5 Things We Want To See in Scream 5 (& 5 That We Dont)

The Scream franchise is one of the greatest in the history of the horror genre, with this self-aware deconstruction and reaffirmation of the slasher genre being tons of fun. Much to the delight of older fans, it has recently been confirmed that there will be a fifth instalment to this fantastic franchise, with several of the former cast already being confirmed to be making their return.

Of course, anytime a franchise returns for a fifth film there is always a chance that things can end up being ruined. The Scream franchise has a massive, loyal fanbase and there’s no doubt there will be certain things that they are expecting from the upcoming movie, but there are also certain aspects that do need to be avoided in order for this not to feel repetitive.

10 WANT: Modern Technology

Due to the simple fact that it’s being made in modern times, the writers have the chance to do something totally different with Scream thanks to the technology available to people today. Using social media such as Snapchat or Twitter could be a great way to bring the Scream franchise into the modern world and to new audiences as well.

It would provide a twist that is different if the mystery was linked in with that and it would help make the film really relatable in some respects. Plus, it would also make things scarier simply because it would make the events of Scream 5 more realistic.

9 DON’T WANT: An All Too Serious Tone

5 Things We Want To See in Scream 5 (& 5 That We Dont)

While any horror movie is always going to have an air of seriousness about it, the Scream franchise has always been one of the more ‘fun’ exceptions. Because the person behind the Ghostface mask often likes to torment their victims instead of just chasing them, it can lead to a lot of funny moments.

Ghostface’s classic phone calls normally have some darkly comedic elements to them and it is crucial that Scream 5 continues this tradition. It is not only entertaining, but it relaxes the audience in a false sense of security, making the ensuing murders even more shocking.

8 WANT: The Mystery

The best part about the Scream movies is trying to work out who actually is the killer. There are always subtle hints and clues along the way and it’s up to the audience to try and piece all of that together in order to guess which of the characters is responsible.

It helps make this franchise unique in comparison to other slasher movies where the villain is obvious from the get go. A whodunit mystery is always a great hook and normally leads to a fun surprise, therefore it should absolutely be an element of Scream 5.

7 DON’T WANT: Another Sidney Prescott Story

5 Things We Want To See in Scream 5 (& 5 That We Dont)

While Neve Campbell is confirmed to be returning for her role as Sidney Prescott, it would be good to not see Scream 5 revolve around her and what she has been through. It has yet to be confirmed if Sidney will be the protagonist and while having her involved somehow is great, it doesn’t need to be about her again.

She’s been the core victim character throughout the franchise and now, it feels like the right time to tell a brand new story with new victims having to deal with Ghostface. Sidney will be involved at some point, obviously, but she’d be best used a little less frequently this time around.

6 WANT: Some Callbacks

5 Things We Want To See in Scream 5 (& 5 That We Dont)

When a franchise reaches as many films as Scream has, there is no doubt an audience attached to it that has watched every film countless times. A fifth movie really should work as a bit of fan service and a reward the loyalty of all the people who’ve watched from the start and stuck with it ever since.

While it doesn’t need to become a celebration of everything Scream, it would be good for Scream 5 to have some callbacks to past movies. Whether with it’s a similar death or a reaffirming of certain rules stated from the past, this bit of homaging can be done subtly and it’s something fans would like to see.

5 DON’T WANT: A Carbon Copy Of Previous Storylines

5 Things We Want To See in Scream 5 (& 5 That We Dont)

While there should be some sort of callbacks to former Scream movies, something that part five absolutely shouldn’t do is be exactly the same as them. The storyline needs to have a fresh twist and while it is key to keep the main group young as is tradition in both Scream and the slasher movie, it doesn’t have to be a word-for-word retread of the previous Screams.

Audiences don’t want to see the original Scream remade; they want to see a new chapter. Creating a new angle rather than sticking with what has been done already is crucial to make this film worthwhile.

4 WANT: Bring Back Kirby

Certain actors from the previous movies have been confirmed already to be making a return, with both longtime stars Courtney Cox and David Arquette set to battle Ghostface once again. But one character from Scream 4 who fans want to see back is Kirby.

Hayden Panettiere was a real hit in the last sequel, and fans really want to see her come back. While she did get stabbed, her death wasn’t shown, and bringing her back partway through could be a brilliant surprise for fans.

3 DON’T WANT: New Weapons

5 Things We Want To See in Scream 5 (& 5 That We Dont)

The thing that is scary about Ghostface is the fact that he uses a knife. That’s it. It’s something that everyone can easily connect with and be scared of, and that is why he’s such a great horror character. No matter what, Scream 5 must keep things this way and not try to overcomplicate things.

It could be very easy for the writers to give him a new weapon like a chainsaw or something equally elaborate and brutal, but the humble knife works wonders due to its frightening simplicity. While other weapons could make Ghostface scarier, that would just be overcompensation at this point.

2 WANT: A Main Character’s Death

5 Things We Want To See in Scream 5 (& 5 That We Dont)

While having several of the main characters from past Screams return is great, at some point at least one of them has to be taken out. It’s hard to believe that they’re able to survive literally every sequel since the original, always living to tell the tale and escaping death at the last second.

Scream 5 needs to add some stakes to become less predictable. Taking out a main character early on would be a great way of making fans sit up and take notice, as they would truly know that nobody is safe.

1 DON’T WANT: Changing Ghostface

The one thing that Scream 5 should absolutely not do is change Ghostface. He should be the same style of character, with the classic appearance and the witty jokes, all while being utterly terrifying. Sometimes, horror franchises that go on longer than expected like to change things in a desperate attempt to stay relevant rather than stick to what always worked, and this is always a mistake.

Ghostface is an iconic character and one that audiences will pay to go and see. There’s a reason Ghostface stayed a horror icon for all these years, so much so that his modernized upgrade in the MTV series (pictured above) only attracted hate and ridicule from Scream fans. While there obviously has to be some slight alterations in order for Ghostface to be different and relevant enough, that should come with a justifiable story element, not just a makeover for the sake of having one.
