5 Spider-People We Want To See In The Spider-Verse Sequel (& 5 We Don’t)

Spider-Man isn’t the only super hero with spider powers, and here are five spider-people we want to see in the Spider-Verse sequel and five we don’t.

2018’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was not only a massive feat in animation and a revolutionary superhero movie, but it was also a critically-acclaimed and universally beloved film that is setting up an entire cinematic universe on its own. Despite the fact that the Into The Spider-Verse sequel is yet unnamed, fans have already begun to speculate about which characters might come into the fold next.

While the recent news that the Into The Spider-Verse sequel will focus on Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy’s romance doesn’t inform us much about which characters will be featured in the movie, we can certainly infer that the film will focus even less on Peter Parker and more on other Spider-People that Marvel has created over the years. With that said, these are the 5 Spider-People We Want To See In The Spider-Verse Sequel (And 5 We Don’t).

10 WANT: SPIDER-2099 (MIGUEL O’HARA)

At this point, it should be a no-brainer that we need to see more of Spider-2099. After all, the character was featured in the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse post-credits scene, and was voiced by none other than Oscar Isaac.

In the comics, Spider-2099 – a.k.a. Miguel O’Hara – is the Spider-Man of the future. His flashy suit fits perfectly with the Into The Spider-Verse animation style, and his Mexican heritage brings even more diversity to the universe surrounding Miles Morales, who is Afro-Dominican.

Because he has already appeared in the original movie, it is quite possible that Spider-2099 will be back for more in the Into The Spider-Verse sequel. In any case, we really hope that Miguel O’Hara gets more screen time in the franchise!

9 DON’T WANT: SPIDER-MA’AM

The What If? #23 comic book published in 1980 introduced a different kind of Aunt May to Spider-Man fans, which took place on Marvel’s Earth-3123. As the story goes, Peter Parker forgets his lunch one day, and Aunt May rushes to his location in order to take him some food. Well, it just so happens that this was going to be the day when Peter was going to get bitten by a radioactive spider. However, it is Aunt May who gets bitten instead, thus becoming Spider-Ma’am.

Not only is Spider-Ma’am one of the weakest Spider-People in the history of Marvel comics, but she is also considered quite dull. What’s more, it is not like the Into The Spider-Verse franchise needs a tougher Aunt May at all, since the one we originally got was already a force to be reckoned with on her own terms.

8 WANT: SILK (CINDY MOON)

It is no secret that Sony – the studio behind Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – is interested in bringing Silk to the big screen. But how cool would it be if we already had Cindy Moon in the Spider-Verse sequel?

Silk is a fairly new character to the Marvel comic book universe, having only been introduced in 2014’s Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 3. However, there is no doubt that Cindy Moon is one of the smartest and most powerful Spider-People out there, which makes it all the more exciting to consider her for Into The Spider-Verse 2.

We certainly hope there is enough room for a Korean-American Spider-Person to join Miles Morales’ team.

7 DON’T WANT: SPIDER-MONKEY

Sure, Spider-Ham was funny and all, but maybe Miles Morales doesn’t need yet another Spider-Animal on his team.

Spider-Monkey was created in the Marvel Apes universe, in which Peter Parker was actually a monkey. So were Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and Wolverine, by the way. While the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse franchise certainly lends itself to absurdity and wacky characters, it is hard to argue in favor of Spider-Monkey having a place in the sequel. After all, there are many other Spider-People in line who are more interesting and have more fan acclaim.

Sorry, Spider-Monkey, we heard it through the ape vine that there’s no place for you yet.

6 WANT: ARAÑA (ANYA CORAZON)

Anya Corazon, otherwise known as Araña (which literally means “spider” in Spanish), would be a perfect addition to the Into The Spider-Verse franchise led by Miles Morales. Anya in strong, smart, and uses awesome grappling hooks that are shaped like spiders. What’s more, she can create a symbiote-like protective skin that always comes in handy.

Introduced in the 2004 Amazing Fantasy comic book, Araña is half Puerto Rican, which certainly makes her fit in with the diverse cast of Spider-People already in the Spider-Verse franchise. Furthermore, Anya Corazon eventually becomes Spider-Girl in the comics, which would be a compelling story to tell alongside Miles Morales on the big screen.

On TV, Anya Corazon is already part of the Marvel’s Spider-Man animated series on Disney XD.

5 DON’T WANT: SIX-ARM SPIDER-MAN

If you think that the Sinister Six is the only thing in the Spider-Man universe with the number six, then you’re wrong. The 1971 comic book storyline that became known as Marvel’s Six Arms Saga introduced us to the Six-Arm Spider-Man, in which a Peter Parker with six arms fought against villains such as Morbius and Lizard. Then, in 1992, the What If? comics gave us a follow-up to this story, exploring what would have happened if Spider-Man had kept his six arms.

While we acknowledge that there seems to be room for everybody in the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse franchise, we just don’t see a lot of comedic or heroic value in the version of Peter Parker with six arms.

4 WANT: SCARLET SPIDER (BEN REILLY)

Created by the Jackal from Peter Parker’s DNA, Ben Reilly was introduced in the comics in 1975 as Spider-Clone. Over time, interest in this character only grew, eventually landing him the title of Scarlet Spider. In a recent comic book storyline, Ben even assumed the form of the Jackal, which turned out to be quite a “the student becomes the master” story trope.

Nonetheless, Ben Reilly would be a great addition to the Into The Spider-Verse fold. After all, if we’re going to keep exploring different versions of Spider-Man, what’s better than a character who is his literal clone?

3 DON’T WANT: ASSASSIN SPIDER-MAN

On Marvel’s Earth-8351, Peter Parker is a quite different Spider-Man than the one we know. As a matter of fact, this version of Spidey is so strong and so dangerous that it even landed him the title of Assassin Spider-Man.

Despite the fact that Into The Spider-Verse included Spider-Man Noir, who is arguably a more serious and “adult” character than Spider-Ham and Peni Parker, it is probably not a good idea to introduce a Spider-Person who is as violent as the Assassin Spider-Man. Perhaps we can save that character for a potential R-rated Spider-Man movie in the future?

2 WANT: SPIDER-WOMAN (JESSICA DREW)

There have certainly been talks of an all-female spinoff that would take place within the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse franchise. If that idea comes to fruition, it is hard to imagine leaving Spider-Woman – a.k.a. Jessica Drew – out of the fold. So why not introduce her in the sequel?

While there have been a few iterations of the Spider-Woman character, Jessica Drew is perhaps the most famous and most likely to join Miles Morales on the big screen. Among the several Spider-People who identify themselves as female, Jessica is undoubtedly the most natural leader. Moreover, she is very close friends with Carol Danvers, who is now more famous than ever after the release of 2019’s Captain Marvel.

1 DON’T WANT: SPIDERLING (ANNA-MAY PARKER)

When it comes to the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse franchise, anything is possible. With that said, we certainly don’t think that Spiderling is among the characters we wish to see on the big screen anytime soon. The biggest reason of all? Anna-May Parker is Peter and M.J.’s daughter, which means that once again we would revert back to the Parker lineage.

Sony has made it clear that Into The Spider-Verse is Miles Morales’ franchise. With Peter Parker already being in the middle of his own live-action franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we certainly feel that his daughter should not be one of the Spider-Verse characters that we should be focusing on as of yet.
