If this is the Golden Age of television, then one of the most interesting characteristics of the era is the reduction in the number of episodes. In the days of cable and network TV, shows would last the best part of the year, with 24 episodes a season being standard. With the advent of streaming, it seems audiences have less patience. Releasing the entire series in one go is definitely a result of this; when a show was week-to-week, the drawn-out plot threads were less notable.

However, the shorter seasons allow for more refined storytelling, with creators now driven by telling a story well rather than making it last as long as possible. In fact, the mini-series is fast becoming a defining part of the era, especially with Netflix delivering higher amounts of short but quality content. Here are fifteen of the best the streaming giant has to offer.

This fall brings news of more live-action choices along with some much-anticipated animated features. Even the big Hollywood players are turning to home-streaming services as going to the cinema the old fashioned way takes a hiatus. The result is that Netflix has had several more successes to boast of in the last six months, and here are a few more fan favorites from the IMDb.

15 Maniac – 7.8 stars

True Detective’s Cary Joji Fukunaga directs every episode of this surreal but fascinating sci-fi drama. In an alternate reality without internet, Jonah Hill and Emma Stone play two misfits who agree to a drug trial for a new medicine that can, supposedly, cure their emotional pain.

Not only is the story well-told, but every inch of the production design and world-building is truly excellent. The nature of the show allows the creators to jump genre almost every episode so they can show off the best of their creativity in all 8 episodes.

14 The Pharmacist – 7.8 stars

The first of what will be many true crime documentaries (the appetite for them seems insatiable), The Pharmacist may have been overshadowed by the phenomenon that was Tiger King, but it is arguably far better.

It focuses on Dan Schneider, a small town Pharmacist who wants justice for the death of his son. Soon he stumbles upon a much bigger story, and his small investigation opens up a nation-wide crisis. At only four episodes, it tells its story of real-life heroism succinctly and fairly.

13 Unorthodox – 8.0 stars

From Anna Winger comes a miniseries based on a true story. Esther Shapiro is a young woman in an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish family. She has never been outside of her New York community, and faced with the life of a traditional wife and mother, she decides to leave and begin again in Berlin.

It’s a fascinating study of the Orthodox culture whilst also being an inspiring story about self-discovery and reinvention, which should never be as much a struggle as it is for Esther.

12 Don’t F*ck With Cats – 8.1 stars

This series already has some notoriety for its inclusion of real footage of animal cruelty and murder, which may be too upsetting for some viewers. The series begins with a group of online activists who find a video of extreme animal cruelty and are determined to find who did it.

It certainly grabs the audience’s attention as the mystery and the thrill of the hunt begins to unravel, however, the story keeps getting darker. It’s an interesting look at how internet culture can be morally ambiguous, despite what motivates the users.

11 Caliphate – 8.2 stars

Released this year, Caliphate is a Swedish drama exploring both the threat of terrorism and the dangers of radicalization. It is female-led, which makes for an interesting change of perspective in other similar dramas.

Beginning with characters who are realistic and sympathetic, the show’s story rapidly develops to pit people against each other and detail how easily people can be groomed and radicalized. A thriller that drives the action through all 8 episodes with a truly tumultuous climax.

10 American Vandal – 8.2 stars

It seems that in trying times viewers gravitate to either horror or comedy. In this case, it’s the latter. American Vandal is a series told in a “mockumentary” style, and given the subject matter, there’s no other way to tell this story. The premise is absurd, and it seems like these jokes have nowhere to go, but the level of gravity given to a glorified prank starts to feel manipulative even as it’s full of laughs. Does this remind anyone else of the determinantal effects of social media and sensationalist news?

9 Wild Wild Country – 8.2 stars

One of the most fascinating and bizarre stories of recent US history. A large cult, grown under the influence of a charismatic Indian guru, buy a huge plot of land in Oregon to build an entire city for its members.

The main structure of the series follows the battle between the cult and the local Oregonians, but it does also explore the almost magical influence the cult had on its members, many of whom have admitted to being brainwashed. The series does have a slightly creepy edge as it gets deeper and deeper into what happened in that desert.

8 Godless – 8.3 stars

In an interesting twist on the Western genre, Godless focuses on a town mysteriously run by women in 1880. They must defend it from the arrival of Frank Griffin, a violent outlaw who’s come for revenge.

Entirely written and directed by Logan screenwriter Scott Frank, the series has a very tight single vision that is well delivered. With an ensemble cast who all give outstanding performances, this Western series is a tight and thrilling story, too easy to watch in one sitting!

7 Julie and the Phantoms – 8.3 stars

There’s always an odd one out in a band, and in this case, it’s Julie, the lead, because she’s alive. If you watched those vintage movies like The Shaggy Dog and Bedknobs and Broomsticks this is a similar genre with more of the modern tween glamour. The protagonist discovers her three ghostly friends when she figures out how to play an old record, releasing them like pop-culture genies from their vinyl prison.

6 Unbelievable – 8.4 stars

Rightly showered in Emmys, this crime drama is full of excellent writing and incredible performances. It is a story that is deeply upsetting and quite scary, made all the more infuriating that it’s based on a true story. Kaitlyn Dever plays Marie Adler, a young woman who was brutally attacked and then accused of lying by the police.

The series jumps between Marie in the aftermath and two female detectives conducting a separate investigation. Despite the upsetting subject matter, the show moves at the pace of a thriller making it near essential viewing.

5 The Punisher – 8.5 stars

Looking for some Marvel that’s more on the dark and gritty side? The Punisher has gone through the adaptation treatment a few times, but the framework of a TV series as opposed to a film is a novel concept. The storyline remains basically the same, with civilian Frank Castle turned hardened vigilante in pursuit of revenge. His descent into the criminal underworld to find his family’s killers easily filled two seasons.

4 Cobra Kai – 8.7 stars

The Karate Kid was a cultural phenomenon back in the 1980s. Imagine the memes “wax on, wax off” would have generated today. More than 30 years later, there’s a lot more drama about love triangles and family loyalty. The spirit of the movie lives on in this series, which finds Johnny at an awkward mid-life crossroads and Daniel mourning the loss of Mr. Miyagi. In real life, Pat Morita passed away in 2005.

3 When They See Us – 8.9 stars

Ava DuVernay is a filmmaker at the top of her game. Her decision to make a TV show clearly demonstrates the passion and importance she holds for this story. The Central Park Five were five African American teens who were wrongly accused of a brutal attack in the 1980s and incarcerated despite the lack of evidence.

The series is driven by the emotion of both the creators and the performers, the sense of injustice is palpable in every episode. An important and timely series and an excellent example of the power of storytelling.

2 The Last Dance – 9.2 stars

The story of Michael Jordan and the legendary 1990s Chicago Bulls could inspire anyone. This docuseries is amazingly addictive and it’s very well told. Rather than progressing linearly, the series constantly jumps back and forth from the Bulls’ final season to how they got there.

It’s a brilliant way of explaining why this team mattered so much, while also rapidly raising the stakes with each episode. The collected footage displays not just a key part of sporting history, but a pivotal aspect of 1990s popular culture, making this a sports show for everyone.

1 The Haunting of Bly Manor – 9.3 stars

There are all kinds of tragedies here, starting with why these creepy kids need someone to look after them in the first place. They’ve been orphaned and are now in the care of their uncle, and the previous governess died a mysterious death. The Haunting of Bly Manor starts out scary and never quits, so don’t worry about sitting through an overly long exposition before the thrills begin.
