Three years after her near-fatal overdose, Demi Lovato is opening up about the moments leading up to her crisis and the recovery she undertook afterwards. The third episode of Demi’s new docuseries, Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil, premiered on YouTube on Tuesday, March 30. Throughout the episodes thus far, Demi has been vulnerable and honest about her relapse. Many of Demi’s close friends and family have been sharing their perspectives on the incident throughout the episodes as well.

Prior to her overdose, Demi was touring the world on her “Tell Me You Love Me World Tour.” With a few days off from touring, Demi went out with friends. Her former choreographer and good friend Dani Vitale was celebrating her 28th birthday. After a night out, the group went back to Demi’s house to hang out. When the night grew late, Demi begged her friends to stay the night. However, they all parted ways. Not long after they left, Demi called her dealer, who brought her an assortment of drugs.

Demi had already relapsed prior to her overdose without informing those close to her of the severity of it. Just two days prior, Demi performed what would be her last show on tour. The show took place in Paso Robles, California at the 2018 California Mid-State Fair. At the time, an eyewitness told ET that Demi was in good spirits during the show. They said Demi seemed to be in a “great mood” and “was her normal enthusiastic Demi-self.” They went on to explain that, throughout Demi’s performance, there were no indications she was under the influence. From videos found on YouTube taken at the show, Demi looked to be full of energy while performing. She wore an all-black outfit, letting her long locks fall over her shoulders.

While performing her new song at the time, “Sober,” Demi forgot the words of the first verse. The lyrics of the song discussed Demi’s relapse at the time. However, no one on her team seemed to take the quite obvious call for help into consideration. Many assumed her forgetfulness came from the emotion behind the song, as well as the fact it was newly added to her set. Demi seemingly laughed off her mistake. Iggy Azalea, who was an opening act on Demi’s tour, praised the singer for being honest with her new song. She admitted to having knowledge of Demi’s relapse. Demi’s tour was set to resume in Atlantic City, New Jersey just two days after her overdose.

From what Demi has revealed thus far in her docuseries, she is quite lucky to still be alive. Since her overdose, Demi has switched her management teams. She is now signed by Scooter Braun, who also managed artists such as Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber. Demi revealed her new team is more focused on her well-being than any team she has ever been part of.
