15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

Icons of horror like Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees are known for their outrageously high kill counts, but how many victims have they actually claimed in a single movie.

Given that the average horror flick is around an hour and a half long, there’s usually a limit as to how many kills can actually be committed. Most movies—even some of the most gratuitous slashers—take a less-is-more approach, with few films including more than around twenty kills. These 10 movies, however, take things to an entirely different level.

Updated on October 28th, 2021 by Tanner Fox: With iconic killers like Michael Myers and Ghostface recently let loose once again, it’s time to re-tally the kill counts garnered by fan-favorite horror hedonists. Unfortunately, while some well-known slasher villains have long since ripped their way into the triple digits, it’s taken most of them multiple sequels, remakes, and reboots to do so.

Some films, on the other hand, see bodies pile up by the dozens before the credits roll. From killer clowns to superpowered persons gone bad, it doesn’t get much gorier than this.

15 Halloween Kills (2021) 30+

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

A sputtering sequel that doesn’t do all that much to advance the story of 2018’s Halloween retread, Halloween Kills may be a bit light on plot development, but it certainly isn’t light on kills.

Across the three separate Halloween timelines fans have thus far been treated to, Myers has slain well over one hundred people. Though not all of his kills are shown directly, he’s easily at the top of his game when it comes to killing. Stabbing through a squad of firemen and hacking a group of vigilante townsfolk to death, this is the most menacing Myers has ever been.

14 This Mist (2007) 30+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

Easily the most Lovecraftian short story Stephen King ever penned, this 2007 adaptation focuses partly on horrible gorings and partly on the psychological impact of traumatic events. It was relatively well-received when it first debuted, but, years later, it suffers from an abundance of less-than-convincing CGI.

While it can drag in some places, The Mist doesn’t disappoint when it comes to kills. From bodies being ripped in half to characters being carried off into the mysterious mist, there’s a lot of tense horror to be found here. Boasting around thirty kills and one of the bleakest endings in movie history, The Mist makes for a tough watch.

13 Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988) 40+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

1988’s Killer Klowns From Outer Space never expected horror fans to take it seriously; love-struck teens, hoaky plot threads, and some seriously creepy clowns all culminate in a horror-comedy that’s much more funny than frightening.

There’s not much in the way of gore here, but the movie does boast a surprisingly high body count. In fact, there’s a veritable massacre here, with clowns exploding left and right and side characters being transmogrified into cotton candy. It’s perhaps the silliest slaughter ever committed to film.

12 The Cabin in the Woods (2011) – 56+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods took the oft-used horror trope and ran with it by framing the typical scary cabin scenario with a secretive government-run program that manipulated the events of the film.

The facility under the cabin housed a number of horrifying monsters that began to tear apart the workers, resulting in over 60 onscreen kills. This is even before the finale that potentially kicked off an apocalypse that could have added billions to the total body count. Unfortunately, the credits roll before complete chaos ensues.

11 30 Days Of Night (2007) – 60+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

David Slade’s 30 Days of Night adapted Steve Niles’ and Ben Templesmith’s comic series of the same name that explored the Alaskan town of Barrow as it entered its annual month of darkness while the remaining citizens fell prey to a roving band of ancient vampires.

As the town became overrun with the powerful and sadistic vampires, the body count began to pile up even before the survivors began to fight back. However, over 60 human and vampires body were left throughout the town of Barrow after the horrific slaughter.

10 Us (2019) – 66+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

2019’s Us from writer/director Jordan Peele followed a family as they encountered their dark doppelgängers while on vacation together which forced them to fight for their lives as they investigated the truth behind their doubles.

It was soon revealed that the Wilson family wasn’t the only victim of the red-clothed duplicates, and their bloody reign of terror spread across the country as they took out their copies. The body count grew as both doubles and originals fought to the death with an unknown number of kills implied in the finale.

9 Carrie (1976) – 70+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

Stephen King’s first adapted novel was 1976’s Carrie from director Brian de Palma, and it starred Sissy Spacek as the titular telekinetic teenager whose high school prom went down in history as one of the bloodiest horror fans have ever seen.

While 2002’s TV movie adaptation featured an overwhelming amount of unimpressive kills—234 in total—the original featured a more modest number of unforgettable kills that totaled around 70, including Carrie White herself and her overbearing mother.

8 The Belko Experiment (2016) – 84+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

American employees stuck in a foreign, isolated office building soon discover that they are involved in a dark test of human behavior when the building is locked down and they are instructed to kill each other in order to survive in The Belko Experiment.

Belko Industries employees were each outfitted with an explosive device in their heads that could be detonated remotely which drove the staff into violent confrontations that killed 84 people, though the finale revealed this same experiment running in a hundred different buildings, multiplying that total exponentially.

7 Slither (2006) – 100+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

Guardians of the Galaxy mastermind James Gunn’s alien invasion horror Slither won Fangoria’s Chainsaw Award for Highest Body Count in 2006. While some of the bodies that are counted were off-screen deaths, the on-screen kills still stack up.

Slither may bring in as many laughs as it does scares, but the small group of survivors continually rack up over 50 on-screen kills as they fight off alien-infected townsfolk, with another 50+ falling in the final scene to really put Slither over the top.

6 The Invisible Man (1933) – 105+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

One of the earliest examples of a horror film with an excessive body count was 1933’s The Invisible Man, which iconically introduced Dr. Jack Griffin following his invention of a serum that rendered him completely invisible—though also began to drive him insane.

Griffin set about on a plan of world domination by committing a few random murders in his new state of invisibility, though the film’s kill count was increased dramatically when he caused a massive train derailment that resulted in the death of over a hundred passengers.

5 The Purge: Election Year (2016) 110+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

While the original Purge film was a relatively focused endeavor that mostly featured the exploits of a single family, the second and third installments significantly broadened the scope of the series. The third film, Election Year, really dials things up to eleven, partially relaying the story of a politician who must survive the purge after the ban on exterminating public officials is lifted.

As is the case with many of the movies in the Purge franchise, many of the kills included aren’t given much attention, and many of the victims’ names are never known. Still, the film features far more carnage than even the most brutal slasher.

4 From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) – 120+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

Zombies and vampires share a similar dark resurrection element to their transformation, which gives Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn an advantage as fans got to see quite a few characters killed more than once here, with more to follow in the sequels.

While the original film featured a few early kills from the fugitive Gecko brothers, it’s the massacre at the Mexican bar that they lay low in that kicks off a brutal vampire attack. This moment onwards adds a lot to the film’s final tally, with only a couple of survivors left to walk away into the sunlight.

3 The First Purge (2018) – 130+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

Not to be confused with the original film The Purge, The First Purge is its franchise’s fourth film and a prequel that explores a future U.S. society that has instituted a 12-hour law-free window that allows citizens to “purge” their darker impulses. In reality, the annual purge is a systematic genocide the government uses to control the population.

The prequel explores the first trial run of the Purge that targeted the poor and disenfranchised, kicking off the politically charged films that all featured a heavy kill tally. But, of the four Purge films so far, The First Purge really upped the ante with a number of added security camera kills.

2 Dawn of the Dead (2004) – 140+ Kills

15 Horror Movies With The Most Kills Ranked

George Romero’s iconic Dawn of the Dead from 1978 featured over 100 human and zombie deaths and could easily hold a top spot all on its own. However, the 2004 remake pushed the boundaries on the genre and managed to overtake the original with over 140 kills.

Zack Snyder’s remake featured an outbreak of terrifyingly fast zombies that resulted in a number of quick-paced kills that included a lot of explosions, which makes it difficult to lock down a specific kill count for Dawn of the Dead. Though, in a way, that’s all the more impressive.

1 Brightburn (2019) – 274 Kills

2019’s Brightburn from producer James Gunn re-imagined the classic Superman story of an alien child found on Earth as a baby and raised by humans, though, when young Brandon Breyer’s powers began to manifest, the iconic tale took a dark twist.

Breyer’s encounter with the alien ship that first brought him to Earth begins to transform and manipulate the alien child to become the masked Brightburn, and he begins to use his powerful abilities to take out anyone he feels is a threat to his newfound life. This results in the destruction of a plane to cover up his murders, resulting in the deaths of hundreds.
