What started out as a nice birthday gift has turned into a new internet sensation after one Twitch streamer posted an image of his girlfriend clutching a giant plushie of the Pokemon Mareep. Pokemon merchandise based around Nintendo’s beloved monster-collecting RPG series is nothing new at this point, but this particular doll is especially head-turning due to both its sheer size and hefty $500 price tag.

The stuffed sheep would take on a life of its own when Twitch user Skooch decided to present his girlfriend Serinide with the jumbo-sized Mareep doll at the end of an arcade-themed birthday party he had planned for her. It seemed like a cute enough gift at the time, given that she was apparently a huge Pokémon fan and was coincidentally the same height as the toy, but it appears that Serinide’s birthday was only the start of the fun involving her and a certain electric-powered sheep, much to her boyfriend’s playful dismay.

As reported by Polygon yesterday, Serinide now sleeps with her adorable Mareep plushie every night, as indicated by a picture Skooch later posted on his Twitter page of her clutching her doll as he lay beside her in bed, starting up at the ceiling and resigning himself to the harsh reality that he has been upstaged by a toy – one that he himself purchased, no less. This image would spread like wildfire across social media in the days since it was first put out, even inspiring a number of fanart drawings with characters from such games as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Persona 5, and, fittingly enough, Pokémon. Check out some of these works, as well as Skooch’s original image, below:

These Pokémon-related hijinks come at a time of great success for the popular monster-raising franchise, as The Pokémon Company has just announced that 2020 has been their second most profitable year in history. This has been bolstered by the continued success of such titles as the Nintendo Switch’s Pokémon: Sword and Shield and the mobile-based Pokémon Go, as well as goodwill acts of charity like TPC’s recent donation to groups like Black Lives Matter and the NAACP in their efforts to promote racial equality. It hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows, however, as parent company Nintendo recently had to deal with a poorly-made Pokémon knock-off game looking to bank on the series’ success.

Still, it’s easy to see why Skooch’s Mareep-centric tweet has caught on so well across the internet. The scenario it presents is tremendously comical and, given the sheer amount of fanart it has since spawned, very applicable to a number of popular gaming franchises. Poor Skooch may be stuck having to share the love of his life with one very huggable stuffed sheep from now on, but at least Pokémon fans around the world can get a good laugh out of it in these trying times.
