5 DCEU Characters Who Look Better Than Their Comic Counterparts (& 5 Who Look Worse)

The DCEU has provided fans of DC Comics with some of their best – and maybe not so best – moments on the big screen. The films in the new shared universe also have given mainstay characters updated and modern looks. Some have been successful. Others could have used a little more time in development.

From Man of Steel to Birds of Prey, the DCEU charts a unique visual course for iconic DC characters, often trying to realize them in real-world practical ways. The results vary, as the films have, and sometimes within the same movie. Here are five characters who look better than their DC counterpart, and five who don’t.

10 Better: Deathstroke

Deathstroke looks cool in just about any medium he appears in, but his oh so brief appearance in the DCEU gave fans a tantalizing glimpse at a great take on the character. The infamous assassin makes a tiny cameo in the post-credits scene of the theatrical version of Justice League, played by Joe Manganiello. The comic version wears a tunic and chainmail, but the film version upgrades significantly to actual body armor that rivals the Bat-Suit. Time will tell if this version will play any further role in the DCEU.

9 Worse: Superman

The Superman costume is by no means bad and emerges from a highly visually inventive movie in Man of Steel. In trying to go modern, it actually takes a step back. The red trunks from the comic costume are missing, and it’s debatable whether this is an improvement or not, but the biggest weakness of this costume is that it puts Superman in a rubber costume. Film versions of the character never suffered the same silicone fate as Batman and others, and while Henry Cavil makes it work, it feels like a missed opportunity.

8 Better: Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn has evolved significantly in the last decade, perhaps more than any other comics character. Nowhere is this more obvious than her recent (and awesome) DC Universe (now HBO Max) animated series. But her feature film version, portrayed by Margot Robbie, charts her own course. The visual flair of the character expands in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey and informs the look of the animated character (and comics). With this version of Harley, it’s all addition and no subtraction.

7 Worse: Flash

The DCEU version of the Flash costume does not work at all. It pales in comparison to the outstanding adaptation from the CW Arrowverse (especially the first season), and from a purely practical standpoint, makes no sense. The science Barry cites behind it does, but it’s held together by string, which is not exactly aerodynamic.

Ezra Miller looks great in the suit and it definitely reads as the Flash, but the bulky, hodgepodge nature of the suit runs counter to the idea of the Flash being very fast and very lithe.

6 Better: Aquaman

Aquaman is without a doubt one of the most successful comics to screen adaptions in DC Comics history. The DCEU brought vitality to a character who was once so visually boring the comics cut his hand off and gave him a harpoon. Jason Mamoa embodies the character perfectly both in his more natural everyday duds, and the full-on Aquaman costume. The Atlantean armor works very well within the context established in the DCEU and the slightly retro, slightly futuristic vibe the movie went for.

5 Worse: Joker

The Jared Leto Joker is a take. The brilliance of the Joker is that the character is open to endless interpretations, but this one didn’t exactly resonate with audiences. The tattooed and crowned Joker mostly likely is a victim of the editing room, but visually he’s less successful than others. As both the Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix versions of the character proved in their respective films, less is actually more with the Joker, at least when it comes to his look. The busier he gets, the less focus there is on all his insane fun.

4 Better: Shazam

The film version of the classic Shazam outfit isn’t too terribly different from the comic book version, but in subtle ways, it’s a marked improvement. The biggest change comes in the lightning bolt symbol on Billy Batson’s chest, which becomes an illuminated insignia. This is inspired and helps emphasize the change Billy undergoes. His classic white cape remains but becomes a little bit of a hoodie in the movie, a neat design choice that links the costume back to the fact that Billy is still just a kid.

3 Worse: Doomsday

Doomsday could have been cool but is one of the few designs in the DCEU that’s actually underdeveloped. The comic book version is instantly recognizable with his bony spikes and terrifying gray visage. The movie version is a bumpy gray CGI thing that is hard to make out in the murky cinematography at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In the movie, Doomsday bears only a passing resemblance to his comic book counterpart. This isn’t a bad thing necessarily, but the screen version is by no means an improvement.

2 Better: Wonder Woman

One of the best things to come out of the DCEU by far is Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and her costume a huge improvement over the comic book one. Her big-screen look proved so successful the comics have essentially adopted it, incorporating the classic Amazonian armor into her visual style. Both versions share significant elements, like the colors and eagle crest, but the comic book version was for a long time essentially a bathing suit, and the movie version brings the costume into the real-world.

1 Worse: Lex Luthor

The least successful adaptation for the DCEU in both character and concept is without a doubt Lex Luthor. The general idea makes sense – turning Lex into a modern-day tech mogul – but in execution, he’s left bland and boring. His upgrade into full villainry at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice doesn’t exactly help out, though he does finally get a smooth, bald head like the comic book version of the character does. If he shows up again, maybe he’ll get a makeover.
