5 Of The Best Fairytale Film Adaptations (& 5 Of The Worst) According To IMDb

Over the years, there have been many film adaptations of classic fairytales that have come to the big screen. Some of these films have managed to transform the tales into captivating displays of on-screen storytelling, while some have failed to attract the audience’s attention.

Fairytales like The Beauty & The Beast and Aladdin have seen both animation and live-action productions, whereas stories like Thumbelina have remained out of the film spotlight for some time. From animated feature films to live-action remakes, here are 5 of the best and 5 of the worst fairytale based film according to IMDb.

10 WORST: Puss In Boots (2011, 6.6)

5 Of The Best Fairytale Film Adaptations (& 5 Of The Worst) According To IMDb

This witty animated film about an outlaw cat is loosely based on Italian folklore that later evolved into a European fairytale. This story is not a common pick when going down the list of classic fairytales, but its reputation is solid as the sassy feline character was first seen as one of the main characters in Shrek 2. Unfortunately, the film seems to miss the mark when it comes to presenting something new and interesting to the audience, and instead serves as a mere branch of the Shrek franchise. It isn’t the best rating that IMDb has seen, however, the film had several great moments.

9 BEST: The Princess & The Frog (2009, 7.1)

5 Of The Best Fairytale Film Adaptations (& 5 Of The Worst) According To IMDb

The Princess & The Frog is loosely based on E.D. Baker’s novel The Frog Princess, which, in an inception-like fashion, is drawn from the blueprints of the Brothers Grimm fairytale The Frog Prince. For a number of reasons, this film was set to be a milestone in film history. It was Disney’s first animated musical film since 2004 and the first animated film in which the Disney princess was Black. These bursts of revival and progression sparked interest from the audience, which possibly boosted overall reception and ratings.

8 WORST: Thumbelina (1994, 6.3)

5 Of The Best Fairytale Film Adaptations (& 5 Of The Worst) According To IMDb

Based on Danish fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen, this adaptation of Thumbelina is one filled with nostalgia and wonder. Its mid-90s released marks this a true relic of fantasy animation, but it doesn’t hold up well against other films of similar style.

It often fills the measure of a honeyed walk down memory lane or a proud pick amongst a trove of guilty pleasures. A story about a miniature girl in the company of toads and other animals with their own agenda sounds fantastical in itself, but translating that onto the big screen proves to be more difficult than it seems.

7 BEST: Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs (1937, 7.6)

5 Of The Best Fairytale Film Adaptations (& 5 Of The Worst) According To IMDb

Of German origins and later published by the Brothers Grimm, Snow White is one of the most popular fairytales in history. This adaptation has won many awards and is one of the first to be preserved in the National Film Registry. Several adaptations of this story have been released, however, this 1937 film is amongst the highest-rated to date. This tale of an insecure and desperately vain queen and a princess rising in beauty, knowledge, and power is a showcase of how the foundation of a story is equally important, if not more so than the impressive advancement of animation.

6 WORST: Ella Enchanted (2004, 6.3)

5 Of The Best Fairytale Film Adaptations (& 5 Of The Worst) According To IMDb

Gail Carson Levine’s novel, Ella Enchanted, is a modern twist of the Cinderella fairytale. The film adaptation of this novel stars Anne Hathaway as Ella, and Hugh Dancy as Prince Char. The mixed response from the audience is largely due to the deviation from the book’s original premise. It isn’t the original Cinderella story, nor does it stick to the outline of the novel, and therein lies the problem. Perhaps a different title would have sufficed and allowed for more room for the film to be considered an act of creative liberty.

5 BEST: Tangled (2010, 7.7)

5 Of The Best Fairytale Film Adaptations (& 5 Of The Worst) According To IMDb

As one of the most loved modern fairytale film adaptations to date, Tangled does well in further immortalizing the work of the Brothers Grimm. It is loosely based on the German fairytale Rapunzel, which was also the original title of the film before it was changed to the current name in order to market to a more inclusive audience.

Tangled is a splendid blend of a good script, an excellent blend of animation techniques, and a lot of money. It manages to capture the attention of more than one demographic, partly due to the fact that a modern feature film about Rapunzel hadn’t yet been made at the time of its release. Ultimately, the film was an expensive success.

4 WORST: Red Riding Hood (2011, 5.4)

5 Of The Best Fairytale Film Adaptations (& 5 Of The Worst) According To IMDb

This film takes on romance horror in its attempt to loosely tell the story of the old tale Little Red Riding Hood. Even though Red Riding Hood had notable names like Amanda Seyfried, Billy Burke, and Gary Oldman in its midst, the audience’s feedback was beyond lackluster. Much of the poor reception for this film follows the claim that it tries to be too many things at once instead of focusing on doing one thing well.

3 BEST: Aladdin (1992, 8.0)

5 Of The Best Fairytale Film Adaptations (& 5 Of The Worst) According To IMDb

Aladdin is a jubilant old tale with Middle Eastern origins that explores the effects of poverty, greed, and oppression. The animation shined through the bright color stories, the storytelling, and through the film’s effervescent music numbers. The reception was incredibly high, so much so that it was the highest-grossing film in the year of its release. A live-action adaptation was released in just last year, which, according to IMDb, does not match the success of the original animated film.

2 WORST: Gretel & Hansel (2020, 5.3)

5 Of The Best Fairytale Film Adaptations (& 5 Of The Worst) According To IMDb

Gretel & Hansel is an updated take on German tale Hansel & Gretel. Unfortunately for this horror film, the switched placement of names in the title is the end of anything new or innovative when it comes to storytelling. It garnered praise for its visual effects and scenery, but criticism for the lack of substantial content and overall storyline. Amongst the reviews for this film are many that speak of the unrealized potential that this movie had to be better than it turned out to be in the end.

1 BEST: Beauty & The Beast (1991, 8.0)

The classic French fairytale of Beauty & The Beast is one that is remarkably timeless, as can be seen by its many film adaptations. Among the best of them is this 1991 animated feature film that is sure to have been in the treasured collections of many children and adults alike. The music, the screenplay, and the animation all contribute to the positive reception from critics and the general audience. According to IMDb, this adaptation outperforms its 2017 live-action successor that stars Emma Watson and Dan Stevens.
