5 Times Castiel Betrayed Dean (& 5 Times He Saved Him) in Supernatural

Betrayal is a staple of Supernatural. With the show’s heavy focus on the idea of family and found family, tons of minor disputes and meaningful arguments come to a head throughout the series, not least of all between Dean and Castiel. Castiel’s love for Dean and the Winchesters often results in him saving his life, but though the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and Cas betrays Dean multiple times.

These betrayals could be justifiable for the fans but hurtful to Dean – or could just be a colossal misjudgment from Cas. When Castiel saves Dean from certain death or immense pain, though, it is more often than not far more impactful than his betrayals.

10 Betrayed – Book Of The Damned

When Dean realized the Mark of Cain’s attachment to the Book of the Damned and the cosmic consequences that would come from using its magic, he demanded Sam burn it and find another way to remove the Mark. Sam obviously lied and kept using it with Cas’ help.

While audiences do not necessarily feel it is a massive betrayal to them, Dean is massively angered by it all, especially when it results in Charlie’s death. Dean, thanks to the Mark, nearly kills Castiel over the whole thing. While his anger is understandable when Charlie dies, the Mark makes Dean far more ruthless and unforgiving.

9 Saved – Killing Billie

When Dean and Sam are arrested and held in a secret facility following their assumed attempted assassination of the President, they strike a deal with Billie that would help them escape but also cost one of them their lives.

Castiel did not like this. While Mary decided against Dean and Sam’s wishes to be the Winchester taken by Billie, Castiel still saved him from that immeasurable pain when he killed Billie, refusing to let any Winchester die. Castiel then gives a beautiful speech about family and the Winchester’s, a standout moment of Cas’ from the final few seasons.

8 Betrayed – Not Telling Dean & Sam About Jack & The Snake

Mary would eventually meet her end at the hands of Jack, a relief to many fans, but something that destroyed Dean, who unfairly put a lot of blame on Castiel for it happening.

This was because Castiel knew Jack was in a far worse condition than the Winchester’s believed. Castiel kept it to himself that Jack killed his snake Felix, thinking he could fix Jack himself. Dean believed that had he known about Jack sooner, Mary would not have died. It was a stretch by Dean to blame Cas, but he still felt betrayed.

7 Saved – Helping Cure Deanmon

One of the most painfully cut-short stories in Supernatural was the demon Dean storyline, which had so much potential but was over and done within three episodes with help from Sam and Castiel.

Sam hunted and found Dean and trapped him in the bunker, but when he broke free, it was Castiel who stopped Dean from killing Sam and got him tied back up. From there, Deanmon got cured, and Dean returned. Sam and Castiel saved Dean from falling deeper into a pit of violence and evil that the real Dean may never have pulled himself out of.

6 Betrayed – When He Stops Doubting Heaven & Frees Sam

Not long after his introduction, Castiel began to show doubt in Heaven and in the life of blindly following orders he had been living. In “The Rapture,” this comes to a head when he tells Dean he has crucial information to give him, against Heaven’s orders.

By the end of the episode, though, any modicum of defiance within Castiel got temporarily drilled out of him by Heaven. He leaves Dean alone to deal with the mess of Sam and bails on helping Dean and Sam stop Lilith. In the next episode, the brilliant “When The Levee Breaks,” Castiel continues his betrayal of Dean and following Heaven by freeing Sam from Bobby’s panic room so that Sam can go ahead with killing Lilith and breaking the final seal.

5 Saved – When He Rebels & Joins Team Free Will

Castiel’s complete adherence to the rules and orders of Heaven in “The Rapture” did not last long, though. In the season 4 finale “Lucifer Rising,” Castiel finally abandoned Heaven and joined Team Free Will.

Castiel saved Dean from what was essentially imprisonment by Zachariah and the angels and then saved him again when an Archangel arrived at Chuck’s home. While Dean was unable to stop Sam from releasing Lucifer, Castiel did save his life and did give him a chance to stop it all; he even went on to be a crucial part of stopping the Apocalypse altogether.

4 Betrayed – The Naomi/Angel Tablet Debacle

Seasons 6-9 of Supernatural were not great for Castiel. He made a lot of mistakes, most of which were done with good intentions. But not all of his problems were his fault. In season 8, he found himself under the control of Naomi.

Being under the control of Naomi, one of Supernatural’s most hated characters, led Castiel to lie profusely to Sam and Dean, and all came to a head when he nearly murders Dean under her orders. Dean manages to break Cas free from Naomi’s control, but Cas still leaves Dean and takes the Angel tablet with him, not trusting Dean with it, an admission that greatly hurts Dean.

3 Saved – Gripping Dean Tight & Raising Him From Perdition

The first time Castiel was the savior of Dean Winchester came when the angel famously lifted Dean from Hell, leaving a physical imprint on Dean and a massive impression on Supernatural fans.

Castiel’s debut is the most outstanding character introduction in Supernatural and is made even better by him telling Dean, “I’m the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition.” While Castiel saved Dean under Heaven’s orders, he still saved Dean, and doing so was likely the only thing about the pre-Winchester time of his life he is truly thankful for.

2 Betrayed – Season 6

In season 6 of Supernatural, Castiel forms an alliance with Crowley to break into Purgatory, take the souls, and use them to defeat Raphael, ergo stopping the Apocolypse once more. It was all done from a good place by Castiel.

Believing himself to be so in the right, Castiel betrays Sam and Dean throughout the season. He breaks the wall in Sam’s mind and does not fix it, lies constantly, spies on his friends, and also becomes Godstiel, the most villainous incarnation of Cas through Supernatural’s run. Castiel can get forgiven for everything he does in season 6, given he does it all for a good reason, but there is no doubt it took Dean a long time to get over everything that happened.

1 Saved – The Final Sacrifice

“Despair” proved to live up to its title as it wrongfully saw the final appearance of Castiel, who gave his life to save Dean one last time. It was and forever will be one of the show’s most painful goodbyes.

Using the Empty’s promise to take Castiel when he is truly happy to kill Billie, Castiel professes his love to Dean. It is an incredibly touching, emotional sequence that is hard to process for everybody involved. Dean would never have helped stop Chuck if it were not for Cas’ sacrifice, and it is criminal that he did not get to appear one last time in the show’s final episode.
