A Forgotten Bleach Comic Revealed a Villains Fate A Decade Early

With Bleach’s recent anniversary comic stoking speculation about new chapters and a new story arc for the influential manga franchise, fan discussions have revolved around the subject of this new story arc, Hell. While Bleach’s Hell has been a known component of the world for some time, there’s very little canonical information on it compared to other realms, but there’s a valuable source of information that’s been overlooked.

The fourth Bleach feature film, Bleach: Hell Verse, was released in Japan in 2010. While not considered canonical to other media, like most anime and manga films, Tite Kubo had a greater degree of involvement with this film, overseeing the production and development of the script in order to ensure that the rules and portrayal of how Hell worked would be consistent with any manga content that might come later. A promotional movie one-shot chapter was released in conjunction with the film, as is typical for theatrical releases of anime films. Due to his extensive involvement, this one was written by Kubo himself.

“Imaginary Number 01: The Unforgivens” is the title of this promotional chapter, referencing the mathematical concept of imaginary numbers. The chapter depicts the Espada characters Szayelaporro Granz and Aaroniero Arruruerie arriving in Hell after their defeat in the Hueco Mundo arc, falling into its depths. Despite ostensibly being on the same side, the two Arrancar immediately prepare to fight with each other before being interrupted by one of the villains from the Hell Verse film, Shuren. He antagonizes them into a fight by telling them that escape is impossible, but judges their abilities useless to him. He and his team wipe them out before Shuren’s attention turns back to Ichigo, contemplating somehow luring him into Hell.

While these promo chapters are often noncanonical or at least of dubious canonicity, “The Unforgivens” is in a unique place. While it does include characters from the film who may not be canonical to the manga, nothing that happens in the chapter really contradicts the main canon, and “canon” is often determined by whether it was written by the series creator–which this was. Szayelaporro emerges from Hell in the anniversary story, so that much matches up. Szayelaporro also looks very different after he emerges from Hell than he did before, and in the film, “dying” in Hell and regaining physical form is the key behind this transformation, one which makes it impossible to escape. The portal through which he emerges in the anniversary story also matches up with the portals used in the film, as distinct from the proper Gates of Hell more commonly seen in the series. On top of all this, neither Espada features in the film, so there’s no real reason to include them in the promo chapter.

The chapter’s designation as an imaginary number may actually provide some important context here: in math, imaginary numbers exist conceptually, but not physically, and are derived from negative numbers. While these exact events in Hell may or may not have played out in the primary continuity, conceptually everything presented here makes sense and is canonically valid. This promo chapter that largely fell between the cracks may have found new purpose as a prequel to this new anniversary story, offering a bit of insight into what the villains of Bleach have undergone during their time in Hell.
