One way in which a TV show draws in viewers is by implementing the death of a main character, but some shows only fake their passing.

There are many storylines a TV show can use, no matter what its genre is. Yes, some plot points and devices are more common in sitcoms, other in crime show and superhero series, to name just a few. But what should all shows have in common is a strong hero or a heroine whose journey is interesting enough to watch for the audience and who evolves as the series progresses.

Sometimes it looks like there’s nothing more for the hero to do than die… And while there are shows which did kill its main characters, there are also those who just pretended to do so.

10 Killed: Game Of Thrones

The HBO show Game of Thrones is now over but it will stay in the minds and hearts of its fans for a long time. Partially thanks to the way the show treated its heroes, main and supporting alike. In the first season, it looks like there will be multiple main characters with their own storylines — Daenerys, Jon, and Ned Stark, to name just a few. Unfortunately for Ned, the Stark family curse shows its ugly face and when Ned goes to the King’s Landing, everything soon comes crashing down on him and he’s sentenced to death and then executed in front of his daughter.

9 Fakeout: Game Of Thrones

Game of Thrones deserves more than just one mention on this list since killing off its characters is one of the show’s trademarks. One of the fan-favorites always was Jon Snow, Ned Stark’s bastard son who goes to serve at the Night’s Watch but eventually becomes more open to the Wildlings living behind the wall and even falls in love with one of them, Ygritte. Jon’s affection for the Wildlings is one of the reasons why his fellow Night’s Watch’s brothers murder him. Luckily for Jon and all his fans, Melisandre uses magic to bring him back to life relatively shortly afterward.

8 Killed: Grey’s Anatomy

The longer any series goes for, the higher is the possibility that one or more leading characters will die. After all, many things can happen. The actors can decide that it’s time for them to leave the show or they’re forced to do it by unpredictable circumstances. Or the writers can decide that the characters are no longer evolving and remove them from the equation. Whatever its reason was, the successful medical drama Grey’s Anatomy killed off its main characters more than once. The first main character who died was George O’Malley who dies in surgery after he gets hit by a bus.

7 Fakeout: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the most successful vampire TV shows to this date and even though it premiered in the 90s, it’s still popular. Fantasy and sci-fi shows have the advantage that they can more easily bring dead characters back to life than shows taking place in our normal, magic and extraordinary science free world.

This is also what happens to Buffy who dies more than once. In the last episode of the first season, Buffy drowns but her friend Xander brings her back to life just a few moments after. And in the 100th episode, Buffy sacrifices her life to save Dawn and she’s resurrected at the beginning of the next season.

6 Killed: The O.C.

Losing someone you’re close to, especially when you’re young, is bad enough, but losing the girl you love? That’s even worse. Ryan Atwood from The O.C. could certainly tell you a lot about it. When Ryan comes to Orange County, he has to learn to navigate his new life and the new world around him. He falls in love with his neighbor Marissa and the two young people begin their complicated, off-again, on-again relationship. In the third season, Marissa dies when Ryan is driving her to the airport and they get into an accident. Ryan is then never again the same person as he was before.

5 Fakeout: Misfits

The British TV series Misfits was the one superhero show which aired long before superhero shows became all the rage. But doesn’t expect your typical heroes — as the show’s name suggests, its heroes were far from perfect. It was a group of young people who were forced to do probation service and while they were on the first day of the job, they were struck by lightning. Unlike the Flash, though, they didn’t get super speed but a different set of powers, some more useful, some less. The only character who didn’t get any power was Nathan — so it seemed anyway. But when Nathan died, he later woke up in his coffin and it turned out his power was immortality all along.

4 Killed: Misfits

Game of Thrones isn’t the only fantasy show that kills more than one main character and whose heroes sometimes stay dead and sometimes they don’t. Nathan and Curtis meet when they’re doing probation service together and Curtis soon starts dating another member of their little group of Misfits, Alisha.

Once a star athlete who’s paying for his fateful mistake, Curtis gains the ability to turn back time and he saves his friends’ lives this way more than once. But it still isn’t enough to save Curtis when he turns into a zombie and commits suicide rather than live like this.

3 Fakeout: Arrow

Superhero shows are famous for killing off its main heroes (and villains) and then bringing them back to life in various creative ways. It also happens in superhero films, just remember how many times Loki died in the MCU. However, Arrow doesn’t stand behind when it comes to reviving its heroes. Take Sara Lance and Oliver Queen, for example. Both are presumed dead after their ship crashes but they later come back to life. Sara is then killed but is revived thanks to the Lazarus Pit, which properly messes with her head and causes her to reconsider her life and join the team of the time-traveling ship Waverider.

2 Killed: Charmed

As the long-running and fan-favorite fantasy TV show Charmed proves, even if you have magic powers, it still isn’t a guarantee that you’ll be able to survive your own death or bring someone else back to life (unless, you know, you’re Melisandre). In its beginning, the show revolved around three sisters Prue, Phoebe and Piper who descend from a long line of witches. In the last episode of the third season, Prue, played by Shannen Doherty, dies and is later replaced by the sisters’ cousin Paige, portrayed by Rose McGowan. Even after Prue’s death, the show ran for five more seasons before they canceled it.

1 Fakeout: Stranger Things

In the world of Stranger Things, nobody is safe. The super successful show is now awaiting its fourth season and fans have one more reason why to be excited about its premiere. When the series started, it soon became obvious that something unsavory is going on but none of the main characters had any idea how bad the situation really was… until everything went to hell. One of the heroes who did his best to adapt and survive was sheriff Jim Hopper played by David Harbour. Hopper quickly became fan-favorite so the audience was devastated when they learned that he died… until they later found out that Hopper isn’t actually dead. But he’s alive, remains to be seen in the fourth season which should premiere in 2021.
