The Great Cornholio has an announcement – Beavis and Butt-Head, the animated sit-com created by Mike Judge about two slackers and their oddball observations about youth culture is getting a reboot. Once a highly controversial cornerstone of ’90s television, the MTV series focused on the antics of two teenagers who did nothing all day but watch music videos in between stuffing their faces with junk food, participating in gross-out gags full of ultra-violence, and try to score chicks.

The cultural landscape of the ’00s seems rife with material for Beavis and Butt-Head to set ablaze, but some fans are concerned that a new series will go too far with its insensitive material, while others are afraid it won’t be allowed to go far enough. The series will debut on Comedy Central and run for two seasons, with animation, writing, and voices courtesy of Mike Judge.

10 WHY IT’S A GOOD IDEA: CURRENT SOCIETAL CRITIQUE

Though Beavis and Butt-Head were barely literate and overly-fascinated with any word that could vaguely be misconstrued as a sexual innuendo, they were able to offer some unexpectedly pithy commentary on the state of society and youth culture.

Using its particularly subversive method of societal critique disguised as vapid apathy, a new series could offer astute observations on current affairs as well as pop culture. Today, they can trade their musings about music videos to tangents about Tik-Tok.

9 WHY IT’S NOT: IT COULD INSPIRE STUPID PEOPLE

After several violent incidents around the country purportedly attributed to the content of the series, MTV was forced to air this disclaimer: “Beavis and Butt-Head are not real. They are stupid cartoon people completely made up by this Texas guy whom we hardly even know. Beavis and Butt-Head are dumb, crude, thoughtless, ugly, sexist, self-destructive fools. But for some reason, the little wiener heads make us laugh”.”

Prosecutors never found evidence linking the reprehensible actions of viewers to the series, but it doesn’t mean that impressionable people couldn’t watch Beavis and Butt-Head drop a bowling ball full of explosives off an overpass and not want to recreate it.

8 WHY IT’S A GOOD IDEA: MUSIC VIDEOS

One of the most entertaining segments of each Beavis and Butt-Head episode was their critique of popular music videos, with surprisingly intelligent observations. More than a decade ago networks like MTV and VH1 played nothing but music videos, but now to watch them most fans have to look them up online.

Having Beavis and Butt-Head make sarcastic remarks about new music videos might bring back an appreciation for the art, and playing classic videos from bygone eras of music excellence might introduce new generations to great artists and songs.

7 WHY IT’S NOT: LACK OF INTEREST

It’s been more than two decades since the series officially went off the air in 1997, with a brief comeback in 2011 that was poorly received because it felt like a soulless cash grab. The original series was a defining program for Gen X because it felt like a slice of their lives, but they may not constitute a big enough demographic to justify its success as a reboot.

Even with the brand recognition of the franchise, there might just not be enough interest in a return to prime time for Beavis and Butt-Head. The format of the series and its premise may not generate enough pull with so many content options available to compete against, and it’s not being offered on a streaming format.

6 WHY IT’S A GOOD IDEA: MORE DARIA (AND OTHER GUEST STARS)

Daria was a reoccurring character in the series before she got her own show, which has been in dire need of a reboot itself. Daria was one of the most popular spin-offs from Beavis and Butt-Head (though Judge had no direct involvement in the series) thanks to the character’s deadpan humor and wise-beyond-her-years wit.

Having two new seasons of Beavis and Butt-Head means that there’s a chance Daria would make an appearance long after wandering the halls of Highland High, and allow for a myriad of other guest stars (both live-action and animated).

5 WHY IT’S NOT: INSENSITIVE

As the media landscape changes, consumers are demanding more from their content. Gen Z wants to see marginalized voices of minority communities being showcased, which is something Beavis and Butt-Head will have to consider.

Some of the jokes and humor of Beavis and Butt-Head were taken out of context even in the ’90s, and unless it’s heavily indicated to be satire, the reboot could be seen as crass and lewd in a way that doesn’t fulfill its function any longer.

4 WHY IT’S A GOOD IDEA: THERE’S NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT

An animated sit-com with the objective of discussing current topical events and pop culture zeitgeist from the point of view of two uninspired teenagers may be just what the world needs right now. There’s nothing quite like it in the current landscape of animated series.

It’s premise was original when it debuted, and it would still manage to be original now amidst a wide variety of streaming and cable options. There just aren’t enough animated series about young people trashing things that are so deft and inventive.

3 WHY IT’S NOT: SEXISM

Beavis and Butthead are sexist losers by design, but that doesn’t make how they behave towards woman any less repugnant. In their pursuit of “babes”, they refer to women in all sorts of demoralizing ways that even as comical material never manage to be flattering.

The only way that a new series could redeem its attitude towards women is by making Beavis and Butthead juxtaposed against competent female foils, like Daria.

2 WHY IT’S A GOOD IDEA: GEN X CAN WATCH IT WITH THEIR GEN Z KIDS

Mike Judge has championed the series as a way for Gen X and their Gen Z kids to enjoy the same content together, and find ways to bond over the idiosyncrasies of his iconic characters.

He’s promised that the mischief and mayhem his famous slackers get up to will be something that both generations can enjoy, despite the fact that the world in which they enjoy it will be much changed from the world in which it was created.

1 WHY IT’S NOT: ITS HUMOR WON’T BE RELATABLE

Mike Judge was the voice of a generation in the ’90s, and Beavis and Butt-Head had a particular style of humor that resonated with Gen X. Judge is now middle-aged, and wants to reboot the series for Gen Z when his humor may not be able to resonate with the demographic.

The type of humor found in the series, which was known for being foul and hyper focused on violence and sex, may not find an audience with the Gen Z crowd who don’t find that sort of source material funny.
