5 Sitcoms From The 00s That Are Way Underrated (& 5 That Are Overrated)

Sitcoms are some of the best shows on television. Filled with comedy and love and humorous scenarios, sitcoms have the ability to pull viewers in night after night. Over the years, we’ve been gifted with hundreds of sitcoms. Some have made television gold while others only lasted a season. Sadly, some sitcoms that really resonated with viewers were never renewed while others that have been on season after season didn’t deserve the recognition they were getting.

And while we’re not dissing the iconic shows that have made an impact in sitcom history, we are saying there were other sitcoms that deserved a little more appreciation. Take a look at our list below.

10 UNDERRATED: WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU

When actress Amanda Bynes was settling into her blossoming career after The Amanda Show, she starred in a fun sitcom called What I Like About You. The show lasted for four seasons (2002-2006) and revolved around two sisters living in New York City.

With Bynes’s corky personality and Jennie Garth being the responsible older sister, this show was super relatable. The show was even nominated for various awards at the Teen Choice Awards and Young Artist Awards but it never won. If you ask us, this show deserved more praise (and maybe a few more seasons).

9 OVERRATED: TWO AND A HALF MEN

5 Sitcoms From The 00s That Are Way Underrated (& 5 That Are Overrated)

Produced by Chuck Lorre and starring Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, Angus Turner Jones, and later Ashton Kutcher, Two and a Half Men was an instant hit. With Sheen’s perfect comedic timing and true annoyance with any form of commitment, the show did very well.

From 2003 to 2007, the show was about Charlie, Alan, and Alan’s son all living under the same roof when Alan goes through a divorce. Charlie is a bachelor who lives in an amazing home with a housekeeper who doesn’t necessarily love the intrusion of his family. And while this show is comical, it’s filled with questionable content, and not to mention, bad press thanks to Charlie Sheen’s personal demons.

8 UNDERRATED: WONDERFALLS

Sadly, Wonderfalls only lasted for one season. Presented on Fox back in 2004, Bryan Fuller’s Wonderfalls was about a recent college grad who starts working at a Niagra Falls gift shop. In a surprise development, the protagonist, Jaye, begins talking to small figurines in her gift shop.

The show sounds weirder than it actually is and has some pretty feel-good moments. Jaye learns that when she ignores the thoughts and demands of these small figurines, bad things happen. And while the show only lasted 13 episodes, it had a cult following. In fact, we wouldn’t be mad if there was a re-do!

7 OVERRATED: THAT ’70S SHOW

Is That ’70s Show iconic? Yes. Did it introduce some of Hollywood’s biggest stars? Yes. Is it overrated? Well, it depends on who you talk to.

With an 8.1 rating on IMDb, That ’70s Show was about a group of friends (and their families) living in Wisconsin. We had Eric who was the geeky, good guy. Jackie was the spoiled, pretty girl. Michael was the hot, dumb guy. Hyde’s the rebellious guy with family issues. Donna is the tall, athletic girlfriend to Eric. And Fez is the hilarious exchange student. Together, these six go through the ’70s and all the troubles kids in the ’70s dealt with. It lasted for eight seasons and did incredibly well but some sitcom lovers don’t find the appeal in this goofy show.

6 UNDERRATED: FREAKS AND GEEKS

Produced by Judd Apatow, Freaks and Geeks left TV far too soon. Only lasting one season in 1999-2000, Freaks and Geeks had a huge following due to its cast. The show had the likes of Busy Philipps, Seth Rogen, Jason Segal, and James Franco in it!

The show took place just outside of Detroit and revolved around siblings Lindsay and Sam and their life in high school. Lindsay and her pals are considered the freaks while her brother’s friends are geeks. With such a great concept and all-star cast, it’s shocking this show ended so early. What’s even crazier is that Rotten Tomatoes gave this show a 100% and it was still canceled!

5 OVERRATED: MY NAME IS EARL

My Name Is Earl lasted for four seasons and had 96 episodes to its name. Starring Jason Lee, Jamie Presley, Ethan Suplee, Nadine Valazquez, and Eddie Steeples, the show revolved around karma. After a man (Earl) wins the lottery, he lands himself in the hospital where he learns about karma and how he needs to turn his life around and do better.

Throughout the series, he tries to undo his wrongs and make amends with those he’s wronged. While it’s a great premise for the show—and it did well—it was quickly canceled without a resolution after the fourth season.

4 UNDERRATED: EVEN STEVENS

While everyone was focusing on Hilary Duff’s Lizzie McGuire, Shia LaBeouf’s Even Stevens was left behind — although it was a fantastic show. Lasting for only three seasons, the sitcom revolved around the Stevens household and how Ren and Louis clashed their way through their upbringing.

Ren was the older sister who was very proper and organized while Louis was the goofy younger brother who was always getting into trouble. And while the show didn’t last too long, it did spiral into a movie in 2003, proving that it had a big following.

3 OVERRATED: THE WAR AT HOME

Does it bother anyone else that whenever there’s a family-related sitcom, it typically has a dad who’s sick and tired of his kids? The War at Home is no different, with actor Michael Rapaport starring as Dave the dad.

Living on Long Island, we see Dave’s wild family as he parents his three kids with his wife. Dave is a busy dad who is pretty judgmental over his family, leading to some pretty iffy comments. And while it’s all done in jest, his crude comments over his family was hard to watch. The show premiered on Fox and lasted for three seasons before finally being canceled.

2 UNDERRATED: THE COMEBACK

5 Sitcoms From The 00s That Are Way Underrated (& 5 That Are Overrated)

The Comeback was more of a drama-sitcom but it was still comedic nonetheless. Starring Friends’ Lisa Kudrow, The Comeback lasted for two seasons and followed Valerie Cherish as an actress herself. Valerie lands an acting gig after taking a break, which prompted the network to follow Valerie and create a documentary about her own “comeback” to TV.

The show is both dark and hilarious and deserved to on for longer than two seasons. Written by both Kudrow and Michael Patrick King, fans wouldn’t be upset if there was another reboot for this one.

1 OVERRATED: ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

Arrested Development may have been on for five seasons but there are some viewers who simply don’t see the appeal. Sure, the show has big-name stars and great moments but is it as funny as die-hard fans make it seem? Showing the Bluth family, we see their financial troubles blow up in their faces and how different each member of the family really is.

After the third season, there were rumors of a cancellation, but the show pushed through for another two seasons before finally being cancelled.
