5 Directors Who Almost Helmed A Fast & Furious Movie (& 5 Who Should)

With the upcoming ninth and tenth installments in the mainline Fast & Furious franchise, “The Fast Saga” will come to an end. But as a sequel to Hobbs & Shaw and multiple other spin-offs are in development, it doesn’t look like the franchise will be pumping the brakes any time soon.

In the past, a few famous filmmakers have been approached or considered for the director’s chair of a Fast & Furious movie, and either turned it down or got cut from the shortlist. So, here are five filmmakers who almost directed a Fast & Furious movie, as well as five who should direct one in the future.

10 Almost Did: Shane Black (Hobbs & Shaw)

Ultimately, Hobbs & Shaw turned out to be in the perfect hands with David Leitch, director of Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2, and uncredited co-director of John Wick. Leitch made a rollicking B-movie capitalizing on Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson’s on-screen chemistry and the limitless possibilities of a $200 million budget.

But before Leitch was hired, Shane Black was initially considered to direct the movie. Having written Lethal Weapon and directed The Nice Guys, Black seems like an obvious choice for a “buddy cop” action comedy.

9 Should: James Gunn

The real hook of the Fast & Furious franchise is the theme of family. Audiences might come for the insane vehicular action, but they stay for the sense of community found in Dom Toretto’s unwavering loyalty to his crew.

The concept of a “found family” has been explored beautifully in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and he’s undoubtedly exploring the same themes in his upcoming reboot-quel to Suicide Squad. Gunn would surely do a terrific job of directing a Fast movie.

8 Almost Did: Louis Leterrier (The Fate Of The Furious)

Before F. Gary Gray was hired to helm The Fate of the Furious, Louis Leterrier was considered for the director’s chair. His big-budget movies, like The Incredible Hulk and Clash of the Titans, have been agreeable, lukewarm blockbusters at best. However, he did helm the first two Transporter movies, which have the unabashed fun of the Fast franchise, so he probably would’ve nailed this.

Ericson Core, who previously worked as the cinematographer on The Fast and the Furious, was also considered to direct the film.

7 Should: David F. Sandberg

Although David F. Sandberg made his name as a horror director with Lights Out, he proved himself to be similarly adept to action comedy with Shazam!. There was a self-aware charm to Shazam! as a small fish in a big pond, joking about the stakes of Billy Batson’s life in comparison to the problems faced by Superman.

Sandberg could bring this playful wit to a small-scale, lower-budget Fast & Furious spin-off, like a movie centered around Roman and Tej (although Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris apparently turned down the chance to do one, making it unlikely).

6 Almost Did: Jeff Celentano (2 Fast 2 Furious)

Following the success of his directorial debut Under the Hula Moon on the film festival circuit in 1995, Jeff Celentano was considered to direct Meet the Deedles, a Disney comedy starring Paul Walker. However, the Mouse House became fearful that Celentano’s take on the film would be too dark, so he was dropped from consideration.

A couple of years later, he was considered for 2 Fast 2 Furious. Celentano wanted to set the movie in Tokyo, which, of course, ended up being where the third movie was set.

5 Should: Taika Waititi

After the radical makeover that Taika Waititi gave the sagging Thor franchise with Thor: Ragnarok, it would be fun to see him take a crack at every franchise. He’s just signed on to helm a Star Wars movie — the sky’s the limit!

Waititi’s smaller movies are intimate character pieces that explore real issues, but Ragnarok was just nonstop fun. He could bring that same energy — along with his unique comic sensibility — to a wildly entertaining Fast & Furious movie.

4 Almost Did: Adam Wingard (The Fate Of The Furious)

Adam Wingard, who made his name with little-seen genre gems like You’re Next and The Guest, is set to make his big-budget blockbuster debut with Godzilla vs. Kong, the crossover event that Legendary’s MonsterVerse has been building toward.

But he could’ve made first blockbuster sooner with The Fate of the Furious. Wingard made it to the studio’s shortlist, but ultimately, F. Gary Gray was hired.

3 Should: Michael Mann

From Heat to Collateral, Michael Mann has directed some of the most sophisticated and visceral action thrillers in the past 30 years. A big problem with the Fast & Furious franchise is action that doesn’t feel real.

With Mann at the helm, the Fast franchise could have action scenes with real grit and intensity that can’t be found in a lot of the bland, CGI-heavy set pieces in the current crop of F&F films.

2 Almost Did: Rob Cohen (The Fate Of The Furious)

Rob Cohen has directed a Fast & Furious movie. In fact, he directed the first one. But he almost directed another one. Before F. Gary Gray was chosen to helm The Fate of the Furious, Vin Diesel expressed an interest in bringing back Cohen for the job.

1 Should: Robert Rodriguez

The genre thrills of Sin City and From Dusk Till Dawn, the delightfully absurd grindhouse action of Machete and the El Mariachi trilogy, and the CGI-ridden spectacle of Alita: Battle Angel mix together to make the perfect cocktail for a mind-blowing Fast & Furious movie.

Robert Rodriguez still has yet to direct a massive box office smash, and a couple of his movies have bombed, but the Fast & Furious brand sells itself. Let Rodriguez have some fun with it and he’ll turn out an infinitely fun entry in the franchise.
