5 Best (& 5 Worst) Animated Superman Films Ranked (According To IMDb)

DC’s Superman has long been among the most prominent heroes, in both comics and various forms of digital media. Along with the many live-action Superman films throughout the past eight decades, the character also has a number of animated features, in the form of both television series and full-length films.

There isn’t exactly one animated Superman film that stands above the rest, especially when it comes to their user ratings on IMDb, as there aren’t any with ratings that really blow the rest out of the water. In preparation for the new film, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, here are the five best, and five worst, animated Superman films, according to their IMDb ratings.

10 Worst: Superman: Doomsday (7.0)

5 Best (& 5 Worst) Animated Superman Films Ranked (According To IMDb)

Despite earning just a 7.0 rating, Superman: Doomsday is actually highly-regarded amongst the user ratings. Many consider its action and grit as some of its best qualities. Fans of DC’s animated catalog typically and collectively love the dark storytelling of the films, especially when handling Superman.

Where the film falters, however, is its inaccuracy in regards to the source material. Adapted from the “Death of Superman” comic book epic, the film notably doesn’t do a great job of bringing the book to life. Also, with a title dedicated to the iconic DC villain, fans were hoping for much more of him than the film actually provided.

9 Best: Superman/Batman: Apocolypse (7.1)

5 Best (& 5 Worst) Animated Superman Films Ranked (According To IMDb)

This probably won’t come as much of a surprise, but some of Superman’s most popular animated films feature more than just one hero. There is hardly a more iconic duo of superheroes than Superman and Batman. So, any film that features both is bound to draw significant attention.

Back in 2010, the two were brought together for Superman/Batman: Apocolypse. Again, this film gets high marks for its excellent action and entertaining story. It also features another beloved DC villain, this time being Darkseid, again creating something for hardcore DC comics fans to latch on to.

8 Worst: Reign of the Supermen (6.8)

5 Best (& 5 Worst) Animated Superman Films Ranked (According To IMDb)

Although Reign of the Supermen seems like a slamdunk feature, and a highly-anticipated follow up to The Death of Superman, it has some holes in it that make it somewhat lackluster.

Many user ratings note that the plot seems fairly predictable, and there was much less of a presence from the Justice League than expected. This isn’t to say it’s an overwhelmingly bad film, but its rating reflects that it missed the mark on meeting fan expectations.

7 Best: Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (7.2)

Another clash of the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight and another fan-favorite comes in the form of Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.

Based on the treasured story from Jeph Loeb, the film is praised for bringing back iconic voice actors like Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly as well as, you guessed it, it’s action sequences. It’s also noted as having solid storytelling and a well-written script creating another good team-up feature between DC’s two most popular heroes.

6 Worst: Superman: Unbound (6.6)

5 Best (& 5 Worst) Animated Superman Films Ranked (According To IMDb)

The 2010 feature from director James Tucker was based on the storyline from the legendary Geoff John. Superman: Unbound, brings Superman face-to-face with one of his most infamous villains, Brainiac.

Although it had great potential to finally show a compelling animated story with one of Superman’s greatest all-time villains, a good number of viewers noted having a hard time latching on to any part of the film’s story. You get the overwhelming sense that this was yet another animated Superman tale that fell just short of expectations.

5 Best: The Death of Superman (7.4)

5 Best (& 5 Worst) Animated Superman Films Ranked (According To IMDb)

The Death of Superman is probably one of the most widely-loved DC animated films, let alone one of the most popular animated Superman efforts. Once again drawing from the beloved comic storyline of the same title, this film probably is the sharpest and most enjoyable adaption.

Honestly, the 7.4 rating it has is surprisingly low and far from indicative of the reviews. Rating aside, it’s a film that any fan should see as it’s one of DC’s best all-time films and by far one of their best of the past five years.

4 Worst: Superman: Red Son (6.3)

5 Best (& 5 Worst) Animated Superman Films Ranked (According To IMDb)

One of DC’s latest films in their animated universe is Superman: Red Son. Adapted from Mark Millar’s graphic novel, the story follows a version of Superman from an alternate universe, this time making the Man of Steel land in Ukraine and working as a tool of the Soviets during the Cold War.

A good deal of the complaints around the film addresses the sense of it being rushed, compacting the story of the source into an 84-minute film. Along with some complaints about the dialogue and animation, it’s no wonder the overall rating is so low.

3 Best: Superman: The Last Son of Krypton (7.7)

5 Best (& 5 Worst) Animated Superman Films Ranked (According To IMDb)

One of the earliest and most memorable animated Superman films is the 1996 precursor to the animated television series, Superman: The Last Son of Krypton. The film covers the typical origin story of Superman, from his initial crash on Earth to becoming the planet’s defender.

The movie is just over an hour-long, so as you can imagine it’s a tremendously difficult task to cram that much of an origin story into such a short amount of time. However, the film is still one of the more highly-regarded animated movies for the character.

2 Worst: Superman: Brainiac Attacks (6.0)

5 Best (& 5 Worst) Animated Superman Films Ranked (According To IMDb)

Back in 2006, dangerously close to the release of the live-action film Superman Returns, came Superman: Brainiac Attacks. The animated film was essentially an extension of the early and popular animated series, except it didn’t bring with it any of the elements that made the show so great.

A good deal of reviews note that some of the scenes drag on for too long, making viewers grow bored and disinterested. Others found issues with the plot and the portrayal of certain characters. All in all, it’s categorized as the worst animated Superman film, and one of the worst DC animated movies in general.

1 Best: The Batman Superman Movie: World’s Finest (7.8)

By far one of the most highly-regarded Superman animated films comes, once again, in the form of a team-up flick with none other than Batman. As one of the earliest crossovers between the two, The Batman Superman Movie: World’s Finest, named after the iconic comic of the same title, gives fans plenty of action between the two as heroes as well as Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent.

Released as a TV movie in 1997, none of the animation is going to blow anyone away. However, the brilliant story and relationship that builds between the two characters is something any fan can appreciate, even over 20 years later. It’s an excellent tale that features the classic voices of Tim Daly, Kevin Conroy, Dana Delany (Lois Lane), Clancy Brown (Lex Luthor), and even Mark Hamill (Joker) himself. It’s one for the ages and one that anyone who considers themselves a fan of any of these characters, or DC as a whole for that matter, should watch.
