A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

The Star Wars universe is one of the most widespread and sprawling franchises in the world. With countless movies, television shows, video games, comic books, novels, and more all tying into one galaxy far, far away, it’s impossible not to get a little lost. However, the Star Wars movies and television shows all fit into one basic timeline, making it relatively easy for a fan to figure out what chronological order the universe should go in.

Of course, some shows don’t exactly fit into the canon or don’t have dates featured in them. Some upcoming shows on Disney+ similarly have not yet revealed when they take place. For the time being, this is the definitive and complete chronological timeline of the Star Wars universe as far as movies and television shows are concerned.

A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

With this battle as the epoch for the universe’s timeline, every other movie or show either took place in BBY — Before the Battle of Yavin — or in ABY — After the Battle of Yavin. Because Anakin Skywalker was canonically born in 41 BBY, this makes him 19 years old in Attack of the Clones.

This is actually the same age that his children, Luke and Leia, are at the beginning of A New Hope. Attack of the Clones finds Anakin a bit further along in this story as he becomes a stronger Jedi. However, while Anakin is important to this story, the clones ended up being so important that they needed to be explored in further depth.

Dee Bradley Baker will be returning to play pretty much every character, as usual. 22 Star Wars: Droids (15 BBY)

A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

One of the very first television shows made in the Star Wars universe was Star Wars: Droids, also known as Star Wars: Droids — The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO, having aired in 1985. Droids was a spin-off of the original trilogy in the Star Wars universe, although it was intended to take place before the events of A New Hope.

Canonically, Star Wars: Droids takes place in 15 BBY, specifically four years after Revenge of the Sith and 15 years before A New Hope. While the droids were seen going into Wedge Antilles’ hands by Bail Organa during Revenge of the Sith, the show makes it clear that R2-D2 and C-3PO were separated from Wedge on accident.

A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

While Luke and Leia were only nine years old in 10 BBY, Han Solo is actually a little bit older. A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

Also similar to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor has not yet aired, so larger details about what it will be about have not yet been released. A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

Not only that, Star Wars Rebels was specifically meant to take place in the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. 17 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (0 BBY)

A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

For years, fans wondered about the Rebel spies mentioned in the opening crawl for A New Hope. In that crawl, the text reads: “It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.” This could also serve as the synopsis for the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Rogue One takes place in 0 BBY, mere days right before A New Hope begins. However, it also features a flashback to the year 13 BBY. The characters in Rogue One — including Cassian Andor and the newly-introduced Jyn Erso — form the Rebel group that steals the plans for the Death Star from the Galactic Empire. They ensure the plans will get to Princess Leia in time for her to have them in A New Hope.

16 Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (0 BBY/0 ABY)

A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

The first movie in the Star Wars timeline by release date is also the epoch for the in-universe timeline. The events of Episode IV — A New Hope form the basis for the year structure and calendar eras as they exist in Star Wars’ actual canonical universe. It is here that Luke and Leia finally return to the story, now nineteen years old and having lived very separate & distinct lives since their last (and first) appearance at the time of their birth.

The fight between the Rebels on Yavin 4 and the Empire & their Death Star would later be called the Battle of Yavin, serving as the epoch for the year structure in the films. Everything before A New Hope was BBY — Before the Battle of Yavin — and everything after is ABY — After the Battle of Yavin.

15 The Star Wars Holiday Special (1 ABY)

A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

While nobody really enjoys the Star Wars Holiday Special, it does take place in 1 ABY. Despite the fact that the Holiday Special is truly terrible, it was still the first big Star Wars story released after A New Hope and introduced the character of Boba Fett for the very first time.

Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, and James Earl Jones all appear in the special, which mainly takes place on Kashyyyk. This movie may be bad, but the Holiday Special still fits right into the canon and technically serves as the only cinematic transition between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

14 Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (3 ABY)

A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

Widely considered to be the best movie in the Star Wars universe, Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back takes place only a couple of years after the events of A New Hope. Empire canonically takes place in the year 3 ABY, establishing the new year structure After the Battle of Yavin. This movie also sees characters like Luke, Leia, and Han further along in their journeys & character arcs.

TESB film also reintroduces characters like Lando Calrissian, who would have seen his first chronological appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Many characters who existed before are coming back together, while characters who have been around for some time in-universe (like Obi-Wan Kenobi), are now being mourned.

13 Caravan Of Courage: An Ewok Adventure, Or The Ewok Adventure (3 ABY)

A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

While Return of the Jedi was not renowned for its Ewok subplots, George Lucas decided to double down and introduce even more Ewok stories to the universe. One of those stories was the spin-off movie Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure, also known simply as The Ewok Adventure.

Caravan of Courage showcases the forest moon of Endor, and introduces characters like Wicket the Ewok to the universe. This movie takes place between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, theoretically to set up the Ewoks in the latter film.

12 Ewoks: The Battle For Endor (3 ABY)

A Complete Chronological Timeline Of The Star Wars Universe Including Movies & TV Shows

Only a year after Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure came out in 1984 (and two years after Return of the Jedi released in 1983), a sequel to The Ewok Adventure was released. This movie, entitled Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, kept Wicket as the center-stage Ewok and continued giving audiences a story no one really asked for. The Battle for Endor takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, immediately after the events of The Ewok Adventure. As a result, this film is also set in the year 3 ABY.

11 Star Wars: Ewoks (3.5 ABY)

Along with the show Droids came a sister series: Ewoks. The two shows used to air together as The Ewoks and Droids Adventure Hour before Star Wars: Ewoks set off all on its own as The All-New Ewoks. George Lucas apparently insisted on trying to make the Ewoks work.

Lucas brought back the characters he introduced in Return of the Jedi and the movies The Ewok Adventure & Ewoks: The Battle for Endor for a show that takes place before the events of Return of the Jedi. Technically, this show takes place halfway through the year 3 ABY — setting it in 3.5 ABY. Watching the Star Wars universe chronologically gives viewers a whole lot of Ewok content to get through before they can even watch Return of the Jedi.
