Tom Hanks plays Fred Rogers in the trailer for the upcoming drama, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. In the 51 years since Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood made its debut in 1968, multiple generations have grown up watching the series and learning lessons about compassion, empathy, and basic human decency from its eponymous host. Now, following the release of last year’s celebrated documentary about the man and his legacy, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Rogers is getting an official Hollywood biopic.

Titled A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, the film tells the true story of how journalist Tom Junod – who’s renamed Lloyd Vogel and played by Matthew Rhys (The Americans) in the movie – went from being begrudgingly assigned to write a profile about Fred to forming a lifelong friendship with him. It’s the latest offering from acclaimed filmmaker Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and is already regarded as a potential awards contender. Today, Sony pulled the curtain back on the movie by releasing its first trailer.

The trailer for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is now online and is expected to begin screening with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in theaters this weekend. You can check it out in the space below.

Judging by the trailer, both Hanks and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood at large will be very faithful in the way that they both emulate the real Rogers’ mannerisms and recreate scenes from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. At the same time, the trailer does a nice job of setting up the film’s story, which (by the look of things) is as much about Vogel and the lessons he learned about being a man and soon-to-be father from Fred as it is Mister Rogers himself. Overall, it seems that Heller and her writers, Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster (Transparent), are trying to make something more insightful than a paint-by-numbers biopic, and that’s encouraging to see.

With a cast that additionally includes Oscar-winner Chris Cooper and Susan Kelechi Watson (This Is Us) in key supporting roles, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is loaded with talent across the board and sounds all the better on paper for it. Heller’s humanistic storytelling similarly makes her an excellent choice to bring Fred Rogers’ life to the big screen, and the trailer suggests that the resulting film has a good shot of living up to the expectations surrounding it. All Oscar discussion aside, this is definitely one to check out when it arrives over this year’s Thanksgiving frame.
