Though the topic of sea monsters has given the world a seemingly endless amount of schlock, there have been quite a few noble cinematic riffs on the formula, mostly in the horror genre, but not always. 15 An Underwater Mining Facility Falls Under Attack From A Mutant Creature In Leviathan

RoboCop’s Peter Weller starred in 1989’s Leviathan as a geologist overseeing a mining operation that discovers a scuttled soviet sub at the bottom of the sea, where they discover a safe containing information about the ship’s crew as well as a deadly infection.

That infection begins to kill and mutate the staff of the mining facility, using their bodies to transform into a horrifying giant aquatic monster that became known as homo aquaticus as it earned a spot in cinematic history.

14 Deep Rising Features A Giant Sea Monster That Attacks A Luxury Gambling Cruise Ship

1998’s Deep Rising followed a team of jewel thieves as they attempted to infiltrate a luxury gambling cruise ship only to discover it had already been attacked by strange tentacle-like monsters that begin devouring the survivors.

As they make their way through the ship on the hunt for their big score while attempting to survive the monster, they learn that the tentacles are all a part of the giant Octalus, which was nesting in the ship as it fed on the crew and gamblers after first attacking and disabling the ship.

13 The Giant Monster That Attacked New York In Cloverfield Was Awakened By Deep-Sea Drilling

While the found-footage horror Cloverfield from 2008 took place on the island of Manhattan as it was attacked by a giant and mysterious monster, the affectionately-named “Clover” was revealed to have started its attack after exiting the ocean.

An alternate reality game was launched during the promotion of the film that teased the origins of the monster through the revelation of a deep-sea drilling accident that awakened the monster. The drilling was done by a company known as Tagruato which made the universe combining Slusho drink that appeared in projects from J.J. Abrams.

12 Godzilla Is A Classic Kaiju With Numerous Appearances That Calls The Ocean Home

The titular giant atomic lizard first appeared in 1954’s Godzilla before the legendary kaiju achieved mega-stardom and appeared in over thirty movies over the years that further cemented the sea monster’s cinematic legacy.

While Godzilla has appeared as a villain against humanity, he is often seen as Earth’s protector against other Kaiju that also sometimes include other sea monsters. 2014’s Godzilla kicked off a new MonsterVerse of movies that ultimately pitted sea monster against giant ape in Godzilla vs. Kong to further please fans of the genre.

11 Toxic Chemical Dumping In The Ocean Created A Deadly Monster In The Host

Bong Joon-Ho’s 2006 monster movie The Host explored the consequences of the U.S. Military’s disposal of toxic waste in Seoul’s Han River, which mutates an aquatic lifeform into the monstrous Gwoemul, which was also the original name of the South Korean film.

The Gwoemul attacked the citizens of Seoul and kidnapped a small child after unleashing an infectious disease on the city, which further highlighted the dangers of illegal disposal of toxic waste that has led to the creation of far too many dangerous sea monsters over the years.

10 A Stranded Deep-Sea Research Team Encountered Deadly Monsters In Underwater

After sitting on the shelf for a couple of years before finally being given an early January release date, Underwater, unfortunately, seemed destined to fly under the radar. Though the Kristen Stewart-led thriller has the inescapable feel of being sewn together from elements of sci-fi thrillers past, there are a handful of inspired sequences.

The most unforgettable of those sequences is the Lovecraftian finale that gives viewers one of the most high-budgeted renditions of the iconic Cthulhu. A perfect stay-at-home matinee, Underwater is worth the ride and sadly one of 2020’s first cinematic casualties.

Lake Placid’s success can largely be summed up in two simple words: Betty. White. A blend of comedy and creature-feature, Lake Placid is nowhere near a “great movie.” However, the film is a lot of fun to watch. Bill Pullman, Oliver Platt, and Bridget Fonda lead a team of scientists trying to defeat a giant crocodile who seemingly can’t stop eating cows.

It’s silly and doesn’t altogether work, but Betty White’s supporting turn as a local who quips her way around the film is what makes it an enduring romp that at least tried to do something a little off-kilter.

8 Sea Fever Is An Atmospheric And Claustrophobic Parasite From The Deep Tale

The most recent addition to the list, and the subgenre, is this little Irish indie from debut director Neasa Hardiman. Relying on atmosphere and mounting suspense over special effects and setpieces, Sea Fever is a claustrophobic ‘parasite from the deep’ tale.

After a trepidacious biologist joins the crew of a fishing vessel, the ship’s captain veers them into forbidden territory. What follows is a brilliantly written nightmare with at least two scenes guaranteed to make anyone’s skin crawl. A film that has definite cult-potential, Sea Fever also marks a great showing of potential for its debut writer/director.

7 A Survivor Stranded On A Desert Island Is Hunted By A Sea Monster In Sweetheart

One of Netflix’s better original stabs at the horror genre, 2019’s Sweetheart plays out like a mix of Jaws and Cast Away. After a young woman is stranded on a tropical island, the quest to survive is complicated by the revelation there is a humanoid sea creature living just offshore in an ominous pit on the ocean floor.

From the first scene onwards, Sweetheart maintains a steadily growing tension that culminates in a riveting finale showdown between woman and beast. The film relies heavily on star Kiersey Clemons, and thankfully Clemons is more than up to the task.

6 Tale Of Tales Is An anthology Movie That Featured A Unique Take On The Classic Sea Serpent

A dark fantasy anthology of fairy tales, Tale of Tales begins with a surreal sea monster story that sets the tone for all of the bizarre events to follow. The story dealing with the sea monster is led by Salma Hayek in a performance that is a break from her usual sly seductress.

The mixture of computer-generated and practical effects used in the film to bring the leviathan-like sea monster to life results in an unusually unsettling sequence of imagery. One of the more traditional renditions of the classic sea serpent, Tale of Tales is a singular work.

5 The Lure Is Part Disco Musical, Part Mermaid Horror Film, And Part Modern Fable

“Original” is a word thrown around a lot when it comes to genre films. However, there is no doubt that the Polish oddity The Lure is worthy of the label.
