For years, animated films have provided viewers a pathway into the world of cinema live-actions cannot provide. Aided with eye-popping and larger-than-life visuals, animated movies have brought so many genres to life, the most recent of which is the world of comic books.

Whether it be direct to video or blockbuster releases, animated superhero films good and bad have brought something new to the world of animation. Each entry is recorded by IMDb for all animation fans to see. Here are five of the best superhero animated films and five of the worst according to IMDb.

10 Best: Big Hero Six (7.8)

Whenever audiences think of Marvel, their minds typically go towards the big franchises like the MCU. However, many forget that Marvel does have properties and characters that exist beyond the reach of the Avengers and X-Men.

Big Hero Six was an unlikely choice for Marvel, a story about a group of kids and a robot who fight crime is the kind of story that shouldn’t work and yet humor, emotional beats, and action-packed moments transformed what could have been a cash grab into a worthwhile film.

9 Worst: Batman: The Killing Joke (6.4)

Comics serve as the best source for any form of a movie, a way to take popular stories and bring them to life in amazing ways. However, this only works if the adaptation is done in a meaningful enough way that honors the source material.

When it was announced the iconic Killing Joke storyline would become an animated film, fans were overjoyed at the prospects. Unfortunately, the adaptation spent far too much time on Batman and Batgirl’s relationship over improving upon the original story, making for a weak adaptation.

8 Best: The Incredibles (8.0)

One can never go wrong with Pixar’s animation and when Brad Bird, the mind behind The Iron Giant and Ratatouille is added into the mix, chances a classic that many would find fall in love with is in the works.

The Incredibles is a superhero film unlike any other, blending a family drama with superhero attributes into a story that honors and improves the genre, making it a true classic and another Pixar gem that has found many fans over the years.

7 Worst: Next Avengers: Heroes Of Tomorrow (6.3)

At one point during the years, producers had an idea that was slowly utilized time and time again to varying results. The idea: create descendants of popular heroes and have them fight iconic villains as their parents did.

As this idea was used more and more, like in Next Avengers: Heroes Of Tomorrow, it slowly became overused and bland, losing the flavor and creativity that once made it unique, turning it into a weak animated film that would never find a sequel.

6 Best: The Flashpoint Paradox (8.1)

Alternate worlds are what make comics so interesting. The prospect of a world where heroes maybe villains or the present-day maybe the dark ages, alternate realities are the foundation of comics and as such, comic book films.

As it is, The Flashpoint Paradox is without a doubt one of the most insane alternate realities out there, rife with possibilities the animated film made a reality made possible through a simple task that had disastrous consequences, making for a film that exceeded all expectations.

5 Worst: The Invincible Iron Man (5.9)

It’s strange how Marvel went from having no footprint in the world of Hollywood to having the greatest cinematic universe. While they had some success before the MCU, for the most part, Marvel struggled in the superhero game, especially when it came to animated films.

Ironically, The Invincible Iron Man came out a year before the revolutionary Iron Man but unlike its live-action counterpart, The Invincible Iron Man failed to deliver, with an average story and so-so animation, this is one film that failed to launch a franchise.

4 Best: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 (8.4)

Making a great sequel in live-action is difficult enough but making a sequel in animation is something many consider to be a herculean feat. It’s difficult to not only continue the story much less top an already fantastic first installment.

Breaking Batman: The Dark Knight Returns into a two-parter was a smart way to keep the film as close to the source material as possible and the sequel managed to not only keep the same tone and animation but expand upon the story and characters in a phenomenal way.

3 Worst: Batman Ninja (5.6)

It goes without saying that a good amount of the animated films created by DC and Warner Brothers usually star and deal with Batman. As such, there are plenty, maybe too many, Batman films out there, each one pushing the boundaries of everyone’s favorite Dark Knight.

Batman: Ninja is a unique film, a movie that has fantastic animation but stumbles with a strange story that doesn’t quite work for the world of Batman. It’s an example of how trying to do an overdone idea differently doesn’t always work.

2 Best: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (8.4)

Comic fans want a superhero film to feel like a comic book, to perfectly recapture the look and feel of a comic, the very things that made them fall in love with the colorful worlds in the first place. As it is, very few have been able to replicate this feeling.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse essentially set the bar for making comic book films feel like comics. With astounding animation that complimented and improved upon the story, creating a masterpiece in a way no other had done before.

1 Worst: Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell (5.5)

There are movies that everyone remembers, that no one wants to or will ever forget, that leave a lasting impression upon us. Then there are movies that are unforgettable, that are so out there, strange and not even worth a watch that we haven’t even heard of.

Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell is such a film, a forgettable direct to DVD feature that no one even remembers being created. From it’s shoddy animation to the strange story and themes to the mediocre voice acting, this one film that many forgot.
