WARNING: The following contains potential spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in theaters May 6.

There has been an alleged picture of Deadpool leaked from the set of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With the seemingly inevitable introduction of the X-Men looming, this suggests that the Avengers Disassembled event by Brian Bendis, David Finch, Danny Miki, Frank D’Armata, and Albert Deschesne, and House of M storylines by Brian Bendis and Oliver Copiel are finally coming to the forefront of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the Avengers Disassembled, an errant remark by a colleague sends Wanda unraveling. Eventually, her breakdown creates a dire situation. The Avengers lose their UN recognition, Tony Stark falls off the wagon despite never taking a drink, and several Avengers, including Vision and Hawkeye, lay dead.

In House of M storylines, things only grow worse. First, Scarlet Witch’s powers remake the entire Marvel Universe into what at first seems a utopian society. However, scratching the surface quickly reveals it is no perfect society but one where mutants have taken on the role of oppressors. When that reality begins to break down, Wanda sees Hawkeye killed again and her brother Quicksilver brutally murdered by their father Magneto. It “wakes” her up, forcing her to confront what she has created and how she was manipulated into doing so.

Disgusted with herself, her father, and still traumatized over her role in Disassembled, Wanda utters a single phrase, “No more mutants. The second those words leave her mouth, they cause total devastation to the Mutant population, leaving homo superior nearly extinct in one shocking moment. Both these incidents came from a similar place of hurt that fans watched play out on WandaVision as the Scarlet Witch wrestled with grief from losing first Vision and then her sons, Billy and Tommy.

The possible parallels don’t stop there either. In the comics, Doctor Strange is Wanda’s attending physician during the birth of her twins. In the MCU he may not have been there for their birth, but he seems to be the first Avenger to reach out to her after the events of Westview. Additionally, in the comics, Strange chooses to put Wanda in a magical medical coma until they can figure out how best to help her and protect themselves.

After she gives birth in House of M, Charles Xavier’s voice communicates with her to plead that she return the world to normal. In the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans can also hear the dulcet tones of Patrick Stewart, the Fox X-Franchise’s longest-serving Professor Xavier. Other intriguing similarities in House of M include Captain America traveling back in time to be with Peggy Carter and thus was quite old in the present. It is also the first storyline ever that made Carol Danvers “Captain Marvel” instead of “Ms. Marvel.”

The Deadpool films suggest a possible post-House of M world given the spareness of mutants and that neither the audience nor Deadpool ever see Charles Xavier. The latter is especially pertinent because Professor X is missing throughout House of M after Wanda unleashes the new reality.

However, the biggest indication of integration comes from Loki with the show’s introduction of the Time Variance Authority and his variant, Sylvie. In the Multiverse of Madness trailer, there’s a suspicious yellow and gold light behind Wanda that looks like a timedoor. That blink and you’ll miss it detail could give credence to the Wanda we know in the Marvel Cinematic Universe being a variant.

Analyzing the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Wanda we know and love is most likely a variant of the House of M Wanda. This allows the MCU going forward to establish her — a version of her anyway — as Magneto’s daughter. Given that this version also effectively destroyed mutantkind by death and depowerment, it would help explain away any and all details from the Fox films that Marvel Studios wishes to ditch or change. By integrating the Avengers Disassembled and House of M storylines, the Marvel Cinematic Universe creates a path to introduce mutants with a ready-made explanation for where they’ve been.

Using these two controversial but undeniably important stories for inspiration also suggests a shift in tone in the MCU’s next phase. The film universe seems on the precipice of a darker direction as the Multiverse implodes with storylines that involve grief, destruction, and horror. How can one make so many inferences from a film set’s leaked photos? Because Marvel has given clues to fans the whole time. The leaked pictures are just a bonus.
