5 Reasons Klaus Should Appear In The Vampire Diaries Legacies (& 5 He Shouldnt)

Very few anti-heroes get an ending as great as Klaus Mikaelson. The Original vampire who first appeared in The Vampire Diaries made for such a great character that his family got a whole spin off titled The Originals which went on to have five very successful seasons.

Legacies takes the timeline of the TVD universe forward by exploring what happens to Klaus’ daughter Hope, who’s a young “tri-brid,” which means she’s a vampire, werewolf and witch and is enrolled in the The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted. Hope and Klaus had a beautiful relationship and he practically sacrificed his own life to save Hope. And though Klaus is a fan favorite the fandom has be divided over whether Klaus should be brought back in Legacies.

10 Should: Klaus And Hope’s Dynamic Is Of Major Interest

Seeing Klaus play a father was a refreshing change of pace to the fans of The Vampire Diaries franchise, especially for millennial viewers who have grown up watching Klaus be the ultimate bad vampire playboy. The fandom was rife with anticipation over whether Klaus would be a good father, and the makers did a remarkable job as they depicted Klaus as someone who struggles to balance his dad self with his vampire self. However Klaus got to spent very little time with Hope, since he got killed off in The Originals. Fans have always wanted to explore their relationship further, and giving that a chance in Legacies may just work out.

9 Should Not: His Personal Arc Is Neatly Wrapped Up

Klaus had one of the best arcs in the franchise. Fans always knew he had to die but the fact that he got to understand the significance of a family through Hope gave his storyline the best closure. Opening it back up may be a very bad idea, and would also mess with the premise of the show.

Legacies focuses on Hope who’s an orphan trying to understand her world and her gift (not unlike Harry Potter), there’s a sense of tragedy involved since she does not have a parent to guide her through her formative years. Bringing Klaus back would really upset the set-up.

8 Should: Klaus Could Be The Professor X-Like Presence

5 Reasons Klaus Should Appear In The Vampire Diaries Legacies (& 5 He Shouldnt)

Yes, The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted is obviously very similar to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, in format and naming at least. And Klaus is one of the most ancient vampires in existence, there could be no one better than him to guide young gifted individuals. And though Alaric opened the school and is technically an enhanced original vampire, he is a very new vampire and there could be creatures he doesn’t even know about. Granted Klaus does not share Alaric’s compassion and generosity, which is very Professor X-like, but understanding one’s own powers is one of the main things the school intends to teach the students and Klaus would definitely be an excellent teacher in that aspect.

7 Should Not: Would Take Away From His Sacrifice

One of the most beautiful things about Klaus’s death is that he gives his own life to save his daughter. Klaus takes in all of the darkness of the Hollows magic from his daughter to save her from its power and kills himself in the process.

This sacrifice is also Klaus’s redemption and actually sets up Elijah’s end too, as he also follows Klaus into the after-life. Klaus dies so Hope can live and bringing him back would downplay his sacrifice and take away from its significance.

6 Should: Klaus Could Be Instrumental In Teaching Defence

It is important to not that The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted is opened by Alaric and Caroline both of whom are really new vampires. The school intends to teach young gifted individuals to deal with mythical creatures that cannot be scientifically explained. There could be an array of supernatural characters they themselves probably hadn’t encountered, and Klaus’ knowledge of history and his experience would obviously come in handy. An original vampire could teach the youngsters so much, in terms of defence and protection against the darker energies.

5 Should Not: Would Mess With A Fan Favorite Storyline

Joseph Morgan himself has talked about how Klaus should never come back because it would mess with one of the most uplifting storylines. “Him dying, sacrificing himself to save his daughter, to me, was a fitting kind of him finally learning the greatest lesson and doing an ultimately selfless act. He came from such a selfish place. So I don’t know what the pitch would be that would, you know, for him to show up in a flashback or as a ghost or something. I just feel like it would be a bit cheap to do something like that,” Morgan was quoted saying recently. It’s very rare for long-running characters to get a gratifying, fandom-approved ending (just look at Daenerys), so it would be weird to disrupt it.

4 Should: Legacies Needs More Familiar Names

5 Reasons Klaus Should Appear In The Vampire Diaries Legacies (& 5 He Shouldnt)

Many fans to this day believe that Legacies does not have enough of a standing as a spin-off especially in terms of premise, unlike The Originals which was conceived because the Mikaelsons had a ton of drama and supernatural history to explore.

As a result the show needs some familiar, fan-favorite faces to anchor the storyline for a while, and Alaric alone just doesn’t cut it, since Caroline isn’t in the picture either. So bringing in Klaus, would obviously help bring in some of the older Vampire Diaries audiences.

3 Should Not: Would Mess With Hope’s Character Growth

5 Reasons Klaus Should Appear In The Vampire Diaries Legacies (& 5 He Shouldnt)

Hope’s standing as a character is hugely anchored by her parentage and her past. The fact that she is a Mikaelson who in spite of belonging to the oldest and most powerful family has no one of her own blood left to guide her through her powers is a really interesting aspect. The fact that Hope is an orphan who experienced the death of her parents and her entire family is something that moves the fans to sympathize with her and also helps in depicting her as someone who is strong and self-reliant. Bringing her dad back into the picture would really change things.

2 Should: Klaus Would Work As A Posthumous Consciousness

5 Reasons Klaus Should Appear In The Vampire Diaries Legacies (& 5 He Shouldnt)

Pop culture has really been warming up to the idea of bringing back a dead character in the consciousness of a loved one.

This device was also used in Harry Potter and has a potential of working out, especially since Klaus probably had so much to tell Hope or teach her. Although Morgan has confirmed that bringing him Klaus back even in another form would be a bad idea, the script could make some space for it in the future.

1 Should Not: His Presence Would Be Ungratifying

Klaus has a way of taking over a situation and making it all about himself, and fans have loved that about him, because that’s a big part of who he is. He has a big personality and given the space he takes up all the room and screen time. Legacies has a focus on Hope and the youngsters, and even if Klaus is brought back as a series regular (which is highly unlikely), he would be a secondary character, or a narrative device. For his fans, it would make for a really messy and unrewarding experience.
