9 Best LGBTQ Books That Deserve A Movie Or TV Series Adaptation

While Hollywood has been making incredible strides in recent years to have more LGBTQ+ representation in both movies and television, it is no secret there is still a lot of work to do. Luckily, one of Hollywood’s favorite pastimes is to make a successful book and adapt it to the big screen and, hopefully, see the same success as the novel.

It helps that books have been at the forefront of representation, not just for LGBTQ+ people at large, but also for people of color in the community, whose stories are harder to find. There are plenty of books out there that are perfect, some even having the potential to be the next big YA adaptation.

What he didn’t expect was to get himself involved in a love triangle. One of the reasons this story was so successful was the fact it was written by a Kacen Allen, who identifies as also Black and trans, using both they/them and he/him pronouns, so they were able to relate their life story to Felix, making the emotions feel real.

Playing off of the old teen trope of the popular jock falling in love with the nerdy kid with a bit of a gay twist, We Contain Multitudes follows Jonathan Hopkirk, a Walt Whitman fanboy, and Adam Kurlansky, the star football player as they take part in a pen pal assignment.

At first, it’s clear that Adam is not into the whole idea, but throughout the book, readers see a relationship start to form between the two until a secret romance starts up. 9 Best LGBTQ Books That Deserve A Movie Or TV Series Adaptation

The Extraordinaries takes place in Nova City where superhero obsessed Nick spends most of his time writing his fanfiction for Nova City’s superhero, Shadow Star. As the story goes on, Nick starts to realize things aren’t what they seem and friends he originally thought he knew everything about were keeping secrets from him, and the villain he despised might actually be the hero of the story.

Of course, the fact he hasn’t noticed his best friend, Seth, has been in love with him for a while is 100% Nick’s own fault for being oblivious to the love-stricken boy. The Sequel, Flash Fire, will be released on July 13th, 2021, and will pick up on Nick and Seth’s story, giving any adaptation more content.

3 Song of Achilles – Madeline Miller

9 Best LGBTQ Books That Deserve A Movie Or TV Series Adaptation

The Song of Achilles tells the story of what is possibly one of the most famous fighters and gay men in history, Achilles. Told from the point of view of his best friend and lover, Patroclus, the story follows them both from their childhood and training with Chiron, which sparks their relationship, to their inevitable deaths on the battlefield.

While most of the film adaptations of the stories of Achilles portrayed him as a straight man, it is widely believed that he and Patroclus were close lovers and would more than explain Achilles’ breakdown after Patroclus’ death. While readers are aware of most of Achilles’ stories, The Song of Achilles gives readers a chance to see one of history’s best fighter’s stories be told without hiding his sexuality.

2 Simon Snow Trilogy – Rainbow Rowell

9 Best LGBTQ Books That Deserve A Movie Or TV Series Adaptation

Simon Snow is a very flawed chosen one who doesn’t understand the immense magical power he has, and even worse, he’s roomed with a vampire who wants to kill him. The Simon Snow trilogy takes the idea behind the famous Draco/Harry Potter ship but makes it its own story with different twists and turns and a new kind of magic that relies on popular catchphrases and not Latin words.

The story features a diverse cast and multiple switches in point-of-view, which is beneficial for a TV show adaptation, giving the crew the chance to better tell multiple stories in one story. The final book in the trilogy is set to come out on July 6, 2021.

1 Cemetery Boys – Aiden Thomas

Written by trans author Aiden Thomas, Cemetery Boys follows Yadriel who’s traditional Latinx family has a hard time accepting his new gender identity and refuses to let him be a brujo. With the help of his loyal best friend, Maritza, they do the ceremony in secret and set out to find the ghost of his murder cousin to bring him justice, but end up summoning the wrong ghost and it just so happens to be the school’s bad boy, Julian.

The story covers many harsh topics such as family using deadnames, the wrong pronouns, and not letting him take part in an ancient tradition all boys do, but somehow manages to still be heartfelt and extremely interesting the whole way through.
