A BvS Prequel Comic Already Introduced Firefly To The DCEU Before Batgirl

Firefly is set to appear as the villain of the upcoming HBO Max DC movie Batgirl, but the villain actually made his DCEU debut earlier in a prequel comic to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Brendan Fraser will reportedly play Firefly in Batgirl, which marks his second DC comics role following his portrayal of Cliff Steele, aka Robotman, on the streaming series Doom Patrol. In joining Batgirl, Fraser is continuing a major — and well-deserved — mainstream comeback, while Firefly’s appearance is one that’s already had some prior set up.

The prequel comic showed Firefly attempting to destroy a building and being apprehended by Batman some time during the Dark Knight’s past prior to the film’s story. As established in the movie itself, Batman has been in operation for twenty years by this point, so it makes sense he’d have crossed paths with many members of his famed rogue’s gallery, the Joker being the most significant example. What makes Firefly’s upcoming appearance in Batgirl interesting is that it’s not the only link to the continually dissected Batman v Superman the movie seems to be establishing either.

What is nonetheless very interesting is what Firefly’s appearance in Batgirl could mean for the film’s relationship with Batman v Superman. While Batgirl will introduce Firefly cinematically, the Batman v Superman prequel comic that might now be drawn upon just a few years after Warner Bros. tried to divert from Snyder’s DC movies in the haphazard Justice League reshoots. Even Firefly simply commenting about “the time Batman caught me” would indicate that Batman v Superman’s prequel comic, and by extension the film itself, are being built upon in Batgirl.

In addition to Firefly, a Batgirl movie including Commissioner James Gordon goes without saying, with Gordon being the well-known father of Batgirl’s civilian identity Barbara Gordon, who will be portrayed by Leslie Grace. However, the specific casting choice of J.K. Simmons to return as Gordon after his appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League has grabbed a great deal of attention. What’s more, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have stated that Batman will also make an appearance in the movie, too. With no fewer than three current big-screen Batmen in Robert Pattinson, Michael Keaton, and Ben Affleck, all eyes are now on which one it will be.

With Matt Reeves’ The Batman existing in its own singular continuity separate from other DC movies, that very likely rules the Caped Crusader portrayed by Pattinson out. With Affleck to portray his version of Batman alongside Keaton’s in The Flash by way of the film’s Multiverse-exploring story, that’s led to considerable speculation about whether Affleck might also appear in Batgirl. Needless to say, the Commissioner Gordon associated with Affleck’s Batman has only strengthened that theorizing, along with Affleck’s own purportedly pleasant experience on The Flash. Still, it must be stressed that, especially with the infamous back-and-forth rumors in Affleck’s initial Batman departure, nothing can be said for certain right now about whether he’ll reprise the role any further than The Flash.

Granted, there’s still much to Batgirl’s story that has yet to be revealed. However, Batgirl is gradually offering small, detailed nuggets to indicate it might be tying itself to Batman v Superman with Simmons’ Commissioner Gordon to appear and now Firefly to be the villain after his DCEU debut in the movie’s prequel comic.
