Ah, the 1990s… It was a time of blow-up furniture, boy bands, fanny packs, and incredible films. Yes, several of the movies from this decade, whether they be comedies, action flicks, animated, rom-coms, or horror stories, are considered classics today.

And since it is the day and age of reboots, remakes, and revivals, we thought it would be fun to think back to the ‘90s, deciding which films could and should get remade and which ones can’t and shouldn’t ever be touched. That being said, keep reading to see the ten that made our list, then stay tuned to see what the industry decides to do!

10 Remake It: Groundhog Day

The film Groundhog Day was released in 1993, starring Bill Murray as Phil Connors, a character who gets caught in a time loop. This film seemed to grow in popularity over time, due to its general premise and funny scenes.

After its success, a stage adaptation came in 2016, as did a virtual reality video game sequel that focused on Phil’s son, Phil Connors, Jr., and that came out in 2019. But as far as a remake goes, this could still be possible. This flick is considered a classic, but a whole new generation would be able to enjoy it if it came out again.

9 Don’t Touch It: Pulp Fiction

If something has been called one of the greatest films ever made, then it probably should not ever be touched! That is the case with Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Released in 1994, this crime story starred John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis and Uma Thurman. It meshed comedy and violence together in a wonderful way. It was nominated for and won numerous awards. And it is considered to be Tarantino’s masterpiece.

That being said, it should certainly stay where it is, as a true icon and influence of the ’90s.

8 Remake It: Anastasia

In 1997, Fox Animation Studios put out Anastasia, which featured the voices of notable actors and actresses like Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Angela Lansbury, Christopher Lloyd, Bernadette Peters, Hank Azaria, and Kirsten Dunst. As a historical adaptation and a success, it led to other works, such as a direct-to-video spin-off flick in 1999, as well as a stage musical in 2016.

Many forget that this princess movie is not a Disney one. However, Disney is currently making live-action versions of their most popular films. And since this is the most profitable movie from Fox Animation Studios and producer/director Don Bluth, then it deserves a live-action remake, as well!

7 Don’t Touch It: Titanic

One of the most successful and beloved films of all time, Titanic, came out in 1997. From James Cameron, it featured Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as people from different worlds who ended up aboard a ship and fell in love.

Titanic tied with All About Eve for the movie with the most Oscar nominations (14), and it tied with Ben-Hur for the movie that won the most Oscars (11). It was the highest-grossing movie of all time, until another one of Cameron’s films, Avatar, passed it. So, it can’t be touched either.

6 Remake It: The Little Rascals

From the 1920s to the 1940s, Our Gang was on TV, and in 1994, a family film came out called The Little Rascals; this was an adaptation, which focused on a group of kids, with names like Spanky, Alfalfa, Darla, Stymie, Froggy and Buckwheat.

Many grew up watching this flick, and many surely consider it a classic. However, since it was enjoyed in the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘90s, it should be enjoyed, in a whole new way, in the 2020s, as well.

5 Don’t Touch It: Pretty Woman

In 1990, Pretty Woman, which was directed by Garry Marshall, was released. As the rom-com with the highest number of ticket sales in history, it starred Julia Roberts as a sex worker, Vivian Ward, and Richard Gere as a well-off businessman, Edward Lewis.

A musical version of this movie actually started in 2018, but that was not a remake or a sequel. That being said, let’s hope that continues, as this is a classic story and one of Roberts’ best films.

4 Remake It: Jerry Maguire

On a similar note, Jerry Maguire came out in 1996. This is another romantic comedy, as well as a sports flick. It features stars such as Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Renée Zellweger, and the acting and writing in it led to it being a financial success and winning several awards.

While it may be controversial to even consider remaking it, hear us out: Today, Tom Cruise is mostly known as an action star, due to movies like Mission: Impossible, War of the Worlds and Jack Reacher. So if someone else, a rising rom-com star, could help a new generation fall in love with this story, that could be beautiful.

3 Don’t Touch It: Forrest Gump

90s Films 5 Wed Love To See Get Remade (& 5 Originals That Cant Be Touched)

Forrest Gump is another film that came out in 1994 that is considered a true legend of a film. It featured Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump, who did not think quickly but who ran quickly and loved in such a big way.

In 2001, a screenplay for a sequel was written, but nothing happened. In 2007, the screenplay was looked at again, but still, nothing has happened. An Indian remake is coming in December. Let’s hope that is all!

2 Remake It: The Blair Witch Project

90s Films 5 Wed Love To See Get Remade (& 5 Originals That Cant Be Touched)

The Blair Witch Project, from 1999, was about filmmakers investigating a paranormal legend known as The Blair Witch. This horror flick was marketed and filmed to look like it was made of actual home video footage, which was quite creepy. In 2000, a sequel called Book of Shadows came out, and in 2016, a direct sequel (which ignored the one from the year 2000) was released, titled Blair Witch. Then, in 2017, it was announced that a TV show based on this story was in the works.

Will there be a series? Will there be more sequels? Will there be a remake? We hope so… at least for that last question. This paved the way for similar scary movies, and it would be cool to see how that tale was told in 2020.

1 Don’t Touch It: Mrs. Doubtfire

In 1993, Robin Williams was Mrs. Doubtfire. This movie was hilarious, yet it also touched on important topics like divorce and family bonds. Plus, the makeup was praised and awarded. Bonnie Hunt started making Mrs. Doubtfire 2 in 2001. A rewrite came in 2006. Rumors popped up again in 2010. In 2014, it seemed it was really going to happen, but then, Williams passed away in August of that year. Still, a musical version was announced in 2015, and though it still hasn’t happened, the team said it was still coming, when asked about it in 2018.

Williams himself said it best in 2006: If it was not going to be done correctly, then it shouldn’t be done at all, and there would not and cannot be a sequel without him.
