5 Charmingly Underrated RomCom Couples (& 5 Who Are Overrated)

The romantic-comedy has always been popular with audiences and it continues to evolve over the years, with more and more diverse and interesting stories being told. However, any rom-com only succeeds so long as the central couple is effective and the audience truly wants to see them together.

Throughout the years, there have been some really great couples in the genre who have been overlooked. Maybe their films were too small or their love story too quirky. Likewise, there are also those couples audiences fell for yet looking back, they now don’t seem so perfect. These underrated and overrated couples highlight the best and worst of the rom-com genre.

10 UNDDATED: Barry & Lena (Punch-Drunk Love)

5 Charmingly Underrated RomCom Couples (& 5 Who Are Overrated)

At the time, seeing indie-darling Paul Thomas Anderson team up with comedian Adam Sandler for a rom-com seemed very bizarre. Of course, Punch-Drunk Love is an appropriately very unusual rom-com but it is still incredibly charming and features a wonderful central couple.

Sandler plays Barry Egan, a lonely and socially awkward man who meets Lena. Given Barry’s own self-loathing, it takes him a while to believe Lena likes him. She helps him come out of his shell and they both fall madly in love in such an offbeat and lovely way.

9 OVERRATED: Tom & Summer (500 Days Of Summer)

5 Charmingly Underrated RomCom Couples (& 5 Who Are Overrated)

Fans viewed 500 Days of Summer as a funny and sweet rom-com where they root for the guy and the girl to finally find happiness together. Thing is, they failed to recognize by the title of the film that Tom and Summer’s relationship has an expiration date.

Their story is really about how a relationship builds and falls apart rather than a honeymoon period caught on film, so to speak. But fans were taken with the middle section, failing to see that Tom and Summer shouldn’t be together. Summer seems unconcerned with hurting Tom’s feelings (whether she means to or not) while Tom feels like he is owed a relationship just because he likes Summer.

8 UNDERRATED: Hannah & Jacob (Crazy Stupid Love)

5 Charmingly Underrated RomCom Couples (& 5 Who Are Overrated)

Before they had audiences falling in love with them in La La Land, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling proved their amazing chemistry in Crazy Stupid Love. While the movie tells various stories of romance, Hannah and Jacob steal the show.

They initially seem at odds and come together through pure (and believable) attraction to each other. But as we watch them chat about nonsense and laugh with each other, it becomes clear that these two are meant to be together.

7 OVERRATED: Sandy & Danny (Grease)

5 Charmingly Underrated RomCom Couples (& 5 Who Are Overrated)

The classic musical Grease stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as two young teens who share a summer romance only to meet back at school. With Sandy being a good girl and Danny being a bad boy, it’s unsure if they can rekindle their romance.

The ending is meant to be a triumph, as the initially naïve Sandy becomes a greaser while Danny stays the same immature greaser to become a couple. This only proves that what they had was a surface-level summer fling. It is also telling that Danny immediately ditches any plans of staying true to his real good boy persona when he sees that Sandy is willing to conform to his macho posturing.

6 UNDERRATED: Kumail & Emily (The Big Sick)

5 Charmingly Underrated RomCom Couples (& 5 Who Are Overrated)

Part of what makes the romance in The Big Sick so unique and charming is that it is drawn from real life. The hilarious film follows an aspiring stand-up comedian named Kumail who begins seeing a girl named Emily, despite his parents arranging a Muslim girl for him to date.

When Emily gets sick, Kumail is forced to confront what she means to him and where his commitments lie. The film is not afraid to portray this relationship as honestly as possibly, showing their mistakes and all.

5 OVERRATED: Edward & Vivian (Pretty Woman)

5 Charmingly Underrated RomCom Couples (& 5 Who Are Overrated)

While Pretty Woman is often regarded as the gold standard of romantic comedies and made Julia Roberts a star of the genre, it is perhaps not the best example of a long-lasting relationship. Richard Gere plays Edward, a big shot businessman who hires call girl Vivian to be his pretend partner for social occasions.

Along the way, Edward helps to turn Vivian into a “high class” woman, in another example of a man essentially creating his ideal woman from scratch. Though he apparently falls in love with her, it’s hard to say if he even knows who Vivian really is or if he just fell in love with the Vivian he crafted.

4 UNDERRATED: Nick & Norah (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist)

5 Charmingly Underrated RomCom Couples (& 5 Who Are Overrated)

Though some rom-coms couples can seem to fall for each other way too quickly, in the case of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, the whirlwind romance works quite well. The film follows the two young titular characters who join forces as they seek out a secret concert during one crazy night in the city.

Instead of feeling like these two lonely and romantically unlucky people just settled for each other, the movie shows how much easier it is to be with someone who lets you be you.

3 OVERRATED: & Mary (There’s Something About Mary)

5 Charmingly Underrated RomCom Couples (& 5 Who Are Overrated)

The hilarious gross-out humor of There’s Something About Mary makes it a classic, but the romance at the center is less memorable and acclaimed. Ben Stiller plays a Ted who after missing his chance to be with his dream girl Mary, hires a private investigator to find her.

Even with the right intentions, Ted’s move is pretty creepy, to say the least. When the investigator falls for Mary and uses his surveillance to woo her, that’s also Ted’s fault. He put Mary in danger with a gross guy all because he had a crush.

2 UNDERRATED: Eva & Albert (Enough Said)

5 Charmingly Underrated RomCom Couples (& 5 Who Are Overrated)

Most rom-coms tend to focus on the younger couples but Enough Said sets itself apart with an honest and charming look at a middle-aged romance story. Eva is a divorced woman who decides to start dating a fellow divorcee named Albert, only to find out she is her new friend’s ex.

It’s so rare to see a story of dating at this age and it gives the movie a fresh feel. Eva and Albert are tired of usual dating games but they are not without their own faults. It is a beautiful and funny story of accepting that no one is perfect but understanding there is someone perfect for you.

1 OVERRATED: Josie & Sam (Never Been Kissed)

Few romantic comedies have aged as poorly as Never Been Kissed. In fact, despite a winning performance from Drew Barrymore, it’s hard to understand how the film even got off the ground in the first place.

Barrymore plays Josie, a reporter assigned to go undercover as a high school student. She also begins falling for her attractive teacher named Sam who also falls for her, despite thinking she is one of his underage students. Then he gets mad when he finds out she was lying about being a teenager, raising the question of not just workplace ethics but in a school as well. The whole relationship is just creepy from the start, and the lovers’ real ages don’t help at all.
