The Spider-Man comics have offered many surprises over the years but some plot twists were predictable and the fans saw them coming.

The Spider-Man comics have often been able to surprise their readers, usually, when they led their characters down the paths nobody expected. Some reveals were more shocking than others, such as when Spider-Man died or when the comics suggested Gwen Stacy had an affair with Green Goblin.

However, not all the reveals were as stunning as these. In fact, a handful of plot twists were easy to guess in advance. That was either because the story would be too absurd, the comics have been hinting at them for a long time, or because the comics actually put the plot twists in its title.

9 Aunt May And Doctor Octopus Wouldn’t Get Married

Spider-Man comics have featured many unusual romances but one of the most bizarre ones was Aunt May and Doctor Octopus. Despite what May might have thought, there was no chance that they would ever go through with their marriage ceremony.

May had actually cared for Doctor Octopus but he never truly loved her and only wanted to marry her to get access to her property. In the end, it was only a matter of time before something would break the upcoming marriage, and May and Doctor Octopus would go their separate ways.

8 Revealing His Identity Would Blow Up In Peter’s Face

With so many enemies, it makes sense Peter was worried to reveal his true identity to the world during the events of the Civil War. Tony Stark persuaded him to do it but both the readers and Peter himself suspected it would only be a matter of time before the reveal would blow up in Peter’s face.

Unsurprisingly, that’s exactly what happened. Aunt May was shot and Peter broke ways with Tony since Stark had promised to protect May and Mary Jane but failed to do so. As a result, Peter became a wanted fugitive which made his life even more difficult.

7 Aunt May Wouldn’t Die

Speaking of May’s injury, many fans suspected that she wouldn’t die and the comics would find a way to save her. Peter fought for his aunt’s life, and in the end, made a deal with Mephisto to save her.

That meant paying a heavy price, though, since Mephisto took away the day of Peter and Mary Jane’s marriage, effectively breaking their relationship. So even though aunt May survived, Peter basically sacrificed his bond with Mary Jane for his aunt’s life.

6 Jean DeWolff Dies

Spider-Man has a lot of enemies but also some allies who stand by his side and believe he’s a hero. Captain Jean DeWolff was one of them. That’s why it was such a blow for Spider-Man when she died. Spider-Man didn’t expect it and didn’t stop until he found her killer, the Sin-Eater.

However, unlike Spider-Man, the fans knew what was coming thanks to the comics’ title. It was named The Death of Jean DeWolff which left the readers with an obvious idea of what would happen in the comics. The only question remaining was how exactly would Jean die and whether Spider-Man would capture the killer.

5 MJ Would Learn Spider-Man’s Identity

There was only so much time Mary Jane could be unaware of who Spider-Man truly was. Eventually, she was due to figure it out at some point and readers knew it. So when it finally happened, it fell like a long-awaited step.

For example, in the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series, Peter himself let Mary Jane know the truth fairly early on. That later put a strain on their relationship. In another storyline, Mary Jane figured it out for herself and was only waiting for Peter to come to her and confess the truth.

4 Black Cat Dumps Peter

Speaking of the Ultimate Spider-Man series, the comic book series offered an unusual portrayal of Spider-Man’s and Black Cat’s relationship. Black Cat flirts with Spider-Man in the series but she has no idea that he’s still a teenager, significantly younger than her.

The readers suspected that once she would learn the truth, she wouldn’t be so excited. That also happened as Black Cat was shocked when she discovered how young Peter was and immediately cut off any chance at a romance between them.

3 Zombie Spider-Man Kills Mary Jane

Marvel Zombies didn’t treat its heroes with kindness and Spider-Man was no exception. After turning into a zombie, Peter came home, and unsurprisingly, he ended up succumbing to his urges and killing Mary Jane.

Fortunately for the more sensitive readers, Marvel Zombies: Dead Days didn’t portray the scene in great detail and kept most of the gruesome details hidden. Aunt May’s shocked expression spoke volumes about it anyway. Readers knew something like this had to happen in this kind of story.

2 Spider-Man And Mary Jane Get Married

It was a long time coming since Peter Parker and Mary Jane belong among the most iconic comic book couples. Yet when initially Peter asked Mary Jane to marry him, she refused. She only changed her mind later on, just as the fans suspected she might.

The creators wouldn’t put as much care into the couple over the years if their relationship weren’t to develop further. The wedding was a natural next step, and even though the story One More Day brought the end to their relationship, Peter and Mary Jane were mostly happy together beforehand.

1 Peter Gets His Body Back

Switching bodies or controlling someone else’s body is a popular trope in fiction. Peter got another dose of the infamous Parker luck when his old enemy, Doctor Octopus, took control over his body. Funnily enough, Doctor Octopus didn’t do so bad while he was Peter, or the Superior Spider-Man, as he called himself.

He fell in love, earned a doctorate, and created the successful business Parker Industries. However, it was only a matter of time before Peter would get his body back, and the fans were mostly happy to see it happen when Doctor Octopus sacrificed himself to save his love, Maria.
