Twin Peaks was very ahead of its time when it debuted on TV screens in 1989. The seamless blending of a conventional detective story with supernatural elements had viewers tuning in week after week to get the next piece of the puzzle.

Meanwhile, a few years later in the mid 90s, The X-Files debuted to rave reviews and offered fans a unique TV experience for its time. Though there are major differences between the two shows they share a lot in common and many believe that The X-Files couldn’t have existed without its predecessor Twin Peaks.

Jan D’Arcy

Jan D’Arcy’s resume as an actor spans from the mid 1970s to today and she has performed in a number popular films and television shows. She appeared as Sylvia Horne in several episodes of Twin Peaks and even revived her role for the third season also known as Twin Peaks The Return. After her initial run on Twin Peaks, D’Arcy appeared in the first season of The X-Files in the episode “Tooms,” one of the scariest episodes of the series. In her sole appearance on the show, D’Arcy plays Judge Kann who is responsible for granting a criminal his parole. That criminal, Tooms, was put away by Agent Mulder and has revenge on his mind once he gets out of custody.

Robyn Lively

Robyn Lively has been working consistently since her debut in the late 1970s as a child actress. Her work has taken her through some of the most popular TV shows and movies of the 80s and her career hasn’t ever slowed down since she started. In the second season of Twin Peaks, Lively played Lana Budding Milford, a contestant in the infamous Miss Twin Peaks contest. Later in the 90s she appeared in one episode of The X-Files in season 6. In “Field Trip,” Lively plays Angela Schiff, a woman who may or may not have died in the woods of North Carolina. She returns throughout the episode in a series of hallucinations and Lively gets a fair amount of screen time.

Frances Bay

Bay is most easily recognized for her many roles as a sweet old lady. Her decades long career saw her in dozens of TV shows and she was most known for her frequent collaborations with David Lynch. In Twin Peaks Bay played Mrs. Tremond, a mysterious woman who only appears in one episode of the series.

She returned to play the role again in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me a few years later and her character was fleshed out more. She appeared in The X-Files in the second season episode Excelsis Dei. She plays an older woman in a nursing home that is being tormented by spirits and she assists Mulder and Scully as they investigate.

Michael Horse

Michael Horse has made a career for himself portraying Native American characters in movies and TV shows. In Twin Peaks he played Deputy Hawk, Sheriff Truman’s soft-spoken but likable partner who acts as a spiritual connection between the world of Twin Peaks and the spiritual world. He appeared in most episodes of the original series and was in almost every episode of The Return as well. He appeared in The X-Files in the first season episode, “Shapes.” In the episode he plays a sheriff on a reservation who calls on the FBI to help investigate a series of attacks that may have been committed by an entity from Native American lore.

Michael J. Anderson

Anderson’s break out role came in Twin Peaks where he portrayed the Man From Another Place, a mysterious man in Agent Cooper’s dream. He would appear sporadically throughout the entire series including the mind bending finale. Anderson would revive the role in Fire Walk With Me and even lend his voice to The Return. In The X-Files, Anderson appeared in the second season episode Humbug. Anderson plays Mr. Nutt, a landlord who runs a trailer park that is inhabited by a cast of circus performers.

Kenneth Welsh

Kenneth Welsh’s work in films has landed him roles in several blockbusters and between other movie and TV roles, he has been working consistently since the 1960s. Fans of Twin Peaks would recognize Welsh as the notorious villain Wyndham Earl who appears in the second season of the series.

Needing to pick things up as ratings began to dip, Earl was introduced to give the story more drive. In the third season of The X-Files, Welsh appeared as Simon Gates in the episode Revelations. Gates is a mysterious man who kills preachers who fake miraculous acts. Like Wyndham Earl, Welsh’s character in The X-Files is a sinister villain.

Richard Beymer

Beymer is perhaps more known for his role in West Side Story than Twin Peaks but he nevertheless made a strong impression on the series. Appearing as Benjamin Horne, a conniving hotel owner, Beymer stole the show and was one of the fan favorite characters in the series. Beymer appeared in Sanguinarium from the fourth season of The X-Files where he played a murderous surgeon who may be possessed. While Beymer’s performance in Twin Peaks was more comical, his portrayal of Dr. Franklin is downright terrifying. Beymer is one of many famous actors that appeared on The X-Files.

Don Davis

Don Davis’ career was a lengthy one that saw him star in many one off TV appearances as well as in big blockbuster movies. As Major Garland Briggs in Twin Peaks he acted as the liaison between the military and whatever mysterious things were happening in the background in the town. Unlike most guest stars on The X-Files who only appear for one episode, Davis played an important part in Agent Scully’s storyline from season 2 of the show. Captain William Scully is Agent Scully’s father and he appears to her in vision form to help her along after she has been kidnapped. Though his stentorian performance is very similar to his character in Twin Peaks he is given an opportunity to show more emotional range in The X-Files.

David Duchovny

Though Duchovny’s career has been defined by his portrayal of Fox Mulder on The X-Files, he actually landed one of his first big roles on Twin Peaks. Appearing as DEA Agent Denise Bryson, Duchovny’s appearance on the show was the first time most viewers had ever seen him. He would also return to the role in the revival series in 2017. Of course, he is most known for playing Mulder in almost every season of The X-Files, though he did depart for the ninth season. He also played the character in the two films and revived the role for the two stand alone seasons that aired in the 2010s. He has also appeared in other series that reference The X-Files.
