The Riverdale fandom is one of the most indulgent and patient fandoms ever. Fans of the teen thriller have made their peace with the most outlandish storylines and some major timeline discrepancies, and have not let it get in the way of their unquestioning love for Cole Sprouse. Now, that’s real stan love.
But there are some glaring plot holes in the show which even the most forgiving fans have taken note of, especially since it jumbles up the narrative quite a bit. Here are all the most noticeable plot holes that Riverdale fans could not ignore.
10 The Twins’ Age Discrepancy
The Blossom twins aren’t in the same grade, which is weird. In the pilot episode Betty, Veronica and Archie talk about how they are all about to be sophomores at Riverdale High and Cheryl is in their grade. Meanwhile, Jason is in the same grade as Polly, Betty’s older sister, which would imply that Cheryl and Jason are older than Archie, Betty and Veronica.
Does that mean Cheryl was held back, or that Jason skipped a few grades? If so, why was this never acknowledged? Plus, Cheryl is a cheer captain in the first season, which is unusual for sophomores.
9 Archie & Betty Are Not Next Door Neighbors
If Betty can see Archie from her window, it would mean that they are next-door neighbors. But when fans look at screenshots of their homes, it shows that the house on the left of Betty’s home is not Archie’s house and there is no house on the right side of Betty’s home.
So, how can they see each other that well from each other’s window? If their houses were located on other sides of the street, they wouldn’t be able to see each other this clearly.
8 How Did Penelope Recover So Fast?
In season 2, Penelope suffers third-degree burns and acute smoke inhalation during the fire. The next episode shows Penelope covered in bandages, especially on her face and head, which were more severely affected.
But just a couple of episodes later, she is back to her normal self, and this was too big of a goof-up for fans, especially since burns that acute can take months to heal. Even Nathalie Boltt, who plays Penelope, talked about how unconvincing her super quick recovery was.
7 How Can The Black Hood Have A Ringtone On Betty’s Phone?
If the Black Hood calls Betty from a blocked or an unknown number, it is impossible for them to have a customized ringtone on her phone. Throughout the show, every time the Black Hood calls Betty, the song Lollipop by The Chordettes plays upon her phone.
But the screen clearly shows that the number is blocked, so assigning them a ringtone is impossible. It would make more sense if Betty had saved the number, or if the phone screen wasn’t made visible at all.
6 How Can Riverdale Have So Many Gangs?
Riverdale is a really small town, where everyone knows everyone, so it’s impossible for a town of this size to have so many highly functioning gangs. To be fair, gangs and turf wars are not uncommon in small towns, especially as most gangs maintain their stronghold by controlling the sale of illegal substances.
Fans were okay with the Southside Serpents, which is a gang everyone knew about, but then came The Ghoulies, the Pretty Poisons, and The Gargoyle Gang, and considering Riverdale doesn’t even have that many inhabitants, to begin with, the existence of so many gangs or crime rings just does not make sense.
5 Josie Ditching High School
Josie, who’s a junior, decides that she will drop out of school to tour with her musician father. But there is no way her mum Sierra, who’s a lawyer and also the mayor of Riverdale, would be okay with this, especially since she is a great mum who’s always looking out for her daughter.
Josie, of course, goes to New York and eventually becomes a part of the Katy Keene spin-off, and Sierra even visits Josie there as the latter prepares to launch her EP. But fans never made peace with the fact that Sierra let her daughter be a high school dropout.
4 Jughead Being Serpent King
One of the goofiest plot holes in the show is Jughead’s rise to power as the Serpent King. As cool and capable as Jughead is, he is still a teenager and the Southside Serpents are a gang of tough, hardcore criminals who dominate the southern part of town.
Sure, Jughead’s father is the former leader, but nepotism is not really how crime gangs usually work, especially when the next leader in question is a teen who never wanted to be in the gang in the first place.
3 Cheryl Joining The Serpents
It doesn’t seem right that Cheryl, who’s a Northsider and a teenager, gets to join The Serpents, just because she gives the gang a heads-up about Hiram’s raid of the Whyte Wyrm. Not only does Cheryl get to join the gang, but she also gets her own red jacket.
This is really inconsistent to The Serpents’ earlier behavior, especially since they had so many opinions about Betty joining the gang. Plus, Cheryl’s dad had framed former The Serpents leader FP for murder, so this just doesn’t make sense.
2 Hal’s Eyes
The Black Hood’s eye color goof-up is easily the most glaring errors on the show. Black Hood was the serial killer who killed Fred and attacked several other people on Riverdale. The Black Hood wears a black hood-like cloth over his face when he commits his crimes and the only thing visible are his green eyes.
So, fans were confused when Hal Cooper turns out to be Black Hood, especially since he has blue eyes. Does this mean Black Hood used contacts or was this just an inconsistency that fans should ignore?
1 How Is FP 50 Years Old?
If FP is 50 years old, the entire timeline of the show does not add up. In season three, FP celebrates his 50th birthday, but all the parents, be it Alice or Fred belong to the same age group. This means that in the early 90s, when they were in high school, they were 16 or 17, and in present-day, they would be in their mid-40s.
If FP is 50, that would mean he was 25 when he knocked up a 16-year-old Alice, and that simply doesn’t add up.
