30 Rock: 5 Reasons Liz and Jack are Friend Goals (& 5 Not)

In 30 Rock, Liz and Jack formed an odd yet amazing friendship. There are times they are friend goals, for sure, but sometimes they did the opposite.

30 Rock did not make it immediately obvious that Jack Donaghy and Liz Lemon would end up best friends. In fact, all signs pointed to the opposite. When the show first began, viewers will recall that Jack and Liz were mostly at odds with one another.

What eventually becomes evident, however, as that its the stubbornness of the two which ultimately ties them together. The characters are seemingly opposites, yet when one takes a step back, they have many things in common. Both are passionate about their jobs, both are foodies, and both are, frankly, a little whacko.

10 Friend Goals: They Are Honest With Each Other

One thing that Liz and Jack are not is sugar-coaters. Jack says exactly what he wants to say to Liz, critiquing her from her work to her personal life. Liz also says what she wants to Jack, not hesitating in telling him what she thinks he needs to hear. This dynamic was rough at first, but they eventually settled into a comfort zone where they could both speak their minds.

9 Not Friend Goals: They Are Negative

One of the things that draw the two together might be the fact that they both have a tendency for pessimism. The ways in which they view the world are differently negative, but both share a general bitterness and discontentedness. Such attitudes feed off of each other, a dynamic that causes friends to perpetuate behaviors that might not be ideal.

8 Friend Goals: They Share A Sense Of Humor

Liz and Jack both appreciate a good joke. They are similar in their appreciation of humor, Jack’s hyper-macho act sometimes giving away to boyish silliness which Liz can very much relate to.

Liz is ultimately a goofball, and she allows Jack to feel more like he can bring out that side of himself, too.

7 Not Friend Goals: They Are Harsh

The capacity for honesty is great in Liz and Jack’s friendship, but it’s also shocking sometimes, particularly in the early days of when they get to know each other professionally.

Jack is known to make sly digs at Liz’s physical appearance–in fact, it’s mostly Jack who is the culprit when it comes to harsh verbal assertions. It’s clear that this is part of how they communicate, but it’s still not clear whether it’s healthy.

6 Friend Goals: They Aren’t Over-Serious

The seemingly harsh quality of their friendship touches on the fact that Jack and Liz don’t take each other too seriously. Both love their jobs and value them over everything, and in this foundational way, they are serious. But on a day-to-day level, the two enjoy playful banter and light-hearted antics, encouraging a positive connection between them.

5 Not Friend Goals: There’s A Hierarchy

It’s difficult to form a substantial friendship from a basis of inequality–in more ways than one. Jack is Liz’s superior, and, at least at the start, he flouts this over her, doing whatever he wants and demanding that she follow his lead.

He eventually eases up, but it’s hard to believe real friends could come from such circumstances. It doesn’t help that he’s the typical image of male privilege, presiding over a female.

4 Friend Goals: They Look Out For Each Other

As the show goes on it becomes clear that both characters care about each other, even if they show it in subtle ways. Jack sees Liz calling out of work fake-sick, and lets her get away with it. Liz looks out for Jack when her crazy friend comes and terrorizes him.

Jack tries to help Liz adopt a child. The small ways they show their affection are how viewers come to realize that the two seeming rivals have actually grown to form a rather touching bond.

3 Not Friend Goals: They Are Opposites

It’s good to have friends who view the world differently than one’s self. If people are surrounded by those who share their opinions, they live their lives with versions of themselves echoing back at them, never growing and learning.

In the case of Jack and Liz, they are pretty excessively different, however. Jack is a republican white male who abides by typical societal norms. Liz is a liberal female who breaks female stereotypes. In an ideal world, they could be pals, but they’d have to work at it.

2 Friend Goals: They Are Each Other’s Foil

The seemingly opposite characteristics of Liz and Jack are some of the things about them that make them so enjoyable to watch. They do clash, but they also challenge each other and provide for many unusual, thought-provoking scenarios for viewers to ponder. They may rub each other the wrong way every once in a while, but their ability to be friends despite this shows the strength of what people have in common and how it can be more important than what they don’t.

1 Not Friend Goals: They Are Manipulative

Jack and Liz encourage each others’ manipulative behavior. Jack will find information on Liz and use it to make her do something she doesn’t want to do, like write a script she disagrees with. Liz will help Jack by covering for him when he isn’t doing his job well. Jack and Liz are both tricky people, and being friends with each other only causes these behaviors to flourish.
