5 Strongest Sitcom Moms Of The 2000s (& 5 Strongest Dads)

While the 2000s and 2010s saw a lot of sitcom reboots, revivals, and returns, there were plenty of original concept shows that came out as well.

In the 2000s, in particular, we saw some decade-defining sitcoms of all kinds, from modern families to ones from decades past, families with single parents, and those with too-close-for-comfort extended ones. When it comes to moms and dads of that decade in sitcoms, however, who was among the best?

10 Carla Espinosa: Scrubs

A successful, fierce, and opinionated head nurse, Carla left her job at the hospital after the birth of her second child to care for her children. But that didn’t mean that she didn’t still have a hold over everyone on Scrubs who worked there, most of all her husband Chris, the Chief of Surgery.

And while she wasn’t the perfect mom, sometimes having trouble admitting when she was wrong, she was definitely a strong one.

9 Ted Mosby: How I Met Your Mother

While Ted was arguably a pretty weak character in the flashback scenes that made up most of How I Met Your Mother, it became evident at the end of the series that he was a very strong father. He not only dealt with losing the love of his life just over a decade after they met, but he then had to raise their two children on his own.

Based on the timeline laid out in the final season, Tracy had their daughter in 2015 and son in 2017 then passed away in 2024, which means the kids were just nine and seven at the time of her death.

8 Reba Nell Hart: Reba

One of the most underrated sitcoms of that decade, country music icon Reba McEntire starred as a fictional character (with the same name), a single mother of three who aspired to be a singer.

While she was very sarcastic, loved confrontation, and had an overall firecracker personality, she worked hard at several jobs, doing everything from working as a dental assistant to a real estate agent, substitute teacher, and even delivering pizza, so she could provide for her family.

7 Michael Kyle: My Wife and Kids

A young father of three after getting his then girlfriend (now wife) pregnant at the age of 16, he also became a young grandfather when his own teenage son got his girlfriend pregnant. And while Michael took pride in embarrassing his kids every chance he got, he always made sure to teach them right from wrong.

While he was the fun and carefree dad, he also had rules that his kids had to abide by. Still, he was the cool dad the kids could play basketball and video games with because, in a way, he lost some of his own childhood as well having raised them so young.

6 Marie Barone: Everybody Loves Raymond

It wasn’t nice that she constantly belittled her daughter-in-law, passive aggressively insulting everything from the way Debra folded laundry to her cooking. But despite Marie being a traditional Italian mother on Everybody Loves Raymond, she was also stronger than she let on.

Marie would take care of her sons until her dying day, still doing Robert’s laundry and making his meals when he was well into his 40s. And while she could be overbearing and bossy, she did everything out of love for her family and a sense of purpose.

5 Phil Dunphy: Modern Family

The epitome of the corny tv dad, Modern Family’s Phil was full of double entendres, clever dad jokes, and cheesy magic tricks. But he always stepped up when it mattered, doing whatever it took to keep his wife and children happy.

He was a talented realtor and the fun dad the kids could all enjoy hanging around with, even if they didn’t always admit it. Plus, he had a keen interest in tech, which made him a pretty hip dad, too.

4 Claire Dunphy: Modern Family

The polar opposite of her husband Phil, Claire was uptight, rigid, and often anxious. She craved order and structure and found it difficult to achieve with her crazy family and extended family, sometimes leading to her being a bit of a bully. But the balance between she and Phil is what made things work.

Claire recognized her kids for exactly who they were and never expected more from them than she knew they could give. But she was always there to push them to reach their goals and realize their potential, even if she sometimes did it in a pushy, annoying way. She put her own career aspirations on hold to raise them when she got pregnant in college then had the guts to start up a career once again once they were grown.

3 George Lopez: George Lopez

Created by comedian George Lopez, the character is a fictionalized version of him and his home life and career. On the show, he works at an aviation factory.

The character of George, which drew a lot of inspiration from Lopez’s own personal life, had a traumatizing childhood, raised by an alcoholic mother who neglected him and who lied to him about his biological father being dead. Yet despite this, along with his own familial challenges, including a rebellious and spoiled daughter and a dyslexic son, George rose above.

2 Lois Wilkerson: Malcolm in the Middle

It takes a strong mother to deal with five rambunctious sons, all close in age and full of energy, along with a husband who was almost like a sixth son. Lois was high-strung and a control freak, but someone had to be in that household. It would have been mass chaos without her.

Yes, the Malcolm in the Middle matriarch had flaws, including being overbearing and unable to admit her mistakes. But she took on a lot as a mother. And even though she was disliked by the neighbors and the family struggled financially, she always kept it together as best she could.

1 Red Foreman: That ’70s Show

The typical dad of the ’70s, Red ruled the roost on That ’70s Show in a way that was framed by his time in the US Navy. He loved hunting and fishing and while he was often grumpy and tough with his kids, he also loved them dearly and wanted them to learn valuable lessons in life.

Sure, he clearly favored his daddy’s girl daughter Laurie over Eric. And his relationship with Eric was not typical – Red couldn’t go a day without calling Eric a “dumbass!” He wasn’t great at expressing his emotions either. But he held the family together, and even agreed to take in Eric’s friend Hyde when his mother left, an admirable move.
