Netflix is a seemingly infinite source for binge-watching, but it can be difficult to find new gems hidden underneath all the popular titles. This is especially true when it comes to the streaming service’s collection of television series. Narrowing the options even further to comedy still leaves a million potential shows to wade through.

Fans of edgier comedy series won’t be disappointed by Netflix’s offerings – as long as they can dig deep enough to uncover them. From dark, heady shows to absurdist sing-a-longs to reimagined sketch comedies, there’s bound to be something that suits anyone’s sense of humor on Netflix.

There are countless comedy series on Netflix and while some get popular quickly like Dead to Me or some were already popular before they came onto Netflix like The Good Place there’s still funny Netflix shows that are relatively unknown from sketch shows to dark comedies to silly comedies. Here are some of the best comedy shows on Netflix that viewers might not have checked out yet.

15 Kim’s Convenience (2016-2021)

Kim’s Convenience might be more well-known today as people are discovering it with its 5th season coming out, which hopefully won’t be its last, but it’s still relatively unknown compared to other Netflix comedy series and it’s certainly worth the watch.

The series follows the Korean-Canadian Kim family, who own a convenience store, in their misadventures that include a lot of laughs alongside a lot of heartfelt moments. Also, anyone excitedly waiting for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings should definitely check out Kim’s Convenience as Simu Liu stars in the series as Jung Kim.

14 I’m Sorry (2017-2019)

I’m Sorry is a hilarious and pretty unknown comedy series that’s available to stream on Netflix. It has a very similar feeling to Curb Your Enthusiasm so any fan of that series will surely enjoy watching I’m Sorry created by and starring comedian and actor Andrea Savage.

The series follows Andrea in her daily life as a comedy writer who comments on the world around her and often finds herself in odd yet funny situations that she’s typically responsible for bringing about. Her husband Mike (Tom Everett Scott) is more proper and a bit of a foil to her, but the two have great chemistry and a lovely relationship while trying to navigate raising a young daughter.

13 Tuca & Bertie (2019-Present)

Tuca & Bertie was a Netflix original series that reminds some fans of BoJack Horseman but is nowhere near as well-known as BoJack is. The series follows two best friends Tuca (Tiffany Haddish) and Bertie (Ali Wong) who get along despite having completely different personalities.

It’s a fun and inventive series with creative storylines and animation and isn’t afraid to approach series subjects like sexual harassment while still staying one of Netflix’s funniest shows. Netflix dropped the series after one season, but it will be continued on Adult Swim.

12 Crashing (2016)

Before Fleabag there was Crashing written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge and available to stream on Netflix. There are only a few episodes of this series so it’s a quick watch and definitely worth it for the laughs.

The Netflix comedy series follows a group of young adult strangers who live together because they can’t afford to rent on their own. The show follows them adjusting to life after university that requires more responsibility all in the abandoned hospital they live in.

11 Great News (2017-2018)

Great News is a relatively unknown series yet it was executive produced by the well-known Tina Fey and has a similar comedic approach to 30 Rock. The comedy follows the employees of a cable news network that has a lot of strong personalities from the characters like the co-anchors the retro newsman Chuck (John Michael Higgins) and the younger hip Portia (Nicole Richie).

But the series mostly centers on Katherine (Briga Heelan) who is hired onto the news team only to find that her mother (Andrea Martin) has successfully gotten an internship at the company so she can hang out with her daughter all day every day.

10 Toast Of London (2012 – 2015)

Fans of bizarre, off-kilter British comedy are likely already familiar with Matt Berry, the star and co-creator of Toast of London. Berry plays a self-absorbed actor in London named Steven Toast who is in complete denial over his failing career.

Toast floats from one small gig to the next, getting in plenty of trouble along the way. Each episode of this weirdly whimsical sitcom also includes a musical performance from Berry.

9 Bonding (2019 – Present)

For those who aren’t put off by BDSM and love dark comedy, Bonding is a must-watch series. It tells the story of two 20-somethings who make ends meet in NYC by working as dominatrices.

Zoe Levin and Brendan Scannell star in Bonding, which is genuinely funny while also shining a sympathetic light on its taboo subject matter. The second season premieres in January 2021.

8 W1A (2014 – 2017)

W1A is a meta mockumentary about the lives of media employees at the BBC, also known as the British Broadcasting Company. Narrated by David Tennant, the show focuses on Hugh Bonneville’s character Ian Fletcher, who is hired as the BBC’s fictional new Head of Values.

Fletcher’s job is far from easy, and he’s exposed to the dysfunctional nature of the BBC from day one. All three seasons of W1A are streaming on Netflix.

7 Lunatics (2019)

Chris Lilley is a controversial, but intriguing, Australian comedian known for developing mockumentary-style series wherein he plays multiple characters whose narratives overlap. Lunatics is Lilley’s latest venture; Lilley plays six people of all ages and backgrounds who possess eccentric beliefs or behaviors.

At its best, Lunatics provides sincere glimpses into the lives of Lilley’s various personages. At its worst, it employs problematic characterizations that don’t hold up to valid criticism.

6 She’s Gotta Have It (2017 – 2019)

Spike Lee worked with Netflix to adapt his debut film into a series. She’s Gotta Have It, which aired for two seasons, breathes new life into the world of rom-coms, as it follows a female protagonist who is dating three men.

DeWanda Wise plays Nola Darling, a Brooklynite who refuses to remain with just one of her suitors because she enjoys all of them. The series emphasizes Nola’s sexual freedom instead of her sense of obligation to commit to one man.

5 Norsemen (2017 – 2020)

A Norse comedy that translates well with English-speaking audiences, Norsemen follows a group of medieval Vikings who reside in the village of Norheim. The series finds humor in the mandate as it explores the day-to-day lives of its characters.

Tensions escalate as Norheim is threatened by neighboring villages and invaders. Described as “Monty Python meets Game of Thrones,” Norsemen lasted three seasons before its unique blend of action and comedy came to an end.

4 Flowers (2016 – 2018)

Flowers is a very dark comedy that tackles mental health issues with grace, humor, and creativity. Julian Barratt and Olivia Colman play depressed children’s author Maurice and his cheery wife Deborah, respectively, who live in a remote part of England with their two adult children.

With its surrealistic cinematography style, hilarious dialogue, and superb acting, Flowers is an intimate character study that far exceeds the expectations of its genre. Flowers was developed by Will Sharpe, who co-stars as Maurice’s Japanese illustrator Shun.

3 I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson (2019 – Present)

Detroit native Tim Robinson revels in the awkward and absurd with his sketch series I Think You Should Leave. Employing satire, situational comedy, and body humor, Robinson’s series explores circumstances unique to life in contemporary America.

The show includes cameos from the likes of Steven Yeun, Andy Samberg, Tim Heidecker, and Fred Willard – as well as Robinson’s usual sidekick and fellow Detroiter Sam Richardson. A second season of I Think You Should Leave is currently in the works.

2 People Just Do Nothing (2014 – 2018)

Another brilliant British mockumentary series, People Just Do Nothing revolves around a group of ambitious slackers who run an illegal pirate radio station out of their West London suburb. Kurupt FM dispatches the latest UK garage/drum and bass sounds generated by MC Grindah and his sidekick DJ Beats.

When they aren’t broadcasting, Grindah and Beats roam around their Brentford acting much tougher and younger than they really are. All five seasons of People Just Do Nothing are witty, wonderfully paced, and convincing.

1 Crazyhead (2016)

Part odd-couple comedy, part supernatural thriller, Crazyhead isn’t restricted by any genre limitations or requirements. This fresh, funny series from England stars Cara Theobold as Amy, a bowling alley worker with a special gift: she can see demons.

Susan Wokoma co-stars as Raquel, another seer who joins forces with Amy to save the world from evil forces. Despite its stellar acting, Crazyhead only lasted one season.
