share a makeout session. He later realizes that she the love interest of Samurai Apocalypse, a rapper who wants to work with him. Samurai is protective of Kali and forbids anyone else from touching her.

Despite knowing that Samurai carries a gun, and is willing to set up a beatdown on anyone, Hank still sleeps with Kali behind his back. Thus, he puts his own life at risk for his own sexual needs.

8 ASSAULTING TWO PEOPLE IN ONE NIGHT, ONE BEING A COP

Hank’s solution to his conflicts is often to punch people. That’s how he ends up assaulting Mia’s manager after he is informed they are going public with Mia and Hank’s real story.

But when the person you punch is a cop, whom he assaults the same night, that’s a recipe for disaster. Hank learns this the hard way when he ends up in jail for doing just that. He serves 72 hours in jail for the assault. His assault charges are dropped when an even bigger situation arises – thanks to the Mia story going public, he’s about to stand trial for statutory rape.

7 BRINGING DRUGS TO REHAB

When Atticus Fetch goes to rehab at the end of season six and gives up on his rock star dreams, Hank is out of a job. The solution to this problem is to get Atticus back on drugs.

Hank, with the help of Faith, Becca, and Bates, brings a ton of cocaine into a rehab facility filled with recovering addicts. Naturally, this is not a good idea. As a result, everyone flies into chaos and essentially all of their recovery progress is lost. Atticus Fetch immediately returns to drug use and decides to go back to his old ways.

6 SLEEPING WITH EVERY WOMAN AT THE UNIVERSITY

Hank’s inability to keep his hands to himself comes at a price when he starts teaching a writing class at the university in season three. He begins multiple affairs with literally every woman in close contact.

One of those women is the dean’s wife and Becca’s best friend’s mom, which breaks up their marriage and ruins Becca’s friendship. Another of those women is one of Hank’s students, which is a big no-no. The other woman is his teaching assistant, Jill, who he strings along for a little while among these other affairs.

5 PUNCHING BECCA’S BOYFRIEND AND GETTING HIM BEATEN UP

When Hank catches Becca’s boyfriend, Tyler, cheating on her while out at a club with Samurai Apocalypse, things get messy. Hank tells Samurai about it, and he sends his gang to go and rough him up badly. After that, Hank has another physical confrontation with Tyler at Charlie’s house.

Sure, Tyler deserved it, but at this point, Hank already knows he’s messed up in Becca’s eyes. The best option would have been to just talk to Becca about it. If anything, he could try to talk to Karen if he’s trying not to hurt Becca so the two could make a better game plan. Although, as we know, game plans aren’t really Hank’s thing.

4 STEALING FROM A BOOKSTORE

On a drunken night out in season three, Hank and Charlie decide to steal Hank’s book from a local bookstore. In doing so, they risk being arrested for stealing. Nothing bad really directly happens from this, but it’s still a terrible thing to do when you’re a writer who relies on sales from bookstores.

That’s like bad karma waiting to happen. The fact that they end up in the middle of a convenience store robbery a few minutes later may be an example of that karma in action.

3 SLEEPING WITH BOTH SASHA AND HER MOM

The fact that Hank even sleeps with Sasha Bingham, who is playing Mia in a movie in season four, is weird. But the fact that he then sleeps with her mom is even weirder. Granted, Hank doesn’t know that Sasha and her mom are related until he has already slept with both of them, but it still doesn’t make this situation any better. Ultimately, both women are simultaneously disgusted and angry.

2 LETTING KAREN BELIEVE HE OVERDOSED ON PURPOSE

The first time Hank lands in the hospital, it’s because he accidentally takes too many pills when he’s been drinking. Karen is by his side at the hospital because she’s worried he has attempted suicide. Hank has many chances to tell her the truth. But he sees the attention Karen is giving him and thinks that there’s a chance they can get back together, so he goes along with it.

1 STEALING A COP CAR

One night, during season five, Hank, Charlie, and Samurai Apocalypse end up driving a cop to the hospital after he suffers a stroke. Instead of returning the vehicle or leaving it where it is, they decide to take it on a joyride.

Samurai poses as a cop to interrogate and assault a man he spots Kali with. Everything about this is completely illegal and could get them all in serious trouble.
