5 Cartoons That Should Continue On HBO Max (& 5 That Are Better Off Done)

HBO Max has been out for about half a year now and its release has been a mixed bag between some genuinely glowing content and missed opportunities. If there’s anything going for the budding streaming platform, it’s that it still has more to come for its viewers and plenty of fans for fans of its various brands. This not only means an influx of plenty of beloved series between DC, Turner Classics Movies, and Harry Potter but also the revival, reboots, and reunions of a few series.

When it comes to animation, the idea of a continuation is both exciting and worrying. Plenty of revivals have been good but even more, such as the reboots for Teen Titans and The Powerpuff Girls, have scared off audiences entirely. If HBO Max is looking to start reviving beloved cartoons, there are a few that should be a priority and a couple that need to be avoided entirely.

10 Should Be Done: Over The Garden Wall

5 Cartoons That Should Continue On HBO Max (& 5 That Are Better Off Done)

Over the Garden Wall has been considered an all-time classic ever since the final credits rolled on Wirt and Greg’s adventure. Set in a purgatory-like replication of colonial America, Over the Garden Wall focuses on two lost brothers as they try to escape The Unknown as well as skirt the mysterious denizen known simply as The Beast.

With a cute yet endearing script coupled with some art and animation that makes a genuinely unnerving world, Over the Garden Wall was truly an animation experience that Cartoon Network hadn’t seen in years. And while its short run has been lamented by the fans, there really is nowhere else for its story to go and its hard to expect that the creators can create the same animation and land the same talented actors for a more streamlined series.

9 Should Continue: The Venture Bros.

The Venture Bros. is an Adult Swim original that has managed to avoid cancellation for nearly 20 years and develop seven stellar seasons of increasing quality and intrigue. Initially a parody of Hanna-Barbera action cartoons and Silver Age comics, The Venture Bros. quickly developed a world of its own and gave some true heart to its caped and superpowered characters.

The series would, unfortunately, get canceled within 2020 after Adult Swim’s recent change in regime, but would do well on HBO Max.

8 Should Be Done: Johnny Bravo

Cartoon Network revivals have struggled with incorporating old, beloved properties into the modern age. Teen Titans Go! at the very least was based on a comic that was already parodying the original Cartoon Network classic, but reboots like The Powerpuff Girls and ThunderCats Roar have only gotten under people’s skin.

With that in mind, Johnny Bravo is another classic cartoon whose entire identity and premise could be besmirched upon a revival. Not only do fans not want to see Johnny Bravo’s quintessentially 1950’s character be changed, but HBO Max could struggle with adapting Johnny’s inherent womanizing and other questionable qualities in today’s world.

7 Should Continue: Megas XLR

While some cartoons just end quietly, a few do like to give a decent fight upon ending. Megas XLR has always struggled to find a proper home since its inception. The giant robot comedy was initially meant to be on MTV but was rejected before it found its way to Cartoon Network. While there, it got to show kids an entire mecha journey the likes of which aren’t even seen in Japanese anime.

With the slacker culture and coats of grease from two, New Jersey delinquents, Megas XLR made mecha battles seem like monster truck rallies. The series was sadly canceled before its story’s conclusion, leading to some murmurs from its creators to get the series brought back. With giant robots with muscle cars for heads sadly missing on HBO Max’s lineup, they should give the Megas a call.

6 Should Be Done: Total Drama

The Canadian import about a bunch of teens fighting over some money was an animation classic that audiences everywhere didn’t realize that they wanted. Though it parodied the teenage culture of the mid-2000s, Total Drama still managed to capture the identity of teens with surprising sincerity and a developed sense of character.

However, while the first three seasons are gilded to its most hardcore community, the quality of the animated contests only dropped as the series went on. With the series somehow seeing its Muppet Babies rendition, fans aren’t looking forward to whatever the next version of the series will be.

5 Should Continue: Long Live The Royals

Much like Over the Garden Wall, Long Live the Royals was a Cartoon Network mini-series that told a seemingly complete story. Focusing on an average British Royal family during the medieval times, Long Live the Royals brought modern-day household problems hilariously into the fights and strange traditions of old.

Made by one of the artists behind Regular Show, Long Live the Royals certainly had more potential than just a mini-series would allot. With no kingdom to call their own, the Royals may start looking to conquer HBO Max.

4 Should Be Done: Regular Show

While series like Long Live the Royals and Close Enough can fill in the hole left behind by Regular Show’s ending, the original series should by no means continue. Regular Show had a long, memorable legacy that was filled with constant, obvious pivots to keep the story running, such as Mordecai’s romantic issues and the move to space.

Given that the series still managed to pull off a pretty great ending and has its 25 Years Later comic to fill in some gaps, the series can stay done and be happy with the legacy of slackers and pranksters that it’s left behind.

3 Should Continue: Sym-Bionic Titan

Genndy Tartakovsky is an icon within animation, particularly within the long history of Cartoon Network. The mastermind behind classics such as Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Genndy has mastered making amazing cartoons that both kids and adults can enjoy without irony. However, Genndy does have one major regret in his career: the cancellation of Sym-Bionic Titan.

A mecha series that touched on suburban living and the horrors of surviving a coup, Sym-Bionic Titan was an emotional, action-packed adventure that many still talk about today. With Genndy once again seeing success with the last season of Samurai Jack and his new series Primal, HBO Max could let him try another hand at Lance and Ilana’s journey.

2 Should Be Done: Ed, Edd n Eddy

5 Cartoons That Should Continue On HBO Max (& 5 That Are Better Off Done)

Ed, Edd n Eddy is one of Cartoon Network’s longest-running series and perhaps one of their most beloved. Filled with the nostalgic playing, roughhousing, and scheming of childhoods long gone, Ed, Edd n Eddy was an imaginative comedy that utilized plenty of dynamic and surreal animation to get its jokes across.

The series would see its conclusion in one of the greatest made-for-TV movies in animation history. With such a fitting conclusion to an already beloved legacy, there’s nothing more to prove for the Eds, even within HBO Max.

1 Should Continue: Codename: Kids Next Door

Codename: Kids Next Door is a series that just sounds hard to pitch. It’s literally about kids fighting against adult tyranny but not as part of some imaginary play world but with actual, makeshift weapons and all for the end goal of no longer eating vegetables. It captured childhood imaginations and a sense of adventure perfectly and got to conclude with a pretty touching ending. However, its final episode was only ever meant to be a precursor to an even grander adventure.

Waiting in the creator’s back pocket was a sequel series, Galactic Kids Next Door, which would continue the story’s grand ambitions within space. Sadly, this pitch wouldn’t be greenlit; and despite some hard-fought meetings and campaigns, the sequel hasn’t had any good news in years. With HBO Max promising content that’s out of this world, maybe they could be the ones to bring the Kids Next Door to space.
