5G Will Have Reached 1 Billion By End Of 2020 But Location Matters

5G access is now expected to be available to more than one billion people by the end of this year. While a significant number and milestone, it is more in reference to concentration in certain parts of the world, as it’s going to take a while before nationwide 5G becomes a reality everywhere. Still, the presence of 5G is starting to become more evident all around the globe.

The rolling out of 5G cell towers and mobile devices is on the rise, as various telecommunication companies begin to harness the full potential of the next-gen network. The realization of new methods of distributing 5G throughout the globe will further help in increasing its reach dramatically as time goes on. For example, projects that aim to envelop large parts of the world in 5G are already in motion, including the use of drones.

According to Ericsson, some people won’t have to wait much longer to see the significant impact that 5G is predicted to have on the internet. Figures gathered during the networking and telecommunications company’s November Mobility report predicts that 15-percent of the world’s entire population, or more than one billion people, will live in an area that’s covered by 5G by the close of this year. However, a large portion of the increasing 5G coverage is due to the growth in China, where the growing number of affordable 5G smartphones, and increased implementation of 5G among service providers, led to the country’s 5G mobile subscriber base reaching 11-percent. North East Asia leads the pack in total 5G subscribers in 2020 at 193 million, with China alone accounting for 175 million. In contrast, North America comes in second with 14 million subscribers.

Total 5G Coverage Will Take A While Longer

The numbers of 5G subscribers might be spiking in China, but some find 5G’s implementation in other parts of the world less than convincing. Despite North America’s predicted 5G subscriptions to increase by a whopping 80-percent by 2026, the region will be closing the year with a 5G subscription base of about 14 million, or a meager 4-percent in total. The figures are even lower in Europe, where the number of total 5G subscriptions have only reached around 1-percent, with 5G subscribers in Western Europe amounting to six million in 2020.

As for the rest of the world, the total number of 5G subscribers in 2020 alone is barely adding up as well, with South East Asia garnering a total of two million, while the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America accounting for only one million. The total amount for everywhere else is less than one million. Considering the number of iPhone users in the US who believe they’re already utilizing 5G, it might take some time before everyone is fully aware of what 5G is, let alone where it is.
