9 Ways The Black Widows Storyline Can Continue In The MCU

With Natasha gone, the MCU will surely continue the Black Widow storyline with Yelena. But what about the other Widows? Could they get their own show?

Avengers: Endgame marked the death of the beloved character, Natasha Romanoff, which seemingly putting an end to the Black Widow’s storyline in the MCU. However, Natasha got her own prequel this year, aptly titled Black Widow, and did appear to hint to audiences that they may not have seen the last of the deathly Widows just yet.

Indeed, Yelena Belova’s arrival signals the dawn of a new Black Widow in the MCU, either as part of the Avengers or even the Thunderbolts. Beyond that, Black Widow introduces several unresolved plot points to keep expanding the Widows’ ever-growing corner of the Marvel universe.

9 Red Guardian’s Future With The Widows

Alexei Shostakov makes his MCU debut in Black Widow. Comic book fans know him as the Red Guardian, Russia’s equivalent to Captain America. Indeed, the movie briefly touches on his role as a super-soldier but never fully explores his abilities or the part he used to play in Russian politics.

Kevin Feige recently expressed his interest in having David Harbour back as the Red Guardian. Indeed, Shostakov’s storyline is just beginning, and there’s still a lot of exploring left to do. His presence can complement the Widows’ story by having him as a mentor and even father figure to all.

8 The Iron Maiden’s Arrival

Like Shostakov, Melina Vostokoff is also well-known in Marvel Comics. Fans know her as the Iron Maiden, a supervillain hellbent on killing Natasha Romanoff. The Black Widow movie changes her story and turns her into a hero somewhat reluctantly working for the Red Room.

With Feige confirming he also wants Rachel Weisz back, Melina can return and finally sport her Iron Maiden suit. The movie established her as one of the MCU’s brightest minds, so she could perhaps deflect to SWORD or any other of the “good” government agencies. She could also stay with the now-freed Black Widows and lead them, becoming a Nick Fury-like figure.

7 Taskmaster & Antonia’s Future

The changes to the character of Taskmaster were one of the most controversial aspects of Black Widow. Comic book fans know Taskmaster as Tony Masters, a former SHIELD agent with photographic reflexes.

In the movie, Taskmaster is Antonia Masters, Dreykov’s daughter, who he uses as a tool to complete the Red Room’s most crucial missions. In more ways than one, the MCU’s Taskmaster is the ultimate Black Widow. Despite being one of the movie’s most intriguing characters, Antonia barely appears, and multiple questions about her remain. She could return as the new leader of the Black Widows, or perhaps with a Disney+ show that explores her background and her future as Taskmaster.

6 Tracking Down The Remaining Widows

Before his death, Dreykov states he has multiple mind-controlled Black Widows around the world. Natasha and her family release the Widows imprisoned in the Red Room, but many remain under mind control.

The post-credit scene hints that Yelena is on a path to avenging Natasha’s death, meaning that tracking the Widows is not her priority, or perhaps she already did it. While it’s unlikely that the Widows will get another solo movie, a Disney+ show seems like the way to go. Set in the immediate aftermath of Black Widow, Florence Pugh could star as Yelena on a quest to rescue her fellow Widows.

5 The Red Room Rebuilt

Black Widow ends with the Red Room seemingly destroyed for good. However, it’s not the first time that the institution disappears for a while, only to come back stronger than before. Melina’s mind-controlling technology will also be a coveted possession by multiple countries and organizations, especially after the return of everyone who Thanos snapped away.

The Red Room can come back as either a rehash of its old iteration or a new and improved institution. Either way, it most likely won’t be a force for good because, as the MCU has previously shown that no organization is free of corruption.

4 Redeeming The Black Widow Mantle

Natasha Romanoff’s whole arc was about redemption. She went out of her way to clean the red off her ledger, ultimately committing the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good.

Inspired by her legacy, Yelena and the other Black Widows, now free from Dreykov’s mind control, can strive to turn the public’s perception about the Black Widow program. They can even become their own elite force, an Avengers-like team, albeit on a much smaller scale. It won’t be easy because it took Nat years to change the public’s perception of her, and judging by Yelena’s post-Endgame choices, she doesn’t seem particularly inclined to go straight.

3 Bringing The Winter Guard To The MCU

Considered Russia’s answer to The Avengers, the Winter Guard is a group of superpowered individuals based in Russia. In the comics, they fought alongside the Avengers several times, most notably during the “Maximum Security” and “Kang Wars” crossovers.

Red Guardian is one of the Winter Guard’s most prominent members, although not the Alexei Shostakov version. Other members include the mutant Ursa Major, who apparently made his debut in Black Widow, and the Crimson Dynamo, the Russian version of Iron-Man, who Yelena name-drops during the movie.

2 Red Widow

The Red Widow is the Red Room’s newest project. She is a bloodthirsty and ferocious combatant whose body got covered in scars due to the Red Room’s savage training. She is one of the Winter Guard’s current members and often acts as a leader, much to the Crimson Dynamo’s chagrin.

Red Widow can act as an antagonist in the new Widows storyline. She could also be a part of the upcoming Thunderbolts or belong to the Winter Guard, like her comic book counterpart. The Red Widow also has ties with vampires in the comics, making her an ideal choice to appear in the upcoming Blade movie.

1 Yelena Becoming The New Black Widow

By now, it’s clear that Yelena Belova is the MCU’s new Black Widow. Fans know that Florence Pugh will show up in the upcoming Hawkeye show, and her ties to Valentina hint that she’ll also be part of Contessa’s organization, be it the Thunderbolts or the Dark Avengers.

Having Yelena carry on the mantle is also a way of honoring Natasha’s legacy. Furthermore, it’s the perfect way to keep the character in the MCU while still keeping the emotional impact of Natasha’s death. Chances are Yelena will appear as a supporting player in future MCU projects, just as Natasha did in the Avengers movies. She can also lead her own projects, either Disney+ shows or even a sequel to Black Widow.
