90 Day Fiancé: Why Fans Feel Kenny Meeting Armando’s Family Was ‘So Awkward’

Kenneth finally met Armando’s San Filipe family on 90 Day Fiancé. But was it their engagement or Kenny’s Spanish skills that made the meeting awkward?

Kenneth Niedermeier and Armando Rubio’s engagement was a happy 90 Day Fiancé moment. But the events that followed at Armando’s family home after? Not so much. As Armando introduced Kenny to his large Mexican family, the American man worried about the consequences. But little did he know that this “meet the parents” will be the most uncomfortable moment ever. 90 Day Fiancé fans complained that Kenneth not knowing Spanish was the problem, but most of them thought, the Rubio family meeting could be summed up in one word – awkward.

The 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way couple, who are giving TLC viewers relationship goals since Day 1, got engaged and made everyone happy. Kenny, 57 driving down to San Filipe, Mexico armed with his memories and dog Truffles, didn’t waste any time in proposing to his long-distance love Armando, 31. But while Kenny’s triplet daughters rooted for their father and Armando, his Mexican family was going to take a fair bit of convincing. So, when Armando took off his ring, as they drove down to meet the family, he’d barely come out to days before, Kenny shouldn’t have been taken by surprise. However, Kenny who didn’t know Spanish was called out by those watching because he was the one who had shifted permanently to Mexico. To add to Armando’s problems, he also felt like Kenny was pressurizing him into confessing about the engagement. So, right after Armando’s father outright refused to interact with them, Armando came clean to his mother and the rest of the relatives about his engagement, and 90 Day Fiancé fans could hear the crickets chirping.

Armando’s mother accepted before 90 Day Fiancé cameras that she was surprised at him announcing the engagement before her sisters, and apparently “embarrassing” her. Kenny, too, realized that she was hurt and “took it as something horrible and not something beautiful.” The meeting ended with another deafening pause until Armando’s mom declared that it was “time for bed.” Those watching this on screen felt that the awkwardness in the scene could be sliced through with a knife. And most 90 Day Fiancé viewers are blaming Kenny and his unimpressive Spanish for adding to the silence and uncomfortableness. One Twitter user asked, “Kenny meeting Armando’s family was awkward. You didn’t bother to learn *any* Spanish before moving to Mexico?” and another one commented, “Kenny is really annoying. He’s expecting too much. It’s a cultural thing they are trying. Celebrate the small milestones. The family came together to meet you. It was awkward but they are trying.”

90 Day Fiancé fans also thought that Armando’s timing for sharing the engagement news is what made matters worse. “Only thing more AWKWARD than Kenny meeting Armando’s family? Armando picks NOW as the time to announce the engagement? Someone needs to teach Armando how to read a room,” shared a viewer. Some agree that although the scene was difficult to watch, it was Kenny himself who had earlier guilt-tripped Armando into confessing about the proposal. But for most watching, the heart-wrenching fact that a couple has to go through so many levels of rejection to get accepted is what made the 90 Day Fiancé scene awkward, further.

While Kenneth knowing Spanish would have helped him strike a conversation with Armando’s family, it still wouldn’t change their opinion on same-sex relationships and marriages. To add to their troubles, Armando’s father not wanting to step out of the house from being “tired” could be taken as a sign of him never accepting his son’s 90 Day Fiancé romance. But then again, the culture there is different than what Kenny is used to back home, which could make Armando’s folks take some more time to process the developments. The 90 Day Fiancé pair is still very likely together in Mexico right now, and if that’s any indication, Armando’s family could have come around to accept Kenneth, and his Spanish skills, after all.
