Cobra Kai’s Daniel works hard to keep the legacy of Mr. Miyagi alive and make him proud, but he is not without his shortcomings and makes mistakes.

Since The Karate Kid, Daniel LaRusso made many tributes to his former sensei in Cobra Kai. He continues to follow the teachings of Mr. Miyagi and even paid tribute to him several times throughout the show. Now that Daniel has become a sensei himself, he tries his best to fill the shoes of Mr. Miyagi and one day become a great sensei, just like him.

Mr. Miyagi and Daniel developed a father-son relationship throughout the series. After all these years, Daniel continues to show his appreciation for his former mentor and tries to honor his legacy. Though Mr. Miyagi passed away in November 2011, he would be proud of Daniel for the things he has done since he started karate. However, Daniel has some shortcomings that would leave Mr. Miyagi disappointed.

10 He’d Be Proud: Following The Methods And Teachings Of Karate

The “wax on, wax off” training is a memory that Daniel will never forget, to the point where he has now integrated it into his karate training. When Daniel recruited Robby to become his student, he instantly had Robby follow the practices of “wax on, wax off.” Even when he started his own dojo in season 2, Daniel made sure that there was enough work around the place for his students to learn karate.

Mr. Miyagi would also be proud that Daniel is not just teaching any karate, but that the purpose of karate is only for defense. Without a doubt, Mr. Miyagi would smile at Daniel for his efforts to maintain his method of teaching karate for so many years and sharing these teachings to the newest generation.

9 He’d Be Disappointed: Using Karate For Marketing Purposes

Daniel is now a successful businessman who owns numerous auto-dealerships, known as LaRusso Auto Group. Several of his ads feature Daniel showing off his karate skills to intrigue his customers to stop by the shop. Surprisingly, this marketing strategy worked, as he develops a reputation as a former karate tournament champion.

Though there is no harm in the process, Mr. Miyagi may find Daniel using karate for marketing purposes ridiculous. He might think the strategy is a way for Daniel to show off his karate skills and lacks humility.

8 He’d Be Proud: Maintaining Bonsai Trees

Mr. Miyagi was always fond of bonsai trees, which encouraged Daniel to buy a store for him so he could sell them. Though the business did not last, Daniel learned from the best when it comes to maintaining and shaping bonsai trees. Bonsai trees are also helpful for Daniel’s auto business.

Using his knowledge about bonsai trees, Daniel integrated them as a gift for his clients whenever they visit. However, Daniel personally works with bonsai trees because he wants to flawlessly shape and maintain them. This practice shows that he chooses to seriously take care of bonsai trees out of respect for Mr. Miyagi.

7 He’d Be Disappointed: Not Forgiving His Students

During the first season of Cobra Kai, Daniel was not aware of Robby’s parentage. When he eventually learns the truth, he instantly avoids Robby, rather than understanding why Robby kept it a secret. Unfortunately, Daniel repeats this offense in the season 2 finale, when he finds his daughter at Johnny’s apartment. Without hearing from Robby about the truth, he once again loses his trust for Robby.

If Mr. Miyagi saw this, he would be very disappointed in him for holding a grudge against his student. Considering Daniel made many mistakes before, like betraying Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid III, even Mr. Miyagi instantly forgave him and was never resentful towards Daniel for his actions. Unfortunately, Daniel is not treating his students the same way, which is a flaw that he expresses.

6 He’d Be Proud: Advancing His Karate Skills

Despite a short sabbatical from karate, Daniel has not lost his touch. Not only does he continue his karate practice, but Daniel is also advancing and learning new karate skills. For Daniel, he is trying to find balance while in a state of rest.

His advancement in karate resembles Mr. Miyagi when he tried to catch a fly with his chopsticks. This practice only shows that the mentors still must study the ways of karate and that it takes time and patience to achieve new goals and experiences.

5 He’d Be Disappointed: Using The Dojo To Fight Cobra Kai

Before the series, Daniel had a good life, until Johnny came around and reopened Cobra Kai. Since then, Daniel had a feud with Johnny and Cobra Kai to the point where he returned to karate to stop them.

Though it is great that Miyagi-Do Karate opened, the intentions for its opening may appear unfavorable to Mr. Miyagi. Though he too had his differences with Cobra Kai, he never used karate as a way to stomp his enemies. He taught karate so that Daniel could learn to defend himself and be committed to the teachings of the art. Eventually, Daniel admitted that the opening of the dojo was not the best way for him to handle Cobra Kai.

4 He’d Be Proud: Passing On The Miyagi Tradition Of Karate

In The Karate Kid II, Mr. Miyagi shared that the teachings of karate are passed down the family line. Because Mr. Miyagi did not have any children, Daniel became his surrogate son in the process, which only made teaching karate even more valuable to pass on the family tradition.

As a way to respect Mr. Miyagi and his family, Daniel also passes down karate knowledge to his daughter, Samantha, as a little girl. Even though she stopped for a while, she once again started her training with her dad. Knowing that the karate traditions will live on, Mr. Miyagi would not be able to express his utmost gratitude to Daniel for keeping his family heritage alive.

3 He’d Be Disappointed: His Behavior Towards Johnny

Even after 30 years, both Johnny and Daniel still have their bad blood between each other. It is this feud that ignited karate with Daniel again. At one point, Daniel even lost his cool with Johnny, so that he almost violated his only rule of karate, which is to only use it as a defense.

While Johnny does hold a grudge against Daniel, Daniel is partly responsible for the ongoing rivalry. Daniel came off as being cocky and a showoff towards Johnny, so it’s no wonder Johnny is bitter towards him. His behavior would probably make Mr. Miyagi remind Daniel about his roots and his struggles as a teenager. Having experienced a feud before, even Mr. Miyagi would tell Daniel that a long-time rivalry is not healthy, and his current behavior is not going to help. Mr. Miyagi would at least expect better from Daniel – to be more forgiving and let bygones be bygones.

2 He’d Be Proud: Being Patient With His Students

Though Daniel has some issues with forgiving students, he, at least, has patience with them. When Demetri joined Miyagi-Do Karate to defend himself against Cobra Kai, Daniel had quite a challenge. Demetri was always making excuses about the training and was not putting in any effort. However, Daniel never gave up on him and continued to be his teacher.

If anyone had to face this type of behavior, people would have instantly lost their cool. However, surprisingly, Daniel never gave up on Demetri and reassured him that his teachings and efforts would pay off, which it did. If Mr. Miyagi were to witness this situation himself, he would be impressed with how Daniel is as a karate teacher.

1 He’d Be Disappointed: Trying To Become Mr. Miyagi

In Cobra Kai, Daniel utilized the teachings of Mr. Miyagi and brought them to the newest generation of karate students. However, throughout his struggles as a sensei, it is clear that Daniel is trying too hard to become Mr. Miyagi.

Mr. Miyagi would encourage Daniel to follow his own path. Everyone is unique and trying to replicate someone else’s legacy will just make for more challenges with one’s inner self. Daniel needs to let go of such control and try to teach karate to his students by being himself. He needs to build a separate legacy that will help him to achieve his goal to become a sensei.
