Star Wars Creates Its Perfect New Droid Meme

Star Wars has created a perfect new droid meme in an episode of Star Wars: Visions. Although the Star Wars saga is an epic space opera, the franchise has no shortage of humor. While unintentional, for the most part, the franchise, especially the prequel films and the canon continuity’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series have inspired fans to create numerous memes that reference their most memorable lines and scenes. Some of these memes are notorious enough to be referenced in official Star Wars material. Obi-Wan’s use of the high ground during his duel with Darth Vader on Mustafar was directly referenced in an issue of Marvel’s Darth Vader comics, and Anakin’s infamous dislike of sand is shared by Sabine Wren in Star Wars Rebels. A notable scene in Visions looks to be prime meme material.

In the Visions episode “The Ninth Jedi,” the Force-sensitive girl Kara is tasked with delivering a package of lightsabers to a group of Jedi in Hy Izlan’s Aerial Temple. Pursued by Sith-aligned assailants, Kara utilizes her Force potential and one of the lightsabers to protect herself, eventually reaching an old droid shuttle pilot who ferries her to the Aerial Jedi Temple, helping her complete her mission.

The old droid pilot is on break when Kara arrives, pouring himself a hot cup of what appears to be tea, but is most likely heated fuel or oil for maintenance. His introduction lingers on him methodically filling his cup with the tea-like substance and slowly sipping the liquid, enjoying his break in a remarkably human-like manner. The detailed frames of the droid drinking tea are all too reminiscent of other tea-related internet memes, including another from the Star Wars franchise.

The word “tea” being synonymous with gossip became a popular internet meme, thanks to an image of Kermit the Frog from a Lipton commercial. The meme typically involves sarcastic or insulting statements followed by “but that’s none of my business.” A popular variation of the meme was made, based on The Mandalorian, replacing Kermit with Grogu (“Baby Yoda”) holding a cup of soup.

The old droid enjoying his drink in Visions could easily be the next iteration of this popular meme, joining the ranks of other popular droid-related memes, like the B1 Battle Droid in The Clone Wars remarking “I guess I’m in charge now” after General Grievous fled his flagship, leaving the droid in command. Visions is still relatively new, but given time, the old droid and his beverage may soon be the Star Wars franchise’s newest meme.

One of the more novel aspects of the Star Wars franchise is the way that it humanizes droids. While there are some instances of mindless automatons, most droids are essentially sapient beings who are simply made of mechanical parts. Star Wars: Visions cleverly used this to create a notably funny visual gag that is perfect fodder for the next Star Wars meme.
