The orange network has managed to continuously churn out animated and live action shows that appeal to the masses, whether that’s delightful animated series like SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora The Explorer or live action shows like iCarly, Victorious and Big Time Rush, Nickelodeon has provided legions of fans with fresh content to cherish. And despite all the changes in the world since the network launched in 1977, it has continued to stay a part of the lives of children and teenagers. But in ensuring that the TV shows that air on the network are the best there can be, Nickelodeon has had to cancel shows despite popular demand.

In some cases, it wasn’t just Nickelodeon execs who called off the show but also other factors which lead to a show’s demise. And while Nickelodeon has gone on to replace its canceled shows with more amazing series, one can’t help but look back at some of the most shocking cancellations the network made. 15 Victorious

Nickelodeon’s Victorious is easily one of the biggest hits for the network. The series created by Dan Schneider centers on Tori Vega (an aspiring singer) who begins at The Hollywood Arts High School and tries to fit in and find her talent, while getting into crazy situations with her friends Andre, Robbie, Cat, Beck, Jade and her sister Trina. The show was a hit with fans with its first episode drawing 5.7 million viewers and becoming the second highest premiere of a live action show for the network. The show with its mix of comedy and music, managed to draw strong ratings and gained a heavy fan base. It also handed American actress and singer Ariana Grande her breakout role. After two successful seasons, the show was picked up for another season, but after the season was shot, Nickelodeon surprisingly canceled the show. The third season was instead divided, with the remaining episodes of season three serving as the fourth season. Thus the series ended without a proper finale, a fact that was referenced in the series’ spin-off Sam & Cat.

The show was quite popular among Nickelodeon fans when the first season aired, but it started suffering from bad ratings when the show’s schedule was changed. While the show managed to close out with a proper finale in the form of the TV film The Wedding Frame, fans were still left heartbroken by Nickelodeon’s decision to cancel the show.

The series was a modest hit for the network, but its ratings continued to slip as the first season progressed and half way through the series’ run on the network, creator David M. Israel revealed that the show would not be picked up for a second season. While the ratings for the show weren’t the best, it’s disappointing that the series was not given a follow up season to really find its voice.

12 Supah Ninjas

Supah Ninjas was an action-comedy series that premiered on Nickelodeon from 2011 to 2013. The series, created by Leo Chu and Eric Garcia, revolved around Mike Fukanaga (Big Hero 6’s Ryan Potter) a Japanese-American teen who discovered that he comes from a line of ninjas who are meant to fight against the evil threatening the world. Despite the series winning an award for its writing and an Emmy for its Stunt Coordination, Supah Ninjas wasn’t a big ratings giant for Nick. The show was one of a kind with its use of stunts and action and its subsequent cancellation in 2013 left many fans dismayed. The series end (which had the titular character being kidnapped) left many fans frustrated and wanting to know the fate of their favorite characters. Since it ended the cast has since moved on to better things with Ryan Potter set to play Beast Boy in Titans and Gracie Dzienny cast in the upcoming Bumblebee movie.

11 Zoey 101

Zoey 101 was the most expensive Nickelodeon show made, with the series being shot in Malibu. The series was also the first show for future Victorious lead actress Victoria Justice, who was a main cast member for two seasons. Despite strong ratings, Zoey 101 was canceled after actress Lynn Spears became pregnant at the age of 16. The series finale is one of the highest rated episodes for Nickelodeon.

10 The Troop

With its blend of action, comedy and monsters The Troop was a show with a strong fan base, and it is surprising that Nick went ahead and canceled the comedy series so quickly.

Instead of the network trying to come up with a schedule that would allow the Wolff brothers to pursue their education, Nickelodeon decided to cancel the show in 2009. However the stars of the two Wolff siblings hasn’t dimmed with both being part of big Hollywood films since leaving Nick.

The half-hour teen sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart began in 1991 on Nickelodeon where it lasted for five seasons. The series was based on the life of Clarissa Darling, a teenager who was navigating through life. Clarissa Explains It All is credited as the first live action Nick show to feature a female lead, but it’s also remembered for being a launching pad for Hart. Despite strong ratings, the network decided to cancel the show in 1994 as they felt that Melissa Joan Hart was getting too old to play a teenager. Subsequent sequels to the show were planned at CBS, but they never amounted to anything. Hart on the other hand became a household name by becoming Sabrina The Teenage Witch on ABC.

4 Danny Phantom

The series was a hit for both British and international viewers, with fans and critics praising the acting, writing and mystery. But in 2013 a moderator on Nick USA’s website disclosed that the Nick had decided to cancel the show instead of renewing it for season 4.

2 Wendell and Vinnie

Fans of iCarly will attest that Jerry Trainor is a force to be reckoned with. The actor playing Carly’s older brother Spencer in iCarly became a fan favorite early on, so it would make sense that Nickelodeon fans would want to see more of him after iCarly ended and Nickelodeon’s Wendell & Vinnie was to be just that. The series followed Vinnie Bassett who was left to take care of his intelligent twelve year old nephew Wendell after the death of his parents. While the sitcom didn’t earn positive reviews, fans loved the dynamic between the uncle and nephew. Sadly. the sitcom was canceled while the first season was being aired. Considering the acting chops of Trainor and Buddy Handleson, who played Wendell, it’s a shame that the series didn’t last longer especially since it was a show that could have easily picked up ratings in subsequent seasons.

1 Sam & Cat

Sam & Cat was a spin-off and sequel of iCarly and Victorious that premiered in June 8th, 2013 and lasted for one season despite strong ratings and critical acclaim. Sam & Cat revolved around the characters of Sam Pluckett and Cat Valentine played by Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande. Initially it was stated that the show would be picked up for a second season, but after some racy photos of Jennette McCurdy leaked online, the controversy became big enough for Nick to consider ending the show. Other factors contributing to the show’s cancellation had to do with the onset drama between the two leads as well as the desire of the two actresses to move on to other projects.
