2021 MacBook Pro Should You Buy 14Inch Or 16Inch

The MacBook Pro lineup has been updated with a next-generation M-series chip, a ton of ports, and in two sizes. The two Apple machines don’t stray too much from the signature MacBook Pro aesthetics at first glance, and there are only a handful of changes that really set them apart. One thing that is for sure, despite the size difference, the two laptops will offer the same raw firepower for demanding tasks.

Some of the shared design tweaks, such as MagSafe, an SD card reader and HDMI port, are welcome. However, a huge notch on a laptop screen is something that has stirred quite the debate. When it comes to raw performance, both the 14-inch and 16-inch models are neck-and-neck, which begs the question as to which one a buyer should go for? Both models can be configured with either an M1 Pro or M1 Max chip, with identical storage and RAM configurations.

The biggest difference between the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models is obviously the size of the display. The 14-inch model comes equipped with a 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display that employs a mini-LED panel, the same screen tech that has been used for the M1-powered 12.4-inch iPad Pro. The screen resolution is 3024 x 1964 pixels, which translates to a pixel density of 254 PPI. The 16-inch MacBook Pro packs a 16.2-inch display with a resolution of 3456 x 2234 pixels. The rest of the specs such as a mini-LED panel, 120Hz refresh rate, a peak brightness of 1600 nits, True Tone, and Wide P3 color gamut support are identical across both variants.

Parity In Power, Disparity In Size

With so many similarities across hardware and software, buyers will have to decide on how much screen real estate they want based on their work scenario. For tasks like graphic design and video-editing where a ton of pixel-level color control and accuracy is required, the 16-inch model is likely to be a better choice. For those desiring a power-packed machine for tasks such as coding, the 14-inch MacBook Pro will serve just about fine. Another consideration is the size and bulk. Carrying the 16-inch MacBook Pro around won’t be as easy considering the dimensions are 1.68 (H) x 35.57 (W) x 24.81 (L) centimeters and the weight comes in at 4.7 pounds. In comparison, the 14-inch model is 25-percent lighter at 3.5 pounds, and measures 1.55 (H) x 31.26 (W) x 22.12 (L) centimeters, making desk space and size of the carrying bag factors worth considering.

Another point to keep in mind is battery and charging. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is said to last up to 17 hours when playing video and 11 hours when surfing the web. The 16-inch MacBook Pro can survive up to 21 hours with video and up to 14 hours of internet surfing with the charger unplugged. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with an 8-core M1 Pro CPU comes bundled with a 67W USB-C power adapter, while the 10-core M1 Pro CPU and M1 Max models arrive with a 96W charger. Irrespective of the CPU one chooses, the 16-inch MacBook Pro comes with a 140W USB-C charging brick. The final differentiator is, of course, the asking price. The 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999, while the 16-inch model will lighten the buyer’s wallet by a minimum of $2,499.
