1942 x RepliCade Review Mini Nostalgia With Modern Improvements

Capcom’s classic arcade shooter 1942 holds a special place in video game history. The intense title, which released in 1984 but takes place further back in World War II’s Pacific Theatre, is among the first vertical scrolling shooters of its type. While many modern gamers would find the experience quite similar to something like Galaga, 1942 was responsible for introducing key elements to the stick shooting genre such as powerful boss enemies and special power-ups. While Capcom’s classic title may be a thing of the past, New Wave Toys has brought it back to life as the latest release in its RepliCade line.

With the 1942 x RepliCade, New Wave Toys has accurately recreated an old-school 1942 arcade cabinet in 1/6 scale. Sound effects, graphics and gameplay have been authentically preserved within the 11-inch tall cabinet model, with modern technology even amplifying these aspects despite the machine’s small stature. Like with previous releases such as 2019’s Street Fighter II: Champion Edition RepliCade, New Wave Toys has recaptured the look and feel of mashing buttons on an old arcade cabinet.

While an 11-inch tall arcade cabinet may sound like a novelty, the 1942 x RepliCade is a fully functional gaming platform. The cabinet includes both the original title and its sequel, 1943: The Battle of Midway, with a button next to the replica coin slot being used to alternate between games through a menu. Modern luxuries such as HDMI connectivity and multi-speaker audio help to enhance the original presentation of the fast-flying shooters. The HDMI port allows gamers to play the retro games on a big screen, while the enhanced audio means that the sounds of combat are more immersive than ever before.

Despite originally releasing back in 1984 and 1987, respectively, 1942 and 1943: The Battle of Midway feature gameplay that should be familiar to most gamers. The controls are similar to games like Galaga, with a stick used to control the player’s plane and a single button used to fire straight ahead. The games also include a “loop” button, used to perform evasive maneuvers, which adds a bit of tactical variety to combat. While they basically play the same way, 1943: The Battle of Midway makes some notable improvements over its predecessor. An increased variety of enemy types and power-ups make the game feel a bit more modern than the original arcade shooter style.

Due to its nature as a 1/6 scale replica, 1942 x RepliCade can be a bit cumbersome to control. The joystick fits between two fingers, and the buttons are smaller than a single finger, so a delicate touch is recommended. It can be a bit awkward to fit both hands on the cabinet’s controls, but New Wave Toys anticipated this issue and included a bonus 1943 Mini Arcade Stick. This stick is more similar to a traditional video game controller, allowing players a more comfortable playing experience, and the classic recreation cabinet is even compatible with some modern console controllers such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Using controllers can enable two-player gameplay as well, with one player using the cabinet’s miniature controls or both using controllers. However, playing with two people would be best accomplished while using an HDMI connection to a larger screen than the cabinet’s small display.

The design of the 1942 x RepliCade’s 1/6 scale is spot-on, making fans of any classic arcade game feel nostalgic for some old-school gaming. Modern resolution and audio make vertical shooter more intense and immersive than ever, with the HDMI connection and extra controller being unnecessary but extremely welcome additions. Unfortunately the controls on the cabinet itself are very small, making for a cumbersome playing experience without a controller. For those interested in classic arcade titles, or video game history in general, the 1942 x RepliCade is an awesome way to reclaim that retro arcade experience.
