5 Underrated Episodes Of Rick And Morty (& 5 That Are Overrated)

Rick and Morty has brought lots of laughs and a slew of epic, mind-boggling, sci-fi concepts in just 4 short seasons. We’ve seen everything from alien simulations to anthropomorphic pickles to memory-altering parasites. With such an inventive, nuanced show rife with absurdities, there’s bound to be episodes that are greatly preferred over others. There are some that, for whatever reason, haven’t quite landed for many despite some clever, funny concepts. Meanwhile, there’s also the tendency to the occasional episode to become overblown. This may be a result of its meme-worthy material or quotable zingers that may inflate its reputation a bit.

With that said, let’s get our portals ready as we delve into 5 underrated episodes of Rick and Morty worth giving another look, as well as some that just might be a bit overblown and overrated.

10 Underrated: The ABC’s Of Beth

5 Underrated Episodes Of Rick And Morty (& 5 That Are Overrated)

On top of being IMDb’s lowest-rated episode of Rick and Morty’s memorable third season, you just don’t hear much discussion in reference to “The ABC’s of Beth.” It tends to be overlooked to a great degree, which is a shame considering its unique and (literally) colorful premise.

Sure, it might be a stretch to describe it as “laugh-out-loud hysterical,” but it does have its bout of humor – like when Rick goes through a list of twisted, lethal toys Beth requested her father make for her as a child. The colorful imaginary world of Froopyland sets the backdrop for a pretty entertaining watch. It’s endearing to see a rare Beth-centric episode in which Rick bonds with his daughter, regardless of the insane circumstances surrounding it.

9 Overrated: Morty’s Mind Blowers

5 Underrated Episodes Of Rick And Morty (& 5 That Are Overrated)

This is quite the wild ride, which is renowned for containing some rapid-fire concepts that are both creative and funny. And certainly “Morty’s Mind Blowers” has its moments, like a Morty memory involving a perceived moon-based conspiracy that wrongly condemns an innocent man to death.

Overall though, this boils down to a retreading of “Interdimensional Cable” yet again with a new coat of paint. The pacing’s a bit off too, as many of the memory scenes either seem to take too long to get to its “punch,” or simply whiz by too quickly. It’s a fun episode, though it comes with a few more flaws than the hype around it might reveal.

8 Underrated: Look Who’s Purging Now

5 Underrated Episodes Of Rick And Morty (& 5 That Are Overrated)

Many episodes of Rick and Morty thrive on their array of different pop-culture references. For the most part, this one leans on a single reference – specifically, The Purge – which tends to turn off a good chunk of the show’s audience, particularly those who didn’t see or care for the film.

Still, even if it’s not one of the more mind-boggling or hysterical romps, “Look Who’s Purging Now” is a clever satire and has an engaging plot to boot. It’s also particularly amusing to see a usually timid, thoughtful Morty just completely lose it in his Megaman suit by the end of the episode.

7 Overrated: Get Schwifty

5 Underrated Episodes Of Rick And Morty (& 5 That Are Overrated)

When we use the term “overrated” here, we’re mainly referring to the buzz surrounding the trademark song, which many point to as the source of this episode’s humor despite being only a small part of it. For a romp that’s blown up into the stratosphere in terms of its meme-material and quotable bits, it’s remarkably unremarkable, and not nearly as funny as our protagonists’ wacky song it revolves around.

The premise involves floating alien heads imploring the earthlings to come up with a tune for a musical competition. Humorous enough – especially when some on earth turn this into a weird new religion. Yet, it’s really the goofy, random song itself that carries the weight of most of the episode. Take that out of the equation, and “Get Schwifty” is a pretty tepid experience.

6 Underrated: Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate

5 Underrated Episodes Of Rick And Morty (& 5 That Are Overrated)

It may be tough to make a case for this one considering we just knocked “Morty’s Mind Blowers.” At the same time, it’s also tough to argue that this more direct sequel to “Interdimensional Cable” somehow deserves its place as one of the lowest-rated episodes on IMDb.

Sure, its alien and alternate-dimension show gags may fall short of the mark compared to its predecessor. Yet, that’s partly because the first “Interdimensional Cable” was just so achingly funny. And many bits here are no slouch. Who can forget classics like “Lil Bits” and “How They Do It,” where we get an in-depth look at the strange process of making a Plumbus? The phallic “B plot” involving Jerry is also an amusing diversion amidst the rapid-fire TV randomness.

5 Overrated: One Flew Over The Crewcoo’s Morty

5 Underrated Episodes Of Rick And Morty (& 5 That Are Overrated)

This one tends to be remembered more for its popular “you son of a b****, I’m in!” memes rather than its story, which manages to be pretty busy and convoluted.

It basically plays out like a wacky sci-fi version of a heist plot, though many that aren’t well-versed in films like Ocean’s Eleven found this one tough to get into. Its jokes have been criticized as lacking the subtlety and cleverness the show’s known for, feeling a tad forced or desperate to garner laughs. It has its entertaining moments, thanks to its colorful reference-based cast, but falls flat overall.

4 Underrated: Something Ricked This Way Comes

5 Underrated Episodes Of Rick And Morty (& 5 That Are Overrated)

In this episode, Summer takes on a gig at a shop in which the devil himself sells goods that grant powers laced with ironic curses that make the powers pointless. It’s fairly subdued, but the array of amusing shop items shown provides some yuks. You’ve also got a clever, chuckle-worthy Plutonian “B plot” after Jerry insists that Pluto is, in fact, still a planet.

It may feel a bit more like a Twilight Zone episode than a zany, deep sci-fi epic, but “Something Ricked This Way Comes” is still an entertaining watch. It also ends emphatically with Rick and Summer engaging in a payoff that’s sure to coax some laughs with how out of left field it is.

3 Overrated: Close Rick-counters Of The Rick Kind

5 Underrated Episodes Of Rick And Morty (& 5 That Are Overrated)

As humorous as Rick may be, an episode that features dozens of this character comprising much of the dialogue can grow a bit tedious. Yet, this managed to become one of the highest-rated episodes on IMDb.

In this episode, Rick and Morty C-137 find themselves in hot water when Rick gets accused of murdering several alternate dimension versions of himself. This leads to some crazy shenanigans and action scenes involving an endless slew of Ricks and Mortys. Though it’s got its memorable moments, this Council of Ricks premise has easily been topped by season 3’s “The Ricklantis Mixup,” making this look a bit more tepid by comparison.

2 Underrated: Rick Potion #9

5 Underrated Episodes Of Rick And Morty (& 5 That Are Overrated)

Diehard fans tend to reminisce on the classic episodes from season 1, though you don’t often hear about this 6th episode; at least not to the extent that this epic romp deserves.

Morty’s request for a love potion from Rick eventually leads the entire world to morph into mutated “Cronenbergs.” What follows is some achingly funny moments and classic lines. On top of this, the episode marks a pretty significant and pivotal moment in Rick and Morty lore – with our protagonists migrating to an entirely new dimension, leaving the old one behind for good. This is the point that Harmon and Roiland really seem to establish that we’ll never quite know what to expect when it comes to this insane show.

1 Overrated: Pickle Rick

Along with the “The Rickshank Rickdemption” introducing Rick’s love of McDonald’s Szechuan Sauce, this is really the definitive “meme” episode. Rick’s pickle form has truly taken on icon-level status that has many shouting “I’m Pickle Rick!” even years after its August 2017 debut on Adult Swim.

It’s peculiar, considering the actual episode is not particularly humorous. Don’t get us wrong, it’s a fun, action-laced romp which has Rick “overcoming adversity” in the strangest way possible. Yet, there’s not a lot in terms of comedic value.
