Here’s every song featured on the official 20th Century Women soundtrack. Indie darling Mike Mills’ third feature 20th Century Women was released in 2016 and earned the filmmaker an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for his hilarious yet touching script. The coming-of-age comedy-drama is partially based on Mills’ own childhood and follows 55-year-old divorcee Dorothea (Annette Bening) and her 15-year-old son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) as they navigate their lives and relationships in 1979 Santa Barbara.
20th Century Women also stars Greta Gerwig as Dorothea’s 20-something tenant Abbie – a free-spirited art-punk photographer recovering from cervical cancer – and Billy Crudup as fellow lodger and handyman William, with Elle Fanning as Jamie’s gal pal and crush Julie. The film follows Dorothea’s attempts to reconnect with her son after enlisting the help of Abbie and Julie, the two people she feels Jamie is closest to. Together, Abbie and Julie teach Jamie how to become a decent man with the help of feminist rhetoric and early punk rock music.
Given the movie’s late 1970s setting and the fact Jamie’s entry into manhood involves being introduced to a lot of early punk by Greta Gerwig’s character, music plays a big part in 20th Century Women. Read on for a list of every song that appears on the official 20th Century Women soundtrack.

As the 20th Century Women soundtrack listing shows, the movie is heavy on the punk and post-punk tracks – hence the inclusion of releases by groups like Talking Heads, Buzzcocks, The Germs and Suicide. The soundtrack juxtaposes such punk songs from Jamie’s coming-of-age with tracks from when Dorothea came of age herself during the 1930s and 1940s, like Benny Goodman’s “In A Sentimental Mood” or “This Heart Of Mine” by Fred Astaire. Some songs play a more central part in the movie like female post-punk band The Raincoats’ debut single “Fairytale In The Supermarket,” which inspires a discussion between Dorothea, Jamie and Greta Gerwig’s 20th Century Women character Abbie about the nature of punk music.
Another artist who features prominently on the 20th Century Women soundtrack is composer Roger Neill, who previously worked with Mike Mills on his second feature Beginners. Neill worked closely with Mills to craft a sound evocative of the late 1970s setting of 20th Century Women, hence his synth-driven score. The titles of Neill’s compositions also tend to refer to specific moments in the story, like the song “The Politics Of Orgasm” which refers to the famous feminist essay of the same name penned by Susan Lydon which Jamie reads during 20th Century Women. Other songs that can be heard in the film but don’t appear on the official 20th Century Women soundtrack include Black Flag’s “Nervous Breakdown” and “(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais” by The Clash.
