Anime curses come in all shapes and sizes, from the tragic backstory that propels a hero into the limelight to comic relief –or even a romantic plot twist. In Jujutsu Kaisen, Curses are the spiritual beings created by the negative emotions they spring from.

While they’re a popular trope in manga and anime, writers and artists have created a variety of ways that curses play out in the story. Sometimes, they’re devastating, and the effects are tragic; other times, though, they’re not all that bad.

She transforms painfully into a kind of a blob –she looks something like a formless cat with a misshapen face. As a Narehate, she is immortal, but is in constant pain, and eventually begs Nanachi, her once-human friend, to kill her.

Kousaka’s friends and family love cats, but with his cat allergies, he tends to hate them. After breaking the enshrined statue of a cat one day, though, he’s cursed with the gift of being able to hear and understand what cats are saying.

He must also appease the vengeful spirit of the statue by helping out 100 cats in distress. Kousaka embarks on an adventure to help cats, get rid of the curse, and maybe end up with a date or two.

In Dororo, Hyakkimaru’s father, Daigo Kagemitsu, trades a curse on his newborn son for power and wealth. As a result, the demons take Hyakkimaru’s arms, legs, eyes, nose, ears –even skin. Then, when he’s born, his father abandons him.

Luckily for Hyakkimaru, a kindly doctor takes him in, and raises him like his own son. He gives him prostheses, and when he grows up, he and his BFF Dororo set off to take back his body from the 48 demons who cursed him.

5 Not so bad: The Sohma Family Is Cursed To Turn Into Zodiac Animals (Fruits Basket)

Tohru Honda’s mother dies in Fruits Basket, and with an unsupportive family, she ends up living on a tent in the street. Soon, though, she moves in with the Sohma family, who lie near where she’s camped.

What she discovers is that all 12 members of the family are afflicted with a curse —they turn into Zodiac animals when someone of the opposite sex hugs them. She accepts them, and agrees to keep their secret, and even tries to help lift the curse.

Elizabeth of the Goddess Clan and Meliodas of the Demon Clan are star-crossed lovers who got together 3,00 years ago in Seven Deadly Sins. Meliodas betrayed his Clan, and the Supreme Deity and Demon King both cursed the couple.

Meliodas is immortal, but each time he’s revived, he loses a little more of his emotions. Elizabeth is cursed to die in front of him every time she is reincarnated. Meliodas therefore lives to see her die over and over and over again.

3 Not so bad: Tsubasa Is Cursed By A Supernatural Cat (Nekomonogatari Black)

Tsubasa is a classmate of Koyomi, and one with a sad story of step-parents who barely know she’s alive. After picking up what she thinks is a dead cat, she’s cursed by the oddity called a sawarineko, and becomes a cat-like being who attacks people at night.

Still… Koyomi is a vampire and can regenerate, even when cat-Tsubasa chews his arm. And, it sure does liven up Golden Week. With Shinobi’s help, he’s eventually able to suppress the sawarineko and bring her back to normal.

2 Devastating: The Ignored Death Of A Student Triggers A Murderous Curse (Another)

The curse plaguing Class 3-3 at Yomiyama North Middle School stems back to 1972 when a popular student died tragically –and his class decided to pretend he was still alive. From their lack of observance, the curse was triggered.

It brings a dead person linked somehow to the class back to the school. But, the presence of a dead person masquerading as a living student brings on a string of deaths to the class. The class gains some balance back by the practice of ignoring one student each year.

1 Not so bad: Ranma Saotome Turns Into A Woman Under Cold Water (Ranma 1/2)

While he’s in China, Ranma Saotome and his father fall into cursed springs. The curse means they take the form of whatever died in that spring. Hot water will bring them back to normal, but any exposure to cold water brings it back.

Ranma turns into a girl, while his father turns into a panda at the touch of cold water. Ranma’s trying to train in martial arts, and find love (he ends up having to choose between many), as he makes his way through school.
