Once you’ve discovered Japanese animation, the next thing that amazes you is the sheer variety of it. Romance, fantasy, sci-fi, period dramas, you name it. Today, anime has moved into the mainstream, with American companies crating their own animated dramas inspired by everything from comic books to video games.
How do you choose the right anime series for you? For those born under the sign of Cancer the stars have determined that there are some anime that you’ll love, and others that you won’t. The following list narrows it down by focusing on traditional Japanese cartoons, and not just any animated series. That means made in Japan, with original Japanese dialogue, with dubs and subs available for international fans. As great as Avatar: The Last Airbender and Castlevania are, they belong on another list.
10 Identify With: Neon Genesis Evangelion
If you haven’t watched Neon Genesis Evangelion then you probably think it’s another “big giant robot” series. It isn’t. In fact, it’s about families, in particular, mothers. That’s why a Cancer person would like this show so much. It’s not so much the spectacle, which a Cancer person would love anyway, it’s the fascinating dynamic between the characters. No matter how impressive the technology gets, we cannot escape our humanity. It’s creative, subversive, heartbreaking, and visually stunning all at once.
9 Avoid: Cowboy Bebop
The music and visuals are kind of neat, but once you get past the science fiction trappings, Cancer will find this series rather boring. It’s nothing they haven’t seen before when it comes to space travel and shady dealings, just in cartoon form. The show has some tone problems, too, like trying to create a lighthearted tone even when the subject matter requires something more sincere. That would drive a Cancer person nuts.

A person born under the sign of Cancer needs a good story to go along with compelling visuals, and Full Metal Alchemist delivers. The main characters have a back-story that stems from the close relationships that they had with their parents, especially their mother, and how this shapes their future adventures. Virtually every character in this story is flushed out through their family relationships with the world of alchemy serving as a secondary backdrop.
The alchemy angle, and the philosophy that goes along with it, it enough to keep the Cancer occupied. The twist at the end, when the nature of the Full Metal Alchemist universe is explained, will really impress them.
7 Avoid: Attack on Titan
From an animation point of view, Attack on Titan is pretty impressive. It blends CGI with traditional animation seamlessly and looks fantastic. However, we know that’s not enough to keep Cancer enthralled for too long. They won’t even be able to get past the first episode without noticing the story is weak, to put it mildly. Viewers are expected to forget, among other things, about hundreds of years of human history and technology. A Cancer will get through a few episodes until they start asking if there’s a previous series that they missed that explains the present one.
6 Identify With: Death Note
Cancer people love the mysteries of the occult and visceral human drama. Death Note puts both together so beautifully it’s not hard to imagine our morose little crab loving every minute of this classic. This dark look at human nature takes a very basic premise and elevates it to a whole other level by adding demons, gods, and a viciously clever human being who is the most dangerous of all. The real psycho is the nice boy next door, as every Cancer knows.
5 Avoid: Berserk
If you’re a Cancer person who likes shows such as Game of Thrones, it’s possible that you’ll like Berserk. On the other hand, be prepared, because Berserk makes that famous HBO series look like Sesame Street. It’s a cult classic that takes place in Medieval European settings, but instead of focusing primarily on the loves of royalty, the wealthy or famous people it’s about a group of mercenaries trying to climb that social ladder.
There is some great drama between the main characters but there’s just not enough of it to make up for the blood and gore that make this series famous. In fact, real fans of this show barely look at the romance or deep philosophy, they just laugh about Guts hacking and slashing through as much as possible. Cancer’s tastes tend to be more sophisticated.
4 Identify With: Sailor Moon
Before Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, and even characters like X-Men’s Mystique, there was Sailor Moon and her beautiful soldiers. Cancer was into this way before it became a fashionable trend, despite the fact that the animation in the first couple of seasons isn’t very good. That actually improves a lot, and the third season is especially beautiful with the addition of the Outer Scouts. Part of the draw here is the main character, the adorable and big-hearted Usagi, who uses love to conquer all. Cancer will also like Sailor Moon’s backstory and the dynasty of the Moon Kingdom.
3 Avoid: Naruto
Cancers don’t get much out of Shōnen anime anyway since it tends to follow a template of hack and slash without enough story to back it up. Naruto follows that formula and adds some interesting drama too it, but Cancer won’t have the patience to sit through several hundred episodes (no joke) waiting for that fun stuff to happen. A Cancer person will watch the first season and the last season and not even care about anything that happens in between.
2 Identify With: Sword Art Online
An extra gold star on this one if you’re a Cancer person who also likes MMORPGs, because that’s what drives this story. The main characters and basic plot are flushed out early in the first season so we can spend more time exploring this incredible looking fantasy world where anything can happen because it takes place in a video game.
The drama and character development are interesting and the love story will rip your heart out. Then there are the stunning visuals. Sword Art Online has some amazing scenes that were possible because of the unique setting, and Cancer loves beauty and creativity.
1 Avoid: Bleach
Bleach starts out a lot better than other Shōnen anime, with a lot of compelling character arcs and some great animation, but it falls apart sooner than later. Believe it or not, there’s a sad story here connected to the creator of the original manga series, who got so burned out that he stopped caring. It shows. Eventually, the show loses any kind of personal connections or character development and dedicates itself to being another slick anime series with some great visuals but not much else. Cancer won’t be impressed.
