A NASA Probe Touched The Sun And This Is What It Saw

NASA recently made history by having the first-ever spacecraft ‘touch’ the Sun, and a video from the probe reveals the amazing sights it took in throughout the journey. So often when talking about space missions/discoveries, the conversation tends to focus on other planets in the Solar System. There’s a deep fascination with the possibility of life on Mars, Jupiter’s unfathomably large storms, and the hulking rings that surround Saturn.

Here’s the thing — none of these planets would exist without the Sun. The Sun sits at the center of our Solar System and uses its enormous gravitational force to make all the planets orbit it. Whether it be Mercury, Neptune, or any of the worlds in between, they all move according to the Sun’s power. And in the case of a planet like Earth, the Sun is one of the primary reasons why life can exist here.

In an attempt to conduct further research around the Sun, NASA launched its Parker Solar Probe in 2018 with a clear mission: to fly away from Earth, pass through the Sun’s outer atmosphere, and somehow survive while doing so. NASA confirmed the mission’s success on December 14, and alongside that update, it also shared a jaw-dropping video recorded by the Parker Solar Probe. The clip below was recorded by the probe’s WISPR camera and shows four days of travel through the Sun’s corona. Parker shows an incredible view of the Milky Way galaxy around the three-second mark, along with distant shots of planets in the Solar System. The probe also got an unprecedented glimpse of the Sun’s ‘coronal streamers.’ As explained by JHU, “These structures can be seen as bright features moving upward and downward in this video.”

Why NASA Sent A Probe To The Sun

The video is undeniably impressive, but what exactly is the point of flying a probe through the Sun’s outer atmosphere? Along with being an amazing technological achievement, NASA’s also described it as a “monumental moment for solar science.” Missions like this will help scientists better understand the Sun’s evolution, impact on the Solar System, and more. It could also lead to deeper research on other stars beyond the Sun — thus expanding our general understanding of the universe we all live in.

And on a much lower level, there’s the fact that videos like this are simply incredible to look at. They have their scientific importance, yes, but they also help expose more people to the wonders of outer space. Whether that sparks someone’s interest in the science field or just reveals something they didn’t previously know, those moments are every bit as important.
