5 Kids WB Shows That Deserve A Reboot (& 5 That Can Stay Canceled)

Reboots are all the rage with the likes of Netflix’s new shows; Pokémon Journeys: The Series and Transformers: War For Cybertron. Kids in the late ’90s and early 2000s had the Kids’ WB to get their fix of heroes, monsters, and robots instead of relying on Netflix.

The afternoon TV block had many impressive shows ranging from Scooby-Doo to Yu-Gi-Oh! as well as animated series based on popular movies. So, while some Kids’ WB shows could stand to be revived in an era where reboots have become the norm, there are others that definitely should remain a thing of the past.

10 Reboot: Xiaolin Showdown

5 Kids WB Shows That Deserve A Reboot (& 5 That Can Stay Canceled)

While Xiaolin Showdown had three seasons and a short sequel series years later, the series never made it past the kids’ block. Similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender, the series was heavily influenced by the anime style and featured four monks-in training who fought against the forces of evil while protecting ancient artifacts known as Shen Gong Wu.

The show boasted a multicultural cast of characters with Kimiko from Japan, Raimundo from Brazil, and Clay from the United States. While the premise was original, its episodic first season was a bit too childish. Xiaolin Showdown would benefit from a 2020 reboot, possibly using the binge-watching model to create a more serialized plot.

9 Stay Canceled: Krypto the Superdog

DC Comics is full of some fun super pets like Ace the Bathound and Streaky the Supercat, but it was Superman’s dog Krypto who got his own television series. The show followed Krypto as he fought crime alongside other DC super-pets.

While the idea of this show was fun, it never really seemed to be more than just superheroes as animals. With so much great DC content coming out of DC Universe, it would be a shame to get more of Krypto the Superdog instead of more Harley Quinn or Young Justice.

8 Reboot: Jackie Chan Adventures

This Jackie Chan-related show centered around the title character, and his uncle and niece collecting magical talisman all while fighting the forces of evil.

The series sported excellent action scenes by Jackie’s character, as well as a complex plot including a redemption arc of season one’s Tohru. With an impressive five-season run, one might think to leave this show alone, but now that Jackie Chan is older and has more time, it would be awesome to get a reboot. This time with the actual Jackie Chan voicing his character.

7 Stay Canceled: Loonatics Unleashed

5 Kids WB Shows That Deserve A Reboot (& 5 That Can Stay Canceled)

Instead of featuring the classic Looney Tunes characters, Loonatics Unleashed took place in the year 2772, and centered around distant descendants of the popular cartoon characters. Each character sported a different color scheme and superpower with a basic superhero episodic plot.

The show was so poorly received that the brand took a four-year hiatus until The Looney Tunes Show in 2011. Unlike Space-Jam this show was a major step in the wrong direction of the classic cartoon property. With Space-Jam 2 on the way, it would be sad if this dark chapter in Looney Tunes history was brought back in any shape or form.

6 Reboot: X-Men: Evolution

Probably one of the most interesting depictions of the mutants in any media, X-Men Evolution centered around teenage versions of the famous characters having to balance both saving the world and high school. The series handled many complex themes and a complex serialized plot that has made this show perfect for both kids and adults to enjoy.

While the X-Men have seen many more depictions since on both TV and in movies, it’s never quite focused on the mutants as teens. With Spider-Man: Homecoming finally giving people a realistic depiction of a hero in high school, it would be great to see this series get brought back, possibly as a live-action show. With Disney+ in full swing, this could be a great way to introduce the mutants into the MCU.

5 Stay Canceled: Ozzy & Drix

Ozzy & Drix was an animated series based on the live-action/animated hybrid film, Osmosis Jones, from 2001. The movie, sporting an amazing cast that included Bill Murray and Chris Rock, had viewers go inside the body as a white blood cell cop took on a deadly virus. It was a buddy cop version of Pixar’s Inside Out.

Sadly, like all good family movies, it was turned into a kids’ series to monopolize on the idea. While not inherently bad, the show lacked the budget of the movie and even had the two title characters end up in a young boy’s body instead of SNL legend, Bill Muray. The series only consisted of 26 episodes and hopefully will stay that way for the foreseeable future.

4 Reboot: Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters

Yu-Gi-Oh! was one of the first shows to popularize the game-card tournament genre, but over the years, it’s become watered down with six incarnations with some building upon the original series and some an alternate world altogether. But nothing ever truly measured up to Yugi and his gang’s original adventures.

It would be great to see the original plot brought back in a more adult way with darker tones and a better/more consistent English dub. With services like Netflix and Crunchyroll releasing more and more adult-centric anime, it would be cool to see this specific anime staple get a 2020 reboot.

3 Stay Canceled: The Mummy: The Animated Series

Another blockbuster movie turned into an animated series was 1999’s version of The Mummy. The show more or less followed the same plot as the movie with the O’Connells traveling around the world as they are chased by Imhotep.

While it was a fun way to bring history lessons to kids, it never lived up the movies, which had a horror element to them as well as a gritty and dangerous feel. Just like the third installment The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, this series felt more like a quick cash grab and a way to take an existing property and shove it down kid’s throats. A potential animated reboot may echo the sentiment surrounding 2017’s live-action The Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise.

2 Reboot: MegaMan NT Warrior

5 Kids WB Shows That Deserve A Reboot (& 5 That Can Stay Canceled)

Mega Man is a household name, spawning several game franchises and TV series, none of which were as good as MegaMan NT Warrior. The show was based on the Mega Man Battle Network video game and followed the model of popular kid’s anime like Pokémon and Digimon. Humans were partnered with NetNavis (robot companions who lived inside the Internet) and fought against evil companies and their NetNavis.

With the recent success of both Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, it’s time for Mega Man to make his return and NT Warrior would be a great version to adapt to the big or small screen.

1 Stay Canceled: Men in Black: The Series

Just like The Mummy had an animated series and a recent film reboot, so did Men in Black. The show followed the original characters Agent K and Agent J as they work to keep the peace of alien life on earth.

The first problem with the show is that it ignored the dramatic ending of the first film where Agent K retires and erases his memory of the Men in Black. Instead, it took the plot of the movie and created 53 episodic episodes. Now, though the Men in Black reboot MIB International was much better than 2017’s The Mummy, it certainly did not live up to the original two films. So the same advice for The Mummy is repeated here: leave this show where it is.
