5 Best Pixar Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

Since its debut with Toy Story (1995) — not included in this list for obvious reasons — Pixar has offered animated alternatives to the Disney dominion, even after getting itself absorbed in 2006. From celebrated films like Wall-E to the incandescent Coco, the studio has found and maintained a place in our hearts for a quarter of a century.

Not all its movies are iconic hits, however, a fact which becomes abundantly clear when considering that a few conclude in the most unsatisfactory ways (or were, in general, mediocre.) The list below classifies five of the greatest climaxes ever produced by Pixar, and five that should have been worked on a little bit more before being released.

10 Worst: Cars 3 (2017)

5 Best Pixar Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

The whole finale is hinged on McQueen’s wager with Sterling — that he will retire if he doesn’t win the Florida race. Although he trails behind the others at the beginning, he soon begins to make headway. Later, McQueen chooses to transfer ownership of his number, 95, to Cruz, allowing her to substitute for him in race.

She is at the point of victory when Storm attempts to push her into the barricade, but she flips the coolest flip ever and manages to take the race. McQueen wins his bet by a technicality (as it is his number that crosses the finish line first.)

9 Best: The Incredibles (2004)

5 Best Pixar Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

With the creepiest of intentions, Syndrome kidnaps little Jack-Jack in order to develop him into a supervillain sidekick (after his own evil heart.) Fortunately, and like a bolt of lightning out of the clear blue sky, Jack-Jack’s powers emerge, and several at the same time.

He turns into fire, into a baby-shaped block of solid metal, and into his adorably terrifying demon form, in such rapid succession that it throws Syndrome off balance. Right on time, Elastigirl is flung upwards to catch Jack-Jack and parachute him to safety, and Mr. Incredible destroys the villain’s plane, which accidentally kills Syndrome as well.

8 Worst: Brave (2012)

5 Best Pixar Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

In the ending for Brave, Merida attempts to save her bear-mother, Elinor, by “mending the bond torn by pride”, by the second dawn. Unfortunately, her father, Fergus, believes that his wife is actually the demon-bear, Mor’du, and captures her.

When the real Mor’du arrives, it is Elinor who staves him off, and he is finally finished off by a menhir collapsing on top of him. Although the sun rises over the tapestry, Merida accidentally reestablishes her bond with Elinor, which lifts the witch’s curse on the Queen and the young princes.

7 Best: Inside Out (2015)

5 Best Pixar Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

As a piece on child psychology, Inside Out does a fantastic job of explaining how depression works, and how emotions tend to get complex as people mature. When Joy realizes that Sadness was never trying to hurt Riley, she finds her way back to Headquarters (but Anger has inactivated the emotional response console.)

Thankfully, she lets Sadness take the reins, for the first time, which resets Riley’s core memories and creates a new emotion: bittersweetness. The film goes on to show how her future emotions are all blended together, rather than being dependent on the basic five.

6 Worst: The Good Dinosaur (2015)

5 Best Pixar Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

Spot, the wild child, is taken away by Thunderclap and his band of marauding pterodactyls, while Arlo briefly considers abandoning his friend to his fate. But then he comes to his senses and rushes to the riverbank where Spot is hidden in a tree hollow, surrounded by the predatory villains.

Though the pterodactyls flee (via Arlo’s roar and Spot’s bite), the pair are swept into a waterfall. Their companionship comes to an end, nevertheless, when Spot is sent away to be part of the human family, and Arlo goes back home, proud of his accomplishment.

5 Best: Wall-E (2008)

5 Best Pixar Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

While trying to convince the citizens of the Axiom to return to Earth, Wall-E is almost destroyed by AUTO, whose prime directive has been kept hidden for several centuries (that the ship will not be allowed to return to the dying planet.)

Though Wall-E has the plant with him, this evidence is clearly not enough for the megalomaniac AI, who continues to try to kill the poor garbage-cleaning robot. EVE succeeds at the end, but it seems that Wall-E cannot recall any of the previous events, at least until his friend gives him a little “kiss.” Watching the obese humans learning how to rebuild the planet is heartening, indeed!

4 Worst: Monsters University (2013)

5 Best Pixar Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

In this sequel to Monsters, Inc., Mike is eager to prove how scary he is, so he sneaks into a human summer camp to show everyone how wrong they are about him. None of the camp kids find him the least bit terrifying, so he runs off and hides in the woods. Sulley goes to rescue his friend, against the strict orders of Hardscrabble, but they are unable to return as the Dean has blocked entry from the Monsters’ side.

Mike exhibits his one redeeming quality — intelligence — when he collaborates with Sulley to scare the pursuing camp rangers into producing the scream energy required to brute force their way through the door.

3 Best: Coco (2017)

5 Best Pixar Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

This beautiful mélange of family drama and the supernatural is wrapped within the idea that the dead never really leave the living, that they will continue to exist in the hearts of those who still love them. Miguel manages to bring his estranged great-grandparents back together by explaining the true scenario (Ernesto’s vile betrayal of his so-called best friend.)

Even though Héctor’s photo is lost in the fracas, it is revealed that Coco has kept her father’s original picture safe with her all this time, which saves him from disappearing into the mist forever.

2 Worst: Cars 2 (2011)

5 Best Pixar Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

During the cars’ stint in the UK, they are embroiled in a plot to kill McQueen (generated by Sir Miles Axelrod in his convoluted bid to make the world despise the idea of renewable energy sources.) The villain plants a bomb on Mater, just so the explosion would destroy McQueen.

However, the rusty but dependable tow truck saves the day by forcing him to deactivate the bomb via voice command, proving his involvement in the plot from the very beginning. For this act, Mater is now known as Sir Tow Mater, as he obtains a knighthood for his services.

1 Best: Ratatouille (2007)

The climax of this film is firmly encapsulated within a single scene: that of Anton Ego’s pen gently falling off the dinner table, while the food critic is transported through space and time with a single bite of Remy’s ratatouille.

This event is a consequence of Ego comprehending the gravity of an artist’s creation, claiming in his review that his criticism is not worth the amount of work that goes into the mental and physical act of making something. By the conclusion, Linguini, Colette and Remy and running a new restaurant (with an uncharacteristically cheerful Ego as their business investor).
